Referring to fig. 1 of the drawing, it can be seen that the illustrated example comprises as a basis a variable speed transmission of the planetary type. The drive shaft 1, connected directly or indirectly to the motor or motive power generator (not shown), carries inside the casing 2 a spider 3 on which several axes 4 are mounted parallel to the main shaft 4 (preferably no more than three), and each of said axles carries a group of toothed wheels 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 locked together but free to turn on the axle which carries them.
In the extension of the drive shaft 1 and journaling in a bearing arranged in the center of the spider 3 is a shaft 10 carrying at one of its ends a central pinion 11 which is in constant mesh with the planetary wheels 5 , while its other end is grooved and mated, by means. which will be described below, to the driven shaft 12.
Mounted concentrically on shaft 10 and on top of each other so as to be able to rotate independently of each other are four hollow shafts 13, 14, 15 and 16 each having a toothed central pinion in mesh with the pinions satellites 6, 7, 8 and 9 respectively. The hollow shafts 13 and 14 are provided with dog clutch crowns 13 'and 14' respectively, with one or the other of which can engage the dog clutch counterpart 17, which can grout ser but not turn, to immobilize the corresponding central pinion.
The hollow shafts 15 and 16 carry brake drums 18 and 19 fitted with band brakes as shown in FIG. 12 by means of which either of these drums can be immobilized. Furthermore, the central shaft 10 and the inner hollow shaft closest to the center are provided with mating dog clutch members 20 and 21 by means of which the adjacent central gear can be immobilized to obtain a direct drive through. the gear (as shown in fig. 1).
The central gears and planetary gears used in the transmission have dimensions such with respect to each other that by immobilizing the hollow shaft 13, a forward control is obtained. reduced speed, hereinafter called third speed, in shafts 11 and 1.2. By releasing the hollow shaft 13 and immobilizing the next 14, a somewhat slower control is obtained, hereinafter called second speed, in the shafts 10 and 12. By releasing the shaft 14 and immobilizing the shaft 15, the first speed is obtained, at the end by releasing the shaft 15 and by blocking in appearance two of the central gears by the clutch 20, 21, a direct or high speed transmission is obtained in the driven members 10 and 12.
For reverse gear, the central pinion 16 is immobilized by the application of the brake on the friction drum, whereupon the wheel 11 starts to turn backwards. The general arrangement of planetary transmission and its operation are so well known that it is not considered necessary to give a more detailed description of its construction and mode of action, except to the extent that they are directly affected by the present invention which will now be described.
In the gearbox, a suitable means is provided for transforming the speed of the motor or of the drive shaft 1 into a force which will be used to govern the automatic gear change system. In the exemplary embodiment envisaged, this means takes the form of a hydraulic pump 22 actuated by the motor shaft and delivering under pressure oil drawn from the bottom of the gearbox into a pipe 23 (fig. 2). ), from which it can escape through a decompression valve 24 (fig. 2),
capable of being charged to any suitable degree depending on operating conditions. This oil is also delivered through a pipe 25 to a chamber 26 (fig. 3), containing a rotary disc valve 27 which, depending on its position, sends the oil to one or the other of two opposed cylinders. 28, 29 containing a double-acting plunger 30.
When the transmission is arranged to be controlled by the automatic mechanism, the pressurized oil is forced back into cylinder 28, while the other cylinder is left free to discharge the oil that it would contain through an orifice controlled by a spring loaded mushroom valve 31, which is for the moment kept away from its seat by a lever 32, but is nevertheless free to close again on this seat in the event that the plunger 30 should suddenly enter the cylinder 29.
In order to transform the torque present in the driven shaft into force, there is interposed between the shafts 10 and 12 an appropriate coupling mechanism capable of giving rise to a thrust which will be the measure of this torque. In the example considered, this mechanism takes the form of a screw and nut device arranged to give rise to a thrust in the direction of the axis of the shafts. As seen in Figs. 1 and 4, the shaft of the shaft 10 carries splines 33 and a screw thread member 34 capable of sliding freely on these splines in the axial direction. This member 34 provided externally with screw threads is engaged in an additional nut 35 secured to the driven shaft 12.
