La fig. 2 est un détail d'une variante -de cette première forme et représente un méca nisme permettant de régler la position du -dis- tributeur relativement aux orificesd'échap pement du cylindre, de façon à obtenir des volumes de compression variables dans le cy lindre; Les fig. d et 4 sont des coupes, prises à angle droit l'une de l'autre, d'une deuxième forme di'exécution constituée aussi par un moteur à piston unique;
Les fig. 5 et 6 sont des coupes verticales, prises à angle droit l'une .de l'autre, d'une troisième forme d'exécution, constituée par un moteur du type à pistons en opposition; Les fig. 7 et 8 sont -des coupes verticales, prises également à angle droit l'une de l'au- tre, d'une variante de -cette troisième forme d'exécution;
La fig. 9 est une coupe verticale de 1a partie inférieure du .moteur représenté aux fig. 7 et 8, représentant la partie du méca nisme actionnant le piston de la pompe à air du moteur, non représentée dans les fig. 7 et 8;
Two-stroke type internal combustion engine. The object of the invention is an internal combustion engine of the two-stroke type, characterized in that it comprises an engine cylinder, at least one engine piston acting in this cylinder and controlling the shaft at my main level of the engine. , - intake and exhaust ports drilled in the walls (the cylinder and arranged to be covered and uncovered by the piston-engine acting in the cylinder,
an air pump cylinder surrounding the lower part of the cylinder-motor, a piston controlled by the crank shaft and acting in the cylinder of the air pump, the operation of this piston being adjusted with respect to the components engines with which it cooperates, the upper end of the cylinder of the air pump communicating directly with the orifices -d'ad mission of the cylinder of the engine.
The attached drawings show, by way of examples, several embodiments of the engine according to the invention, some embodiments being of the single piston type and others - of the type with pistons in opposition, the fuel being injected inside the cylinder.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a first embodiment which is a single piston engine provided with a .distributor for determining, in conjunction with the piston stroke, the exhaust period.
Fig. 2 is a detail of a variant of this first form and shows a mechanism making it possible to adjust the position of the -distributor relative to the exhaust ports of the cylinder, so as to obtain variable compression volumes in the cylinder ; Figs. d and 4 are sections, taken at right angles to each other, of a second embodiment, also consisting of a single piston engine;
Figs. 5 and 6 are vertical sections, taken at right angles to each other, of a third embodiment, constituted by an engine of the piston type in opposition; Figs. 7 and 8 are vertical sections, also taken at right angles to each other, of a variant of this third embodiment;
Fig. 9 is a vertical section of the lower part of the motor shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, showing the part of the mechanism actuating the piston of the engine air pump, not shown in FIGS. 7 and 8;
Figs. 10 and 11 are horizontal and vertical sections, and Figs. 12 and 13 are similar-sections, relating to, two other embodiments each consisting of a motor of the piston type in opposition, which is provided:
of an air pump of a different shape from the previous ones and also representing a device for the -control of air admission to said air pump, and for actuating the piston of this pump.
The first embodiment shown in FIG. 1 is a two-stroke internal combustion engine of the single piston type. It comprises a cylinder 1, a piston-motor 2, moving in a reciprocating motion in the -cylinder 1, an annular air pump 3, surrounding the lower part of the -cylinder 1 and an annular piston 4, acting in the air pump cylinder 3.
The cylinder 1 is provided, at the lower end of its part uncovered by the piston when it is at its bottom dead center, with intake ports 5, for admission to the interior of cylinder 1 of the cylinder. air supplied by piston 4 of the air pump 3.
It is provided, in contrast to the -d'air admission orifices 5, with exhaust orifices 6, which terminate in a cage 7. Of a distributor 8, the details of which are described below, which is arranged to determine the exhaust period.
The orifices 5 and 6 are alternately uncovered and covered, that is to say alternately opened and closed by the udder 2 of the engine. The -cylinder -of the air pump, as seen in fig. 1, consists of the outer walls, the lower part of the cylinder 1 and a sleeve 9,
placed concentrically with said outer walls and forming a jacket for the outer part of the cylinder of the air pump, the piston then moving, with a reciprocating movement in the sleeve.
In another form of execution, the sleeve could slide over the outer walls of the air pump cylinder, with the air pump piston then reciprocating in the pump cylinder. .
