Process for the crimping of metal caps around the outer faces of insulators, and insulator with crimped cap obtained using this process. Methods are known for crimping a pre-prepared one-piece metal cap on an insulator, in order to secure the cap without the use of seals. To this end, the cap is engaged on the generally frustoconical end of the insulator and radial pressure is exerted on the edge of the cap which deforms it by tightening it all around the end of the insulator.
In known methods, the crimping of the caps is carried out by a large number of radially placed pistons, which requires the use of excessively complicated and expensive tools. Moreover, devices of this kind only allow the crimping of caps on insulator heads of simple and regular shape. The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks.
It relates to a process for the ser weaving of metal caps on insulators, in which the pressure for the crimping wise is transmitted to the cap by a deformable mass, arranged in a matrix around the cap. According to the invention, this deformable mass is constituted by an annular body made of plastic and elastic and this body is deformed and clamped around the ca lotte by a punch which compresses it in the axial direction of the insulator.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, a device for carrying out this process shown in vertical section. The left half of the drawing shows it in the end of operation position, while the right half represents it before the operation begins.
The crimping device shown essentially consists of a die 1 placed on a hollow cylinder 2 forming a base. Inside the matrix and the base is placed an insulator-support 3, its upper part carrying the cap being located in the matrix. The cap 4, prepared in advance and freely engaged on the frustoconical head of the insulator, is surrounded by a washer 5 made of plastic and elastic material, preferably rubber-based.
Inside the base of the die, the isolator 3 rests by one of its bases on a piston 6.
Above the washer 5 and in the axis of the latter is provided a cylindrical punch 7, the section of which corresponds approximately to that of the washer 5 in the uncompressed state. This punch is fitted into a support 8 inside which is placed an upper piston 9 with the interposition of a spiral spring 10 tending to push the upper piston downwards.
I With this device, the crimping of the cap on the insulator takes place as follows: The cap 4 being placed on the insulator placed as it has just been described and as indicated in the drawing, we lower the punch holder 8, so that its piston 9 comes to rest against the upper face of the casing and thus tightens the latter and the insulator elastically against the lower piston 6.
As a result, the insulator and cap are kept immobile in the working position. When the punch port is lowered further, it compresses the spring 10, which reinforces the axial clamping and at the same time the cylindrical punch 7 comes into contact with the elastic washer 5 which it gradually compresses so that its height decreases, while its width increases.
This increase in the width of the section of the washer exerts a uniform pressure over the entire edge of the cap 4, so that the latter deforms regularly and is crimped on the part of the insulator which it surrounds.
Fixing the lower cap 11 on the foot of the insulator takes place in a similar fashion. It is also possible to provide, between the cap and the insulator, an elastic material, for example cardboard or Klingerite, to prevent the porcelain from flaking during the serweaving due to poor dressing of the surfaces. of the cap. This material also serves as a seal preventing the penetration of water between the cap and the insulator.
To prevent the cap from rotating on the insulator, its truncated conical head could be given a polygonal shape or even provided with plane facets or grooves.