An outer groove collar 36 (fig. 1 and 2) surrounding the nut 35 is connected to the inner screw by means of studs 37 which can move in slots 38 made in the nut 35. It can thus be seen that when the control is transmitted forward from the shaft 10 to the shaft 12, the sliding screw 34 is moved away from the shaft 12 by a force proportional to the torque transmitted.
Straddling the torque sensing device which has just been described is a shaft 39 (fig. 2) carrying a fork 40 engaged to control with the grooved collar 36 and also a pendant arm 41 whose end is connected to the plunger 30 which moves in the hydraulic cylinders 28, 29.
When therefore the pressurized oil coming from the hydraulic pump 22 is delivered into the cylinder 28, the forces created, on the one hand, by the oil pressure acting on the plunger 30 and, on the other hand, by the device Torque detector acting on the fork 40 will oppose each other and the position taken by the shaft 39 will be determined by which of the forces will have the greatest impact. This shaft 39 with the parts attached to it therefore constitutes the balancing mechanism, the function of which is to determine when changes in the gear ratio should
be carried out in one direction or the other depending on the relative magnitude of the motor speed and the torque or resistance of ferte by the driven components. When the thrust due to the resistance torque changes direction as a result of sudden deceleration, this thrust, instead of opposing the thrust corresponding to the speed of the engine, is added to it, and then a sudden movement of the plunger 30 causes the closing of the valve 31 (fig. 3), overcoming the tension of its spring and thus stops any sudden movement of the balancing device.
Instead of the screw and nut mechanism described above, it is however possible to use to couple the shafts 10 and 12 a planetary gear device such as that shown in FIG. 5. This device comprises central pinions 43, 44 fixed to shafts 10 and 12 respectively and complementary planet wheels 45, 46 carried by a crosillon member 47 capable of a limited rocking movement. For the purpose in question, the transmission must have a ratio greater or less than 1.1 so that a definite reaction is obtained which constitutes the measurement of the torque.
The bottom cross brace 47 can be connected to the other elements of the balancing device by any desired means, such as, for example, the trin gles 48, 49. To control and actuate the various dog clutches and ± band reins which cover the various speed ratios of which the transmission is capable, use is made of a shaft 50 for coupling and uncoupling the clutches and a selector camshaft 51 (FIG. 6). These shafts are arranged one next to the other and parallel to the main axis of the transmission.
A rocker arm 52 is attached to the shaft 50, the opposite ends of which are engaged with plungers 53, 54 (fig. 7 and 8), which move in hydraulic cylinders 55, 56. These two cylinders communicate with a gearbox. distribution 57 by means of orifices controlled by a semi-rotary disc valve 58 which, in its extreme positions, admits oil under pressure to one or the other of the cylinders, while in at the same time it opens the communication between the opposite cylinder and an exhaust port.
Pressurized oil is supplied by a separate pump (not shown) powered by the engine, and cylinders 55, 56 have ports in their walls to relieve the system of any excessive pressure when the shaft rocks up to. one or the other of its extreme positions.
This second oil line can also be regulated by an adjustable pressure relief valve to allow some of the oil to escape when the friction brakes are on. The control of this disc valve is effected by a pin 59 which passes through the cover of the distribution box and externally carries a lever 60 capable of a limited rocking movement between stop pins 61, 62.
One end of lever 60 is connected to a plunger 63 which can slide inside a solenoid 64, while the other end of said lever 60 is arranged to be in engagement with another lever 65 maintained. by a spring 66 engaged with a multi-boss cam 67 secured to the selector camshaft 51. As will be appreciated, if the shaft 51 and cam 67 are rotated by a sufficient angle, the lever 65 will switch and will move arm 60 and disc valve 58 from the position shown in fig. 9 to the opposite extreme position shown in fig. 7 and 8.
When the disc valve 58 is in the position shown in fig. 7 and 8, the pressurized oil is admitted into the cylinder dre 56, therefore the plunger 54 is raised and the shaft 50 tilted into the appropriate position to disengage the dog clutch or release the band brake which would have been previously, held by this shaft in the operating position, which has the effect of bringing the transmission to neutral; When another gear train is to be engaged, the disc valve 58 is rowed to its original position by the solenoid 64 which is energized by an electric pulse as will be explained later.