The part .du outer frame, -in which the upper end of the sleeve 9 moves alternately, is mu nie -at least one orifice 11, communicating with the atmosphere and at least partially surrounding the upper end, -cylinder of the air pump 3. A.travers -these orifices 11, air is sucked inside said -cy linder during the downstroke or as piration. of the air pump, the opening and closing of the orifices being determined by movements imparted to the sleeve 9.
The movements imparted to the piston 4 of the air pump and to the sleeve 9, as shown in fig. 1, are obtained by means of two with auxiliary crank shafts 12, meshed with the main crank shaft 13 of the engine and, by means of rods 14 and 15, connected to the piston 4 of the air pump, to the sleeve 9 and to the auxiliary crank shaft 12, the strokes of these rods being adjusted or wedged with respect to one another, so that the intake ports 11 of the pump are uncovered when the piston 4,
of the air pump performs its downward suction stroke and that they are closed when the piston begins its upward exhaust stroke.
By arranging the orifices 11 as described above, very wide surfaces are obtained for the admission of air into the cylinder of the air pump, thus ensuring a maximum supply of air during each stroke of the air pump. suction - of the air pump.
On the other hand, the space which is located between the upper end of the cylinder of the air pump and the upper face of the pump piston is reduced when the piston reaches the end of its upward stroke or -exhaust to a value as low as the manufacturing conditions allow, from which it follows that, in practice,
all of the air drawn into the air pump will be sent to the engine cylinder.
In addition, as the movements: of the engine pis tone and the piston of the air pump are adjusted so that the air intake ports of the engine cylinder are closed by the piston, of the engine just when the piston of the air pump completes its delivery stroke, the air will be supplied to the engine cylinder with a minimum of resistance, during the entire time during which said intake ports are uncovered by the engine piston.
In order to obtain the greatest efficiency from the purging air, especially at high speed and in the event of overload, it is of the utmost importance that the cylinder of the engine is full of clean air after each stroke. motor.
To achieve this result, an appreciable time must elapse after the engine cylinder exhaust ports have been discovered, to allow the pressure in the engine cylinder to drop sufficiently before the intake ports. air pressure from the cylinder are uncovered, to prevent exhaust gases from entering the cylinder of the air pump.
However, since these two groups of orifices are discovered by the same piston of the engine, it follows that, whatever the time lag between the moment of opening of the exhaust and the subsequent moment at which the air intake ports are uncovered, the engine cylinder exhaust ports will remain open for the same period of time after the air intake ports are closed; this results in a portion of the new charge of combustion air being expelled before the exhaust ports are covered.
In the engine shown, the loss of air compression is avoided by means of the valve 8 previously discussed, which is adapted to determine the exhaust period in combination with the piston 2 of the engine. . This -distributor 8, which is cylindrical in shape, is placed in a cage 7, in the outer body 10 of the engine, adjacent to the exhaust ports 6 of cylinder 1 -of the engine and intermediate between said ports and the port d engine exhaust 16.
The distributor 8 rotates by means of the main crankshaft 13 of the engine, by means of an appropriate mechanism consisting of a chain transmission comprising a chain wheel 17 fixed on the axis of the distributor and a chain 18 which is mounted, on the one hand, on the wheel 17, and, on the other hand, on a wheel 19 which is moved by the crank shaft 13.
The distributor 8 is constructed and calibrated relative to the piston 2 of the engine so as to establish and cut off, in time, the communication between the exhaust ports 6 of the cylinder 1 of the engine and the exhaust port 16. The distributor can be attached to. its axis or be provided with a mechanism making it possible to vary its position, at will, relative to the exhaust ports 6, so as to obtain variable compression volumes.
For example, it could be moved so as to maintain communication with the exhaust port 16 until the exhaust ports 6 of cylinder 1 of the engine are just covered by the piston 2 of the engine for during the compression stroke, so as to allow combustion air to be expelled, thereby allowing an engine to run at no load and at as low a speed as would be possible if full compression were obtained.
From the foregoing, it is noted that the distributor is only exposed to the fluids contained in the engine cylinder while air is being introduced into it and during a short portion of the compression stroke, after which the orifices d The exhaust are again covered by the engine piston. There is therefore no risk of the dispenser being toasted or subjected to high pressure.
In a particular embodiment, it could be proportioned - and adjusted - so as to be continuously rotating at half speed, of the motor, being provided by a suitable gear - of one of the crank shafts 12 @of the motor.
