Process for the production of grinding and polishing media. The invention relates to the Her position of grinding and polishing bodies, white surface are interspersed with artificially created cavities and therefore have a cell-shaped or honeycomb structure, for example, made of abrasives such as corundum, silicon carbide, emery, glass paper and the like using or Mitver - use of synthetic resins as binders.
As the binder, for example, phenolic resins, phthalic acid-based resins, urea-formaldehyde resins and the like can be used.
The production of abrasive articles of the type identified above using artificial resins as binders is difficult in that the abrasive articles have to be heated to higher temperatures for the purpose of solidification. There is a risk that the resins will become so soft or even liquid when heated that the gases contained in the cavities can escape and the loosened structure is lost.
As has been found, these difficulties can be overcome by ensuring that the synthetic resins have such a high softening point at the start of the heat treatment carried out to create the cavities and solidify the resins that the resins do not flow during the heat treatment finds. The resins with a higher softening point can for example be prepared from resins with a lower softening point by heating or by storage at ordinary temperature.
The bringing about of the higher softening point should generally be traced back to polymerization processes, condensation processes or processes of both types. In certain cases, these processes can be accelerated and / or accelerated by aids such as catalysts. be favored.
The resins can be subjected to the "thickening" pretreatment on their own or in admixture with the abrasive material or a portion of the abrasive material.
The cellular or honeycomb-like structure can be produced, for example, by adding substances to the mixture of abrasive material and binding agent which are capable of developing gas bubbles.
In certain cases, the development of the gas bubbles can be brought about or supported by auxiliaries such as catalysts. Substances which decompose when the temperature rises with the release of gas, such as, for example, carbonates or bicarbonates of alkalis, ammonium and amines, urea superogide, etc.
To promote the decomposition of bodies such as urea sulphate and the like, catalysts, for example manganese superogyd, can be added.
The amount of the loosening effecting substance can vary within considerable limits. If necessary, you can manage with extremely small quantities, for example a few hundredths of a percent or even less. It has been shown, namely: that it is already sufficient to add a number of. to produce tiny bubbles, which then serve as germinal bubbles for the vapors that develop.
In practicing the invention, one can proceed, for example, in such a way that the artificial resin, for example in liquid or paste-like form, is thoroughly mixed with the required amount of abrasive grain and the mixture is exposed to elevated temperatures for some time.
In the case of the formaldehyde-phenolic resin known under the name "Bakelite", temperatures of about 50 to 160 'have proven to be suitable. The duration of the heat treatment depends on the level of the temperature; in cases in which a few hours are sufficient when using higher temperatures, it is necessary, for example, to heat for a correspondingly longer period when using lower temperatures.
By applying suitable measures, such as changing the pressure, it is possible, if necessary, to shift the temperature favorable for the precondensation and thereby influence the condensation process in certain directions, for example shorten it. After it has cooled completely, the pretreated mixture is expediently incorporated into a propellant which provides gas bubbles and is distributed as uniformly as possible.
The propellant can be incorporated in the state of finest distribution, as well as in a coarser form suitable for the formation of larger bubbles. The mixture is then passed into the desired body, for example a disc shape, and is conveniently heated in the mold to the temperature suitable for solidification. The temperature is allowed to rise gradually, for example from about 50 to <B> 60 '</B> to about <B> 100 </B> to 120'. If the body has become sufficiently tough as a result of the gradual heating, it can be heated further.
The final hardening then takes place at temperatures that depend on the type of resin used; in the case of "Bakelite", the final hardening is expediently carried out at temperatures of 100%.
When working according to the invention be-the grinding compound when heated, their cell-shaped BEZW. honeycomb-like structure without fear of disturbances of the internal structure or collapse.
According to one embodiment of the inven tion, the procedure is such that the mixture of abrasive grain and pretreated binder resin is heated to higher temperatures with the addition of very small amounts of propellant, for example ammonium bicarbonate, and the mass is heated to higher temperatures after it has achieved the desired result from the development of gas bubbles Has assumed volume, pressurizes it and continues to heat it with suitable temperature control.
After the gas respectively. If the development of steam has subsided and the mass has attained sufficient toughness, it can be brought to the higher temperature required to achieve the final solidification without disturbances, such as collapse, occurring.