In order to allow the shaft 50 to bring about the engagement and disengagement of the various gear trains as appropriate, this shaft carries sliding forks such as 70 in FIGS. 10 and 11 of the tines to actuate the dog clutches 21 and 17, and also two crank arms such as 80 in FIG. 12 intended to actuate the band brakes which can tighten the drums 18 and 19. In this connection, it should be noted that the non-rotating member 21 of the dog clutch is released by sliding to the left as seen in fig. 1 or engages with the corresponding part 20 by sliding to the right.
On the other hand, the non-rotating member 17 of the dog clutch can be engaged with the corresponding part 131 by sliding to the left, or with the corresponding part 141 by sliding to the right, or else can occupy the middle position in which it is represented in fig. 1, in which position it is free and independent of the two parts 131 and 14 '.
Considering now in the first place the sliding members 21 and 17 of the dog clutches, each of them is arranged to be actuated by one of the two forks mounted on the shaft 50 such as that shown in FIGS. 10 and 11. Each fork 70 has a hollow hub 71 which turns the shaft 50 and also carries a pivot latch 72 provided with a locking tooth 78 which can pass through a slot that the hub 71 presents. when the latch 72 is lowered by the action of a corresponding cam 74 fixed to the selector camshaft 51.
When the boss of the cam 74 leaves the latch 72, as shown in fig. 10, a. spring 75 attached to the tail of the latch 72 and to the hub 71 lifts the locking tooth 73 out of contact with the shaft 50 thereby allowing the latter to rotate without imparting any movement to the fork 70. To some extent point located inside the hub 71, the shaft 50 has a helical groove 76 in which the locking tooth 73 can engage when the latch 72 is lowered by the cam 74.
As will be understood, when the locking tooth 74 is thus engaged in the helical groove 76, any subsequent rotary movement of the shaft 50 will communicate a translational movement to the hub 71 and to the fork 70.
It should be remembered that the shaft 50 undergoes a simple rocking movement communicated by the hydraulic plungers 53, 54 and that as long as it is at rest it occupies one or the other of its two extreme positions that can be call up the clutch position and the clutch position respectively.
In the mechanism shown in fig. 10, the shaft 50 is in the disengaged position, as in fig. The shaft 50 is believed to have tilted into the clutch position, although the rotation is not indicated by the figure because the cutting plane is displaced by an amount equal to the displacement of the fork 70.
To prevent the locking tooth 73 from disengaging from the helical groove 76 while the fork is in the displaced position, there is provided on the latch 72 a protrusion 77 which, while the latch is lowered, can slide freely. under a stationary guard pin 78 fixed in a suitable position inside the crankcase. It can therefore be seen that as long as the extension 77 is covered by the pin 78, the latch cannot be raised, but when the hub 71 and the fork 70 are brought back to the disengaged position, the extension 77 is released from the end of the guard pin 78 and thus leaves the latch free to disengage from its engagement with the shaft 50.
In this regard, it should be noted that when the shaft 50 is in the disengaged position, the depth of the groove 76 under. tooth 73 of the latch is insufficient to allow the boss of the cam to pass over the latch as long as the latter and the fork have not undergone the lateral movement of translation, it is only after this displacement that the ; cam can move forward again.
However, the helical grooves 76 are made significantly deeper at their rear end 76a, as shown in FIG. 6A, so that the camshaft 51 can be returned quickly and directly to the neutral position, if necessary, by first tilting the shaft 50 a little beyond its normal disengaged position, whereupon the part of the groove under the latch will be deep enough to allow the cam to pass over the latch.
Assuming that the mechanism shown in Figs. 10 and 11 is that which is intended to actuate the dog clutch 21, we can say that the mechanism intended for. actuating the dog clutch 17 is exactly similar, except for the fact that since two translational movements are required, the shaft 50 has at this point helical grooves having their right and left pitches 76 'and 762, and the hub 71 of the fork is provided with two latches such as 72 arranged to be selectively lowered by two cams 74 'and 742 wedged on the shaft 51.
This device is therefore capable of moving said fork to the left or to the right, or to bring it back to the central position.
The friction brakes for controlling the drums 18 and 19 are also of identical design, so that a description of the mechanism applied to the drum 18 shown in FIG. 12 should suffice for both.