In one embodiment provided with the device shown in FIG. 2, the position of the distributor 8, relative to the exhaust ports 6 - of the cylinder - of the engine, is adjustable in order to make it possible to obtain variable compression volumes in said cylinder.
As seen in this figure, a shaft 20 of short length, on which is fixed the chain wheel 17, forming a part of the transmission which ensures the rotation of the distributor 8 by means of the crank shaft. main 13 of the motor, is placed in alignment with the axis 214u distributor 8, and a sleeve 22 is -mounted on the adjoining part of the axes 20 and 21.
This sleeve 22 is provided -in its center -de two flanges 23, -disposed to cooperate with a pin 24 fixed on a lever pi voted 25 and is provided on the opposite sides of said edges 23, -two grooves; a rib 27, fixed horizontally on the shaft 21 of the distributor, engages in one of these grooves 26, and a rib 29, fixed on the shaft 20, inclined to the horizontal, engages in the other groove 28.
According to the preceding description and from FIG. 2, it is easily seen that the movement of the pivoted lever 25 to one side or the other from its neutral central position results in the movement of the -distributor 8 in the forward or backward direction.
As will easily be understood, instead of a single dispenser arranged to operate as described above, one could have several similar dispensers animated with a rotational movement.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the piston 4 of the air pump 3 of the engine is actuated from the main crank shaft 13 of the engine by means of two connecting rods 30.
and eccentrics 31, an eccentric being placed on each side of the crank of the shaft, crank 13 of the motor and the eccentrics 31 being placed, relative to said crank shaft, so that the air is sent by the piston 4 of the air pump 3 of the cylinder 1 - of the engine while the air intake holes 5 of the cylinder 1 are uncovered by the piston 2 - of the cylinder 1 - of the engine, tan say that the air is sucked in,
of the atmosphere in the cylinder of the air pump through a series of independent valves 32, placed around the upper part of the cylinder of the air pump 3.
The engine is provided with an auxiliary valve 33, by which an additional quantity of air is supplied to cylinder 1 of the engine after the air intake holes 5 of the latter have been -covered by the piston 2 of the cylinder 1 of the engine, said additional air passing into the cylinder 1 through an orifice 34, located above the main air intake ports 5.
Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 relate to two embodiments in the form of motors of the piston type in opposition. Each of these engines comprises an engine cylinder 35, which is open at both ends, two pistons, 36 and 37, acting in this cylinder 35, and an annular air pump 38, which surrounds the lower end. cylinder 35 and is similar in all respects to the air pump described above for single piston engines.
The engine cylinder 35 is provided, at a distance from its upper end, with exhaust ports 39, arranged to cooperate with the upper piston 36 of the engine and, at .distance from its lower end. higher, air intake ports 40, which communicate directly with the upper end of the cylinder of the air pump 38, and which are controlled by the lower piston 37 of the engine.
The lower piston 37, as usual in this type of engine, is connected by a rod 41 to the central crank of a three-crank shaft 42, which is the main crankshaft of the engine, while that the upper piston 36 is connected to the other two outer cranks of this crank shaft, by means of an appropriate mechanism, consisting of rods 43 of short length which are connected at their lower ends,
to said outer cranks d2 the crankshaft 42 and, at their upper ends to guide sliders 44, and to vertical rods 45 which are connected at their lower ends to sliders 44 and which, after passing through tubes 46 placed in the air pump 38, are.
connected, at their upper ends, to a head cross member 47 which is fixed to the upper piston 36 of the engine, for example as shown, pivotally mounted at its center on said piston.
In these two engines, the control of the time spaces during which the exhaust ports 39 and the intake ports 40 of the cylinder 35 of the engine are open and closed is determined by adjusting the advance of the side cranks of the engine. crankshaft 42 of the engine on the central crank of the crankshaft, so, as in the case of a single piston engine,
giving sufficient time to allow the exhaust pressure in the cylinder 35 of the engine to drop to the desired value before the air intake ports 40 of the cylinder are exposed by the lower piston 37 and to cover the exhaust ports 39 at the desired time, before the inlet ports 40 are covered by the lower piston 37 and, in a particular embodiment, so that the two sets of ports are covered at the same moment, of the -compression stroke.
