Process for the continuous] preparation of metallic magnesium by thermal reduction of raw materials containing magnesia. The representation of metallic magnesium by thermal reduction of magnesia resp. Magnesia-containing raw materials with the help of silicon in the flow of an indif ferent gas and subsequent precipitation of the magnesium vapor in solid or liquid form is known.
It is advisable to volatilize the magnesium at the lowest possible temperatures, since the loss-free precipitation of the magnesium vapors takes place more quickly, the higher the temperature of these vapors.
This fact creates difficulties in: the transfer of the process from the laboratory scale to practical operation, since with the latter a continuous implementation of the process, that is to say the formation of a slag residue that can be removed in liquid form, i.e. a slightly liquid slag residue, is desirable.
If silicon is used as the only reducing agent, however, slag with a high melting point is produced, even if, as already. was proposed to use dolomite as the starting material containing magnesia.
For the purpose of lowering the melting point of the slag produced, it is also proposed. Instead of silicon alone, a mixture of silicon and aluminum was used as the reducing agent, with a view to the fact that the slag produced in this way, which belongs to the three-component system Ca0-A1203-Si02, has a lower melting point.
The present invention is based on the surprising finding that the formation of a molten slag is not a necessary prerequisite for carrying out a continuous production of magnesium by thermal reduction on a larger scale, so that it is much more possible, the reduction to be carried out using a rotary kiln,
from -the reaction residues can be continuously discharged in solid form.
The present process is characterized in that the thermal reduction of the magnesia-containing raw material below the melting point of the reaction residue takes place in a rotary kiln.
The use of the rotary kiln can ensure that there is an even temperature distribution in the product to be reduced during the conversion, a fact that also has a positive effect on the evenness of the development of the magnesium vapors.
Furthermore, it is possible to forego the use of the expensive aluminum as a reducing agent and to use silicon as the only reducing agent, since residues consisting only of Ca0 and Si02 have the high melting point aimed for here and no baking properties exhibit. Finally, the use of a rotary kiln offers the very important advantage
.that it allows the process to be carried out continuously with external heating.
As a reducing agent for the magnesia respectively. the magnesia-containing raw materials, for example dolomite, can bezw in addition to silicon. Ferrosilicon, if necessary, also find aluminum or mixtures of the two. The use of certain alloys, essentially aluminum and silicon, is particularly advantageous.
possibly contain in addition to certain amounts of iron, as they arise in the thermal reduction of alumina-containing raw materials, in particular mixtures of kaolin and clay, and their 'use has found considerable difficulties so far.
While some of these alloys, for example those which contain about 70 parts of Al for 30 parts of Si, favor the formation of particularly fluid slags and are therefore less suitable for the present process, the use of these alloys is of particular advantage here which lead to high-melting slugs, whereby the presence of even large amounts of iron does not interfere,
because the temperatures in question here are not sufficient for melting the iron. It is particularly surprising that the reduction in the magrnesia-containing raw materials, even when using these (inherently relatively low-melting) ternary alloys, is so intense that even a temporary melting of the same, which would make the use of a rotary kiln impossible, does not occur .
Examples of such alloys that provide relatively high-melting reaction products are:

In Fig. 1, a is a muffle made of heat-resistant steel, which bil det the reaction chamber and encircles b together with the. Drehbar angeord designated furnace. The muffle could also be rotatably arranged in the stationary furnace. Carefully cleaned and dried hydrogen is passed through the muffle a with a slight excess pressure, entering at c.
A metal wire winding d made of chrome, nickel or molybdenum wire is used to heat the furnace and the annular space e between the heating winding and muffle is designed as a hydrogen jacket. On the side where the hydrogen enters the muffle. there is a filling device f for the reduction mixture, on the other hand there is an outlet g for the reaction residue on the side of the hydrogen outlet. The screw conveyor lt is used for filling, whose funnel, which is always full, also serves as a gas seal.
The condensation of the magnesium vapor arising from the reaction mass to solid metal is effected on the outer surface of a water-filled iron pipe. which protrudes into the i4Zufel from the discharge side.
It is sufficient to design the hydrogen outlet as a residue discharge at the same time. A condensation of the magnesium in the liquid state is, if necessary, for example according to the variant according to FIG. by placing in or on the muffle a an iron pipe h which is heated above the melting temperature of the magnesium and which also serves as a hydrogen outlet. The reaction residue is then discharged into a gas-tight collecting container 1.