As can be seen, the brake comprises two friction members 81 articulated together by an equalizer system 82, the proportions of the lever arms of which are such that a minimal force is sufficient to engage the band brakes, and also connected to a control lever 83 which, in turn, is articulated at 84 to a crank arm 80 carried by the shaft 50 for engaging and disengaging the clutches. The hub of said arm of my level 80 carries a pivot latch 85 placed under the action of a spring and capable of being lowered to engage with a recess 86 made in the shaft 50. This lowering s' operates by a cam 87 fixed on the shaft 51.
The arrangement and operation of the latch device 85 are exactly similar to those of the latch device 72 previously described, except that in the present case the latch engages in a simple recess 86 made in the shaft and thus prints. at the crank arm 80 a partial rotational movement when the shaft 50 tilts. The lo quet 85 is arranged so as to establish, while it is in its lowered position, an electrical connection with a contact latch 88, this for a purpose which will be explained later.
The friction brake acting on the drum 19 is similar to that which has just been described and depends for its operation, among other things, on a recess 86 'made in the shaft 50, on the cam 87' wedged on the shaft 51, and the contact latch 88 ', shown in fig. 6. This brake sets in motion reversal.
Now when, in order to bring into service a particular transmission ratio, it is necessary to engage the non-rotating dog clutch member 17 with a corresponding part which is driven by a rotational movement, it is obviously disengaged. It is desirable to ensure that the relative movement of rotation between them is zero or of low value before seeking to put the dogs into engagement.
Means are provided whereby, when changing gears, the engine speed is first reduced to a low level and then gradually increased, and the disengagement on one side is provided so as to occur while the engine is running. begins to lose its original speed, tan say that the clutch of the next required train is delayed until the components to be coupled together have reached synchronism.
It should be remembered that with a transmission of the type envisaged, in which a series of central reaction gears of staggered diameter must be successively immobilized to obtain the different transmission ratios required, a slowing down of the engine speed and subsequent acceleration while the transmission is disengaged or in neutral will cause the central reaction wheel to be engaged to spin from side to side, then slow down and finally start to rotate. before, unless naturally it is immobilized by the iron meture of the clutch which is associated with it at a favorable moment.
However, to determine the instant at which the change in the direction of rotation of the reaction wheel takes place and thus find the favorable moment for closing the dog clutch, it is associated with members 131 and 141 of the clutch. dogs of the detection devices which may be of the type indicated in fig. 13. The device that the figure represents applied to. the rotating member 131 of the dog clutch comprises a slight friction element 90 which can be raised or lowered to be brought into or out of engagement with the rotating part 131 by means of a lever 91 actuated by a cam 92 por tee by camshaft 51.
This friction element is freely supported by two fixed reaction pins 93 which pass through elongated slots 94 made in the limb in question, which allows it a certain freedom of movement around the axis of rotation of the body. rotating organ. The friction member is also articulated at 95 to a sliding rod returned by a spring, which carries a stop 96 which, in one of the extreme positions of the rod, comes into contact with a contact latch 97. The mechanism is arranged. so that when the clutch member 131 is going to be engaged by the non-rotary sliding member 17, the engine gases are first closed and then gradually reopened.
Simultaneously with the deceleration of the engine, the cam 92 switches the lever 91 and thus presses the friction member 90 against the rotary clutch member 131. Assuming that the driving and trailing shafts are both in motion, the the clutch unit 131 and the central reaction wheel associated with it will rotate forward in the direction indicated by the arrow 98 while the engine is running at low speed; and during this time the electric circuit controlled by the contacts 96, 97 will remain or green. But when the engine speed increases, the forward rotation of the clutch member 131 will gradually slow down and be followed by a reverse movement indicated by arrow 99.
As soon as this change of direction takes place, the friction member 90 will move relative to its feedback studs 93 and bring the contacts 96, 97 closer together. The electrical circuit closed by the contacts 96, 97 contains suitable apparatus capable of cause the closing movement of the clutch at the instant when the state of synchronism is reached.
Fig. 14 indicates a modification of the mechanism just described, which differs from it mainly in that the friction member 90 is in the form of an electromagnet and is engaged with the rotating member of the clutch when it is engaged. takes place by the application of an exciting current to its coil 100.