In the engine of fig. 5 and 6, the air, as in the case of a single piston engine (fig. 1), is introduced into the engine through orifices 48, located: in the outer frame 49 of the engine and communicating with the atmosphere @ at their outer ends.
These orifices 48 are opened and closed at the desired times by means of a reciprocating sleeve 50, disposed concentrically with the lower part of the cylinder 35 of the engine, while this sleeve 50 and the piston 51 of the pump. air are driven by means of rods 52 and 53, connected to the sleeve and piston and cranks of an auxiliary crankshaft 54, actuated by the main crankshaft of the engine.
In the engine shown in fig. 7 and 8, air, as in the case of a single piston engine (Figs. 3 and 4), is introduced to the upper part of the cylinder. Of the air pump 38, of the engine, through a. series -of 55 independent inlet valves, placed around -the upper part of the air pump,
while the piston 51 of the air pump 38 is actuated by means of rods 56 which are connected to the piston 51 and to arms '57 which are themselves fixed to oscillating ar bers 58, the necessary movements being printed to the oscillating shafts 58 by means of additional arms 59 (fig. 9) fixed to the oscillating shafts 58 and to flanges 60 which are connected, on the one hand,
to additional shafts 5'9 and, on the other hand, to a 4th head traverse 61, placed on the lower end of a hollow piston 62. The latter is arranged to move in a cylindrical guide 63 and is operated from the crankshaft @ of the motor by means of an eccentric 64 and an eccentric rod 65.
In the embodiments shown in FIGS. 10, 11, 12 and 13, the air pump -consist of a rectangular chamber 66, provided with a rectangular piston 67, pierced with a central cylindrical hole 68, arranged to move on the lower part of the cylinder dre 69 of the engine.
In these engines, the means for admitting air into the upper end of the chamber 66 of the air pump and the means for actuating the piston 67 from the main crankshaft of the engine. are such that the air is admitted to the air pump in due time and that the mechanism by means of which the piston 67 is alternately moved allows the movements of this piston to be regulated with respect to the piston of the motor associated with the pump air.
In the engine shown in fig. 10 and 11, the air inlet into chamber 66 of the air pump is controlled by means of sliders 70.
Sliders 70 and piston 67 are alternately driven by means of rods 71 and 72, connected to auxiliary crank shafts 73 which are connected to the main motor level shaft. In the engine shown in fig. 12 and 13, the air which is to be used in the air pump is drawn from a chamber 74, which is placed below the air pump and is separated from the crankcase 75 of the engine by a transverse partition 76,
the necessary quantity of air being extracted from the chamber 74 during the downstroke, from the piston 67 to pass into the upper part of the chamber 66 of the air pump through grooves 77 drilled in the head of the piston -67 -and through corresponding grooves 78, drilled in two plates 79, which are mounted, cuulisse- ment on the head of the piston 67.
The necessary movements are imparted to the grooved plates 79 and to the piston 67 by a mechanism which consists, as shown, of rods 80 which are connected to crank shafts 81, controlled by the main crank of the engine and are connected, by through their ends, to the piston 67.
The upper ends of the rods 80 are connected to short connecting rods 82, which are connected to. , projecting supports 83 fixed to the grooved plates 79 and passing through grooves 84 drilled in the piston head 67.
The: cylinders and rectangular pistons which comprise these last two embodiments present an advantage when it is necessary to take into -consideration the external dimensions. They could also be used in the case of single piston engines.
In other embodiments, to replace the described distributor, the cylinder of the single piston engine may be provided with a series of air intake and exhaust ports placed side by side. - above - others and extending around - the whole of the upper part of the cylinder - of the engine and the communication between the exhaust ports of the cylinder and the exhaust port of the engine is established or cut off on time,
by means of a sheath surrounding the exhaust ports and acting in combination with them. The necessary movements of the sleeve are controlled by a mechanism driven by the main crank shaft of the engine and a device is provided allowing the relative position of the sleeve to be adjusted with respect to the exhaust ports and - piston -of the engine, so as to obtain variable compression volumes in the engine cylinder.
The sleeve employed to -control the admission of air into the cylinder of the engine's air pump, instead of being moved alternately in the vertical direction, as: above described, may be, in a variant, driven by an alternating rotational movement.
It is of course -that the .motor, instead of being provided with a single cylinder, can include several, the motor can also be of a type other than vertical.
