Process for the production of white, gas-clouded enamels. The invention relates to the manufacture of white-clouded enamels, in particular iron enamels, gas opacifiers being used in conjunction with enamel frits which are in a colloidal state in the slip.
When using such frits, the disadvantage sometimes arises that the enamel gets a veil when it is burned in. becomes dull.
The invention is based on the finding that this deficiency can be avoided by reducing the influence of the water binding of the clay favoring substances that are present in the enamel slip on the clay without affecting the adsorption capacity of the clay pregnant.
According to the invention, using enamel frits and gas opacifiers in the slip in colloidal state, substances are also used which bring about an at least partial conversion of the compounds which go into solution during the preparation of the slip from the frit and promote the water binding of the clay used. Such compounds promoting the water retention of the clay are in particular alkaline salts, such as. B.
Soda, borax and the like, which are converted by the substances passing over into the slip, evidently with the formation of substances which have a weaker effect on the clay, without impairing the adsorption capacity of the clay.
For the method according to the invention in particular hydrochloric acid respectively. Hydrochloric acid releasing substances, preferably hydrochloric acid salts with volatile bases, are suitable. An example of a substance that is extremely effective is ammonium chloride, which is effective even in very small amounts.
The addition of ammonium chloride is expedient in amounts of 1 /, - per mille to 2 per mille calculated on the enamel frit or. Instead of ammonium chloride, the amount of hydrochloric acid corresponding to such an amount of ammonium chloride, ammonium chloride being preferred to the use of hydrochloric acid.
The substances causing the reaction can already be added to the mill during the manufacture of the slip.
When executing the method according to the invention, use is made in particular of frits in which the required colloidal properties are achieved by chemical or colloid-chemical measures even with normal grinding on normal enamel mills. This results in enamel sets that have twice the usual fluorine content of normal enamel sets (that is about 5% fluorine-containing enamel sets), e.g.
B. 10% fluorine and also more, not counting the fluorine content of any cryolite used, contain this property, the fluorine-containing substances being particularly the addition of a fluoroalkali compound, in particular of kieselfluoroalkali, such. B. silica fluorosodium alone or in combination with clay, feldspar or the like has been proven.
Such frits can also be obtained by using an enamel set with a normal fluorine content introduced in the form of a fluoroalkali compound, in particular a silicofluoroalkali compound, but the ratio of alkali to boric acid is considerably higher than in the usual enamel sets. This can be achieved by reducing the boron content or by increasing the alkali content, but expediently by combining both measures, that is to say both a reduction in the boron content and an increase in the alkali content.
Here, the larger amount of alkali can be introduced in the form of all alkali-containing raw materials used for the enamel, for example as soda, field spat and the like. In the case of the enamel sets that are mostly used, the ratio of alkali to boric acid can be assumed to be on average approximately 1/2 part of alkali to 1 part of boric acid. The ratio of alkali to boric acid can approach this lowest limit, the lower the absolute boric acid content of the frit. Those enamel sets in which the ratio of alkali to boric acid is above 2: 1, such as e.g. B.
3: 1 to 5: 1, the alkali content of an optionally added alkali-containing fluorine compound not being included in the calculation.
It is also useful, the aluminum content, so z. B. to increase the addition of clay, field late or the like to the raw mix. Examples: 1. 1000 gr of a colloidal frit, 100 gr clay, 0.25 gr methylene blue as opacifier, 0.4 gr saltpeter are ground on the mill with the addition of 1 gr ammon chloride with about 450 gr water, whereby by the addition of Ammonium chloride dissolved out of the frit during the production of the slip,
the water binding of the clay favoring alkaline salts, like in particular soda, borax, are implemented.
Instead of ammonium chloride, 2 1/2 cm3 technical hydrochloric acid (30%) can be used. 2. 1000 grams of a colloidal frit, 100 grams of clay, 0.5 grams of tar (dry), 0.4 grams of saltpeter are ground on the mill with the addition of 1 gram of ammonium chloride with approximately 450 grams of water.
Example of a frit made colloidal by adding fluorine to the enamel mixture The following enamel mixture is fritted: Borax approx. 20-24.6 gr, soda 3.2 gr, saltpeter 4.2 gr, calcite 1.6 gr, silica fluorine sodium 20-24 gr, Feldspar 2.1.6 gr, kaolin 2.1 gr, quartz 25.7 gr.
Example of an enamel set in which the ratio of alkali to boric acid is greater than that of normal enamel sets Borax 15 gr, feldspar 34 gr, quartz 20 gr, silica fluorosodium 12 gr, fluorspar 2.1 gr, soda 20.8 gr, saltpeter 3 gr , Kaolin 6.2 gr.