A mechanism similar to that described with the help of Figs. 13 or 14 is also intended for use in conjunction with the rotary clutch 141.
In cases where the corresponding clutch members to be engaged are both rotated, a somewhat modified form of synchronicity detector must be used. Thus in the exemplary embodiment envisaged, it will be understood that the conjugate clutch members 20, 21 serving to cover the direct drive or high speed are both rotating and therefore cannot be treated in the same way as the clutch members 13 'and 14', it is therefore proposed to use, instead of the previous detector, a device such as that shown in FIG. 15.
When the direct or high speed clutch is going to be engaged, the motor speed is reduced and then gradually increased as mentioned previously, but during this last operation the relative rotational movement between successive central gears will decrease. gradually and will end up changing direction, the instant when this change of direction takes place marking the state of synchronism favorable to the clutch closing maneuver.
A mechanism capable of detecting the instant of change of direction of the relative rotational movement taking place in any two of the central gears will therefore suffice for the object in question now.
Although omitted from fig. 1 for clarity, the mechanism shown in fig. 15 can conveniently be placed next to the friction wheel 18 so as to detect the instant when a change in the direction of the relative movement between the hollow shafts 14 and 15 occurs. For this purpose, therefore, the mechanism in question comprises a disc 101 mounted with splines on the hub of the clutch member 14 'and a second disc 102 fixed to the hub of the adjacent friction wheel 18.
On the inner face of the disc 101, that is to say that facing the disc 102, is mounted a friction ring 103 in a manner which allows it a limited rotational movement relative to the disc 101 and subject to control. a spring 104 which returns the ring to one of its extreme positions. On the periphery of the disc 101 is provided an insulated friction ring 105 in connection with a Couta @ t $ lectriciue or brush 106, Another contact <B> 107 </B> mounted on the disc 101 has the effect,
when it is touched by a projection 108 of the friction ring 103, to connect the friction ring to the mass and thus to close a control circuit arranged to cause the closing of the clutch 20, 21. The friction ring 103 is normally out of contact with the disc 102 which faces it, but it is brought into engagement with it if necessary by the action of an oscillating shaft 109 having arms which press against the disc 101 At the time therefore to engage high speed, these two discs are first pressed against each other by the oscillating shaft 109, while at the same time the engine throttle is closed.
As long as the engine speed is low, the relative rotation between these discs will keep the friction ring 103 in the extreme position in which it is shown in FIG. 15, the control circuit comprising the friction ring 105 and the contacts 106 and 107 being kept open.
But during the subsequent acceleration of the motor the mentioned relative rotation will gradually slow down, and finally there will be a change of direction in the relative rotation of the discs 101, 102, and as a result the friction ring 103 will be brought in. the opposite extreme position in which the projection 108 bearing on the contact 107 will ground the friction ring 105, thus causing the clutch to close.
From what has already been said, it will be understood that the shaft 50 for engaging and disengaging the clutches is always subject to the control of the selector camshaft 51, the function of which is to determine which of the Different clutches must be put into operation each time a change takes place.
It is now necessary to consider the means provided for the control of the selector camshaft 51, which is in fact arranged to be actuated either by the automatic balancing mechanism shown in FIG. 2, either by a hand lever, or finally by both of these devices, FIG. 21 shows a sector box 111 containing two hand levers 112 and 113. This box can be mounted next to the steering column or in any other position where it will be within easy reach of the driver.
The lever 112 which is connected to the automatic balancing position has two active positions, one denoting that the automatic change mechanism is in operation, the other that said mechanism is inoperative. For its operation, said lever is connected by an appropriate mechanism whatever (not shown) to the valve 27 which controls the access of pressurized oil to the cylinders 28, 29 (fig. 3).
While the automatic balancing mechanism is in control of the gearbox, the pressurized oil delivered by the pump 22 (fig. 1), is admitted to the cylinder 28, and at the same time the lever 32 compresses the spring of mushroom valve 31 and allows oil to enter and exit the opposing cylinder 29. but any sudden release of oil from this cylinder is liable to be blocked by the valve 31 which then automatically engages in its seat.