If the synthetic resin to be used as a binder is stronger or more solid at ordinary temperature. dry form, it is expedient to use a blowing agent which only decomposes at a higher temperature, for example at a temperature at which the binder becomes plastic.
In certain cases, as has been found, it is possible to dispense with the special addition of gas bubble-forming substances. One proceeds, for example, that the previously treated resin binder is mixed with the required amount of abrasive grain, or a mixture of resin and abrasive grain is subjected to the thickening treatment and the mass mixed with the abrasive grain is converted into the desired shape He is subjected to heating using excess pressure and then solidifying at high temperatures, as described above. Here, too, you can use grinding media from loosened,
For example, a cellular or honeycomb structure, they aim.
By suitable choice of Arbeitsbedin conditions, for example with respect to the amount of abrasive, type and amount of loosening agent, etc. you have it in hand to regulate the degree of loosening of the grinding material in the desired manner. By adding relatively large quantities of binding agents and using molds that allow the desired increase in volume, it is possible, for example, to produce abrasive articles with an apparent density of 0.2 or less.
Grinding disks of such a low apparent density have an extraordinary Festig speed and can be operated at Umlaufgeschwindigkei th, which you could not bring to use when using solid grinding wheels because of the risk of explosion. According to the invention produced bodies can be used accordingly fine abrasive grains with advantage as a polishing body.
The production of the mixtures intended for processing on abrasive bodies can, for example, take place in such a way that the abrasive grain is worked into the warm synthetic resin and, after cooling, the blowing agent which produces gas bubbles is incorporated.
One can, for example, proceed in such a way that one uses a blowing agent that only delivers gas at higher temperatures, for example those above <B> 100 '</B> C, and' this, if necessary, together with the abrasive grain, into the warm resin mass works at temperatures at which gas evolution does not yet take place. Finally, one can also proceed in such a way that an intimate mixture of cold resin, abrasive grain and blowing agent is produced.
The invention is explained below using a few examples in which synthetic resin is used for the production of abrasive tools, which has been pretreated as follows: 300 g of Bakelite were heated to about 150 ° C. for a few hours; the progress of the condensation was monitored by taking samples, and the heating was stopped after samples of the resin could be drawn into long threads at room temperature. <I> Examples: </I> 1. 30 g of the precondensed Bakelite are intimately mixed with 0.1 g ammonium carbonate and 70 g silicon carbide (grain 80).
The mixture, which takes up a volume of about 55 cm ', is placed in a closable mold of about 82 cm', the upper part of which is provided with fine openings that prevent the mixture from escaping after the mixture has been introduced into the mold air and excess gases, but do not allow the mass to escape from the closed mold. The mold loaded with the mixture is placed in the oven at 120 to 140 C, the gas that begins to evolve displaces the air and drives the mass.
Demolding can generally take place after 1 to 3 hours. The abrasive body obtained has a vesicular, porous (cellular) structure.
It has experienced an increase in volume of around <B> 50% </B>. The void volume of the finished grinding wheel is about 30% of the total volume.
2. 30 g of the precondensed synthetic resin, 0.1 g ammonium carbonate and 40 g silicon carbide (400 grit) are intimately mixed and shaped into a shape whose volume is 150% greater than the volume of the mass introduced. By treating the mixture according to Example 1, you get a grinding wheel whose cavity volume makes up about 60% of the total volume.
3. 25 g of precondensed synthetic resin are intimately mixed with 0.25 g of ammonium carbonate and 13 g of silicon carbide (400 grit) and placed in an open mold with a volume of about 190 cm3. It is heated to 50 to <B> 60 '</B> C for about 15 hours, with little floating taking place. The temperature is then gradually increased to about <B> 100 </B> C within 2 hours. During this period the main activity takes place.
Then the temperature is gradually increased further with the proviso that the driving is slowed down at the desired moment, for example when filling the form. As has been found, the process is managed in such a way that the progressive condensation of the resin and the associated solidification prevent the mass from being pushed further beyond the desired level. After the grinding wheel has become sufficiently firm, it is heated to a temperature suitable for complete maintenance.
The body obtained has an apparent density of about 0.2.
