Internal combustion engine with compression ignition and injection of liquid fuel. The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine with compression ignition and injection of liquid fuel, with a combustion chamber that takes up the air charge as completely as possible at the end of the compression stroke, which is designed as a revolving body and into which a channel arranged in a hot body opens tangentially, which connects the chamber with the cylinder space.
Internal combustion engines of this type are described in other patents of the applicant (for example Swiss patent no. 160250). In this patent, the combustion chamber is approximately spherical in shape and the fuel is injected in a jet, the axis of which has approximately the direction of a diameter. In other words, it is directed to a point which is shifted from the position of the nozzle with respect to the chamber axis by an angle before) approximately 180.
The internal combustion engine according to the invention is characterized in that the fuel is injected in a jet, the axis of which lies with the axis of the connecting channel in a plane of symmetry of the combustion chamber and is directed to a point on a hot part of the combustion chamber wall the chamber axis is offset in relation to the injection nozzle in the direction of the air circulation by an angle between 120 and 165, and that the confluence of the channel lies outside this angle.
The angle is expediently between 120 and 150. The mouth of the connec tion channel can be at this size of the angle against the injection nozzle, based on the chamber axis, in the air circulation direction by an angle between 180 and 225 ver.
The fuel jet is expediently entirely on one side of the axis of the combustion chamber in such a way that the fuel is injected into the latter in the sense of the rotational movement of the air.
In this way, the fuel is mainly fed into parts of the chamber where the circulating air has a high speed, expediently in such a way that the majority of the amount of air must flow through the fuel jet. The middle part of the combustion chamber, in which the axis for the circulating air flows, needs the smallest amount of fuel, because the speed of the air flow is low at that point. It is desirable that the combustion gases be carried away from the jet and replaced with fresh air that enters and circulates in the combustion chamber so that combustion continues until fuel injection ceases.
The position and direction of the fuel jet are appropriately dimensioned for the type and the speed of circulation of the air charge so that when the machine is fully loaded, the combustion gases are not driven back into the jet by the circulating air until the air in the combustion chamber is used as completely as possible for combustion has been and that then the fuel injection stops.
The drawings relate to some exemplary embodiments of the invention, namely: Fig. 1 is a schematic cross section through a cylinder head parallel to the cylinder axis, Fig. 2 to 4 are schematic sections of the combustion chamber of other embodiments, Fig. 5 is a diagram showing the limit positions for the axis 6 and 7 show two different positions of the combustion chamber with respect to the cylinder bore.
The machine according to Fig. 1 has a water-cooled cylinder head t1 on a cylinder B in which the piston C is arranged.- On one side of the cylinder bore, the cylinder head has a pocket D, which is held in the cylinder head by a screw ring F , insert E, which is insulated against heat emission, forms a spherical combustion chamber, which is delimited on the upper half by the water-cooled wall of the cylinder head. "In insert E there is a channel G which leads from the cylinder chamber to the combustion chamber and is tangential there joins.
The axis of this channel lies in a plane that goes through the center of the sphere. During the compression stroke, the air charge is driven through the channel into the combustion chamber, where, due to the tangential entry, it rotates around the sphere diameter normal to the plane of the connecting channel, hereinafter referred to as the "combustion chamber axis. In the upper part of the combustion chamber are in the plane through the axis of the channel G and the center of the sphere a fuel injector H and a heater J are arranged.
The axis of the injector H passes through the center of the combustion chamber. The fuel jet K is directed obliquely to the axis of the device H,. Its axis lies in the plane through the axis of the channel G and the center of the sphere and all fuel flows past the combustion chamber axis on one side.
According to FIG. 2, the axis of the jet g coincides with the axis of the injection device H, and this is inserted into the cylinder head in such a way that its axis passes the center of the combustion chamber.
According to FIG. 3, both the axis of the jet K and the axis of the injection device are parallel to the cylinder axis.
According to FIG. 4, both the axis of the jet K and the axis of the injection device H are normal to the cylinder axis.
According to FIGS. 1 to 3, the injection device is arranged in such a way that the jet K is directed onto a point of the hot insert E. According to Fig. 4, however, the beam is directed to a point on the upper wall of the combustion chamber and this wall is provided with a lining L, which for the most part is out of contact with the what is water-cooled combustion chamber wall and therefore assumes a high temperature during operation.
Fig. 5 shows a diagram of the Greif zen, between which the beam axis is conveniently located. The outer circle D means the section of the combustion chamber wall with the plane of symmetry that holds the beam axis ent; the injection device H is indicated above. If the air circles in the direction of the arrow M, the jet lens is inclined so that the fuel flows into the chamber in the sense of the rotary motion of the air. The upper slope limit is indicated by the arrow P.
If r is the radius of the circle D, the arrow P runs tangential to a circle whose radius is equal to 1/2 R. The inclination is expediently not less than indicated by the arrow 1V, which runs tangentially to a circle with a radius equal to ¼. The angular values corresponding to these numbers are as follows: the end of the arrow P has an angular distance of 120 'from the injection nozzle in the sense of the circulation of the inflowing air and the end of the arrow N an angular distance of about 150.
Irr Fig. 6, the combustion chamber D is indicated by several circles on the right side and the cylinder bore by a larger circle B. The connecting channel G between the Brerinkamnrer and the cylinder space has a rectangular cross-section with rounded corners and the vertical plane through its axis is represented by the dot-dash line Q. This line Q goes through the center of the circle B, that is, the axis of the channel intersects the axis of the cylinder bore. This arrangement is appropriate.
The plane of symmetry of the combustion chamber, which contains the channel axis and the axis of the fuel jet, can be offset from the cylinder axis. In the borderline case, this plane can be arranged almost tangentially to the cylinder bore (see the dash-dotted line ST in FIG. 6). According to Fig. 7, the Ab was between this plane and the cylinder axis about a third of the radius of the cylinder bore.
It can be useful if the combustion chamber has the shape of a body of revolution whose meridian is not a semicircle. For example, the combustion chamber can have the shape of a double concave or convex lens. Furthermore, it can be cylindrical or barrel-shaped or spindle-shaped and consist of two truncated cones, the smaller base areas of which butt against one another in the center of the combustion chamber, the chamber axis running transversely to the fuel jet axis.
The invention is also applicable to engines with horizontal cylinders. The plane of symmetry of the combustion chamber, which contains the jet and channel axis, parallel to the cylinder axis, is expedient; but the invention covers me versions in which the plane of symmetry is oblique to the cylinder axis.