By operating the hand lever 112 to the non-automatic position in which it is shown in FIG. 21, the said valve 27 receives a clockwise rotational movement as shown in FIG. 2 and is brought to a position in which the pressurized oil is returned to cylinder 29, while the opposite cylinder 28 is emptied through an exhaust port <B> 9W </B> and that the lever 32 is also moved so as to allow the mushroom valve 31 to fall back firmly on its seat.
In these circumstances, the plunger 30 will enter the cylinder 28 and will be held in this position not only by the pressure of the oil, but also by the reaction from the neck present in the driven shaft 12.
The other lever 113 of the sector gearbox, intended to allow manual control of the changes made in the gearbox, can take several active positions corresponding in the example considered to Reverse "," Neutral "," First "," Second "," Third "and" Fourth "forward gears. This lever is connected to a shaft 114 by a crank arm 115 (fig. 2), and by other organs. appropriate intermediaries not shown.
The sector box can also carry an indicator panel 117 presenting a series of indicator lights 118 recessed in the panel which correspond to the different conditions prevailing in the gearbox, each recess also containing an electric lamp 119 capable of lighting up when the gearbox is in the condition indicated by the corresponding warning light. The electric current for the ignition of these lamps can be controlled by contact devices (not shown) capable of being closed by the forks and movable arms provided for engaging or disengaging the various clutches and brakes.
The controlled connection of the arm 41 of the automatic balancing mechanism with the selector camshaft 51 and also the connection of the hand lever 113 with the selector camshaft comprise an elastic coupling device such as that shown in the figures. fig. 16 to 19. This coupling comprises two control discs 120, 121 mounted idle on the shaft 114 (fig. 2 and 16), and an intermediate controlled disc 122 which carries an arm 123 (fig. 17), integral with it, which is connected to a corresponding arm 124 mounted on the selector camshaft 51.
The control disc 121 is controlled by means of damping springs 125 to an arm 126 fixed to the shaft 114, which shaft can be imparted a positive rotational movement by the hand lever 113 as is the case. has already explained, although this rotational movement may not necessarily be transmitted immediately to the control disc 121. Adjacent to the disc 120 is a crank arm 127 which can rotate on the shaft 114 and which is connected to the disc by shock absorbing springs similar to those described above. The arm 127 is connected by a rod or rod 128 to the arm 41 of the automatic balancing mechanism.
The controlled disc 122 carries at its periphery a tilting cleat 130 mounted on a pi vot and capable of coupling the disc 122 to one or the other of the two control discs 120, 121. To enable this to be done. coupling, the two control discs 120, 121 have at their periphery a notch 131, the front wall of which is rounded as indicated at 132, while the rear wall is angular as at 135 and a little higher than the rest of the periphery of the disc in which the notch is made. Each control disc also contains at the bottom of its notch 131 a plunger 134 which, under the impulse of a res out, tends to drive out the tilting cleat when the latter is engaged in the notch. The lower front edge of the rocker cleat 130 is also rounded as indicated at 135.
The dis position of the tilting cleat 130 relative to the two control discs is such that when the notches 131 undergo angular displacement, the circular periphery of one of the discs engaged under the corresponding end of the tilting cleat 130 forces the opposite end. of said cleat to remain engaged on command in the notch 131 of the other say that.
As will be understood, when the mechanism is in the arrangement shown in FIG. 16, the control disc 121 is positively mated to the disc 122 and therefore the two must rotate together. But if the control disc 120 or the group of the two discs 121, 122 move relative to each other and assume a position in which the two notches 131 come to lie in line, the tilting cleat 130 will be found. for the moment centralized.
If the relative movement of the discs continues to the point of moving the bowels 131 in the opposite direction to that shown in fig. 16, the stopper 130 will tilt and engage in the notch 131 of the control disc 120 while disengaging at the same time from its engagement with the disc 121. Thus the one, whatever it is, of the two control discs 120, 121 which will have its notch 131 in advance of the other will take charge of the ordered disc 122.
Now to change gears from lower gears to higher gears, this coupling is moved clockwise either by the hand lever 113 acting through the arm 115 or by the balancing mechanism. automatic acting through the intermediary of the arm 127, but in fig. 16 the mechanism is shown in a manner which indicates that the selector camshaft 51 is fully actuated by the manual control 113, while the automatic control device is not in action at the moment, or, if it is in action,
that it is at present substantially depressed because the torque in the driven shaft is considerably in excess of the torque in the motor.
