Rotary kiln for the thermal extraction of lliagnesium. For the thermal recovery of magnesium by reducing magnesia-containing raw materials with the aid of silicon, aluminum and similar reducing substances that do not supply gaseous oxidation products, furnaces of the most varied of designs have already been proposed.
However, all these furnace types have the disadvantage that they are not suitable for carrying out the process on a large technical scale, because the special conditions under which the process must be carried out arise when the devices are enlarged make the resulting dimensions more difficult to notice. To carry out the process at atmospheric pressure, i. H. in a hydrogen atmosphere, most materials are no longer able to cope with the stresses occurring at the high reduction temperatures when the dimensions of the furnaces are enlarged.
However, if the process is carried out at correspondingly lower temperatures using a high vacuum, the task is to make the individual parts of the device vacuum-tight and also the raw material mixture to be processed and the solid reaction residues, as well as the metal produced the furnace on resp. out of it or otherwise discharged, which is particularly difficult in terms of equipment when using a rotary oven or the like, the reac tion mixture is to be circulated during the implementation.
From a thermal point of view, an elongated furnace proves to be unfavorable because of the considerable radiation losses. A heating of the reaction mixture by radiant heat, in particular by heat radiation elements angeord designated in the furnace itself, are confronted with considerable structural difficulties in the case of an elongated construction of the furnace. The invention relates to a furnace for the thermal production of magnesium. It can be built in such a way that its performance corresponds to large-scale technical requirements, for example by producing 250 kg of magnesium and more per day.
The furnace according to the invention is characterized by a cylindrical reaction chamber, the diameter of which is at least equal to its length, and which is arranged in the middle of its longitudinal extent, but tangentially, an opening for the supply of the reaction mixture and for the discharge of the solid reaction residues.
In the accompanying drawing, an exemplary embodiment from the furnace is shown.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section and Fig. 2 is a section along line a-a of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, A is a reaction space designed in the form of a horizontal cylinder, the diameter of which is equal to or greater than the length of the cylinder. The reaction space is limited by a ceramic lining B with good thermal insulation. The entry of the reaction mixture and the discharge of the solid reaction residues takes place through a common opening C, which is arranged in the longitudinal center of the reaction space A, but tangential to its circumference and expanded into a funnel-shaped manner towards the interior of the reaction space.
The tangential arrangement of the inlet and outlet opening C has the advantage that the material to be introduced is guided in a steady stream into its normal path movement as it enters the furnace by the rotation of the furnace, an advantage for the exit Carrying of the reaction residue in the opposite sense is also achieved.
As a result of the tangential arrangement of the inlet and outlet openings, compared to a radial arrangement, the result is that their funnel-shaped enlargement is moved deeper into the furnace interior, so that the unbalanced torque of the charging funnel is reduced.
The heating of the reaction material is carried out by the same arranged in the middle of the reaction chamber around the axis, be known heat radiation elements D; This arrangement is possible due to the compact shape of the reaction chamber, which allows the use of only supported at the end faces of the reac tion chamber, but otherwise cantilevered radiation elements, but then also thanks to the tangential supply of the reaction mixture, the latter damaging the heat - makes radiation elements impossible due to the solid reaction mixture supplied.
The magnesium vapors developed during the reaction are discharged in the axis of the furnace through an opening E, which is kept so narrow that it allows the condensation space to be shielded from the reaction space as much as possible. 1) The vapors then pass into the condensation space F of relatively large dimensions, which is designed as a cylinder which is arranged in the axis of the furnace and can be cooled and heated. At its end facing away from the reaction chamber, the condensation chamber has a tapping opening G and furthermore, also in an axial arrangement, a vacuum connection H.
As a material for the condensation chamber, ceramic material is out of the question because of the risk of a reaction of the generated magnesium with the constituents of the same, as well as because of the risk of joint destruction by the hot magnesium. If only metal remains as the material for this, then this must meet the requirement that it is vacuum-sealed and also hydrogen-tight at the temperatures in question and is not attacked by molten magnesium. For the latter reason, the nickel-containing iron alloys, otherwise known to be heat-resistant, are ruled out from the start.
Most of the remaining heat-resistant alloys, however, are not hydrogen or hydrogen. vacuum tight.
However, it has been found that iron-chromium alloys with about 5 to 30%, preferably about 6 to 8% chromium, which optionally also contain silicon in quantities of 0.5 to 10% and respectively to reduce scaling. or aluminum in amounts of 0,
7 to 2%, the requirements here are fully up to.
The condensation of the magnesium vapors is preferably carried out by appropriate cooling of the walls of the condensation room, whereupon the condensation chamber is heated to above the melting point of the magnesium while the furnace is at a standstill, for the purpose of emptying and filling, with the supply of hydrogen through the vacuum connection H, so that the Magnesium can be tapped in liquid form. For the purpose of heating the condensation space, it is surrounded by a heating coil J. He also wears a hood to reduce the Wärmeaus radiation .K, which is provided with air flaps L to achieve a faster cooling effect in the condensation stage.