It has already been mentioned that when there is a change in the gear ratio, the engine speed is first temporarily slowed down in order to relieve the gears of the control neck and thus facilitate the disengagement of the trains in engagement, and that this speed is then gradually accelerated to reach the state of synchronism favorable to the engagement of the next train to be used. To this end, a device such as that shown in FIG. 20.
In fig. 20, the shaft 140 carrying the accelerator pedal 141, and another control arm 142 are coupled to the throttle rod 143 via a three-piece coupling 144 generally resembling that. shown in fig. 16. The shaft 140 is under the action of the res out 145 which serves to close the throttle when the pedal 141 is released, while the additional control arm 142 is returned to the throttle opening position by a spring 146 and is further connected by a rod 147 to a plunger 148 sliding in a noid solé 149.
It should be understood that the coupling 144 is arranged so that, whichever of the two control members tends most towards the throttle shutoff, that one takes charge of the throttle rod 143 . Since therefore the arm 142 is normally held in the position indicated by the spring 146, the accelerator pedal will usually have full throttle control, but when the arm 142 is pulled to the right by the action of the solenoid 149 on the pedal. plunger 148, the throttle will be closed regardless of the position of pedal 141.
Next to the plunger 148 is disposed a sliding member <B> 150 </B> from which protrude for a certain distance the arms 151, 152 which can be attacked by a finger 153 fixed to the plunger 148 during the movements of the latter. ci tending to move it closer to or away from the solenoid. In one of the positions of the sliding member 150, its front end establishes an electrical connection between two contacts 154, while in its other extreme position it breaks this connection. The electrical contacts 154 are shunted by a resistor 155 and arranged in series with the solenoid 149.
Referring again to fig. 6, it can be seen that the power source for these electrical control circuits, shown in the form of a battery 160, is connected by one pole to ground and by the other pole to an arm 161 carried by the shaft of putting the clutches in gear and out of gear and isolated from this shaft. When the latter switches to the disengaged position, the arm 161 touches a contact 162 by which the current is sent to the solenoid 149 and returns to the ground by way of another contact device 163 closed by a cam mounted on the camshaft selector 51.
The current driving the solenoid 149, this will attract the plunger and cause the throttle to close, but the same action will also move the sliding member 150 and will cause the separation of the contacts 154 and the interposition of the resistor 155 in series with the solenoid. By this action, the magnetic effect of the solenoid is considerably weakened and consequently the spring 146 can return the throttle regulator gradually to its previous degree of opening,
while the partially energized solenoid exerts a damping action analogous to that of a dash-pot. During the acceleration of the engine resulting from this gradual opening of the throttle a train of gears will be engaged, whereupon the inclination of the shaft 50 to the "clutch" position will cut off the arrival of the engine. current to so lenoid 149.
At the same time as the current is sent to the solenoid 149 as described above, the closing of the arm 161 on the contact 162 will also connect to the battery 160 the solenoid 64 which controls the intervention of the hydraulic valve to restore the power. shaft 50 from the disengaged position to the clutch position, but it must be remembered that the closing of this circuit depends on the closing of a contact by one or other of the synchronism detection devices depending on the combination which will be engaged.
As soon as the state of synchronism is reached in this sensing device which is in operation for the moment, a current will flow in the solenoid 64 and causing the displacement of the disc valve 58, which in turn will see it. pressurized oil to the cylinder 55 and thus allow the plunger 53 to tilt the shaft 50 and bring it into the clutch position.
It should be noted that the cams 74 ', 74z, 87' and 74 and 87 are wedged at different angles on the drive camshaft and that, as a result, they come into active engagement with the gear members. actuation of clutches associated with them one after the other in the required order. Therefore, not only is it impossible to engage two different gear trains simultaneously, but changes from low to high ratios can only be effected by passing successively through the various intermediate ratios in their natural order.
It will also be understood that the means described above for relieving the operating torque of the train in operation at the instant of disengagement and for delaying the engagement of the next train to be used until the state of synchronism is reached. between the components to be engaged, can be applied with equal advantage to various other forms of variable speed transmissions.
