Fi-. 1 est une -coupe longitudinale d'une première forme d'exécution; Fig. 22 est une coupe transversale suivant la ligne 2-2 de fig. 1; Fi-. 3 est un plan du distributeur tour- rani que comprend ce moteur; Fig. 4 est un détail vu par-dessous; Fig. 5 est un autre détail vu par-dessous; Fig. 6 est une élévation suivant la ligne 6-6 de la fig. 5; Fig. 7 est une coupe longitudinale par tielle d'une deuxième forme d'exécution;
Lrne ouverture longitudinale 52 (fig.
Internal combustion engine with rotating distributor. The present invention relates to an internal combustion engine with a rotary distributor. This engine is characterized in that it comprises a cylinder block @, in which is mounted at least one cylinder, as in. be able to slide in the block, the motor further comprising a distribution box.
in which is mounted the rotary distributor intended, on the one hand, to regulate the admission of the explosive mixture to the cylinders and, on the other hand, to allow the evacuation of the exhaust gases from the latter, this distributor being protected internally and externally by a cooling jacket, and having multiple ports, this distributor being controlled so as to rotate at a relatively low speed with respect to the speed of the crankshaft and being in contact with seats provided with orifices through which it is in communication with the sliding cylinders which, under the action of an elastic means, are pushed towards the distributor, in order to keep said seats in contact with the rotating distributor.
The appended drawings represent, by way of example, several embodiments of the engine according to the invention.
Fi-. 1 is a longitudinal section of a first embodiment; Fig. 22 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1; Fi-. 3 is a plan of the touran distributor included in this motor; Fig. 4 is a detail seen from below; Fig. 5 is another detail seen from below; Fig. 6 is an elevation taken along line 6-6 of FIG. 5; Fig. 7 is a partial longitudinal section of a second embodiment;
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of a third form of execution which is a single-cylinder engine; Fig. 9 is a cross section of an alternative dispenser; Fig. 10 is a longitudinal section of a fourth embodiment.
As seen in fig. 1, 1 denotes the cylinders; 2, the pistons; 3, the cylinder block; 4, the housing; 5, the crankshaft and 6, the connecting rods of an internal combustion engine. The cylinders 1 are formed by the interior of movable sleeves 7 adapting so as to be able to slide in cylindrical guides 8 formed in the block 3.
A cylindrical distributor box 9 is formed partly in the block and, in part, inside a removable cover 10 fixed to said box pal of the bolts 11 (fig. 2). This distributor box could, in another embodiment, be integral with the cylinder block 3.
In the distributor box 9 there is rotatably mounted a cylindrical distributor sleeve 12 with which the segment shaped seats 13 (fig. 2) come into contact, formed on the covers 14 of the sleeves. 7. The seats 13 are kept in contact with the distributor sleeve 12 by springs 15 mounted on the pins 16 which screw into the housing 4.
The springs 15 press the pressure plates 18 into contact with the sleeves 7 and urge them from bottom to top to bring them into contact with the distribution sleeve 12, the springs being placed between the plates 18 and adjustable nuts 17 To accommodate the pressure plates 18, the sleeves 7 in question are notched at 19 (Fig. 4) and include collars 20 giving said plates an increased contact surface.
In the lids 14 of the sleeves are formed openings 21 allowing the admission of the explosive mixture to the cylinders 1 and the exit of the exhaust gases from these cylinders.
The sleeves 7 may be separate and be pushed against the distributor sleeve 12 individually, as is the case -in the embodiment -of FIG. 8, or in pairs, as shown in fig. 1, or in groups of larger numbers. In the embodiment of FIG. 10, said sleeves are integral together and these joined sleeves are kept in contact with the distributor sleeve 12 by springs 15 and pressure plates 18.
When the sleeves 7 are made in one piece or form a unit, the cylinder block 1 has the desired shape to correspond to said sleeves and is adapted to them by allowing their sliding.
The collars 20 mounted on the sleeves could be omitted to allow these sleeves to be removed from the bottom up from the guides 8, after the cover 10 and the distributor sleeve 12 have been removed.
The distributor sleeve 12 has concentric inner and outer walls 22 and 23 between which there is an annular chamber 24 which extends above all of the cylinders 1.
The annular chamber 24 is constantly associated with the arrival of explosive mixture by a peripheral slit 25 formed in the wall 23, which extends all around the sleeve 12 and is located in the alignment of a step wise. intake 26 formed. in block 3 and in communication with a carburetor (not shown) or other source of explosive mixture.
The distributor sleeve l'2, which is shown in figs. 1 and 3, has a central inlet slot 25, but this slot 25 and the inlet passage 26 could be placed in another way and two or more of these slots, in a wise alignment. appropriate inlet 26, could be provided, if necessary, to equalize the mixture distribution to all cylinders 1.
In the embodiments of FIGS. 7 and 8, the slot or slots 25 are eliminated and the passage: intake 26 is placed centrally at one end of the distributor box 9 and formed in a cover 9a fixed on said chamber 9. The chamber annu air 24 is open, at the end adjacent to passage 26, and is constantly associated with said passage.
As seen in fig. 1, 2 and 3, a pair of facing inlet ports 27 are formed in the outer wall 23 of the annular chamber 24. Across said chamber, between the outer side and the inner side of the distributor sleeve. 12, there are exhaust openings facing each other 28, formed in the partition walls 28a and opening into an exhaust chamber 29 which is located inside said sleeve 12. The annular chamber 24 is reinforced, between the inlet ports 27 and the exhaust ports 28, by ribs 30 integral with it.
The sleeve 12 receives its control from the crankshaft 5 by a transmission comprising a pinion 31 fixed to the crankshaft 5 and re linked, by a chain 32, to a pinion 33 wedged on a sleeve 34, which is mounted on a spindle 35 and carries a toothed wheel -36 generating with a toothed wheel 37 wedged on the sleeve 12. Other control members could connect the crankshaft 5 to the sleeve 12. Thus, for example, one could use a vertical shaft bearing to its opposite ends - angle wheels or helical wheels meshing with similar wheels mounted on the crankshaft 5 and the sleeve 12.
The distributor sleeve 12 rotates in the opposite direction of the crankshaft 5 (fi--. 2), but with other forms of transmission, the crankshaft 5 and the sleeve 12 can rotate in the same direction.
When the distributor sleeve 12 rotates, the intake ports 27 and the exhaust ports 2.8 corresponding to a cylinder pass alternately over the light 21 of this cylinder (FIG. 2). The ports 27 communicate the cylinder 1 with the annular chamber 24, the peripheral slot 2.5 and the inlet passage 26 and, by this means, with the source of explosive mixture, while the exhaust ports 28, by passing over the port 21, make the cylinder 1 communicate with the exhaust chamber 29.
Each supported part of the outer wall 23, with the inlet port 27 and the exhaust port 28 provided on its opposite sides, forms a control section of the distributor sleeve 12 corresponding to a complete cycle of the valve. piston 2 which, as usual, is carried out in two turns of the crankshaft 5.
When the entry edge 38 of each intake port 27 clears the port 21 (Fig. 2), the piston 2 begins one cycle, so that two cycles, corresponding to four revolutions of the crankshaft. 5, are performed at each turn of the distributor sleeve 12. Accordingly, the sleeve. 12 can rotate at a quarter of the speed of the crankshaft 5 and the transmission mechanism (i.e. chain 32, chain wheels 31 and 33 and cogwheels 36 and 37) can be set so as to give a. plication in the proportion of four to one.
Similar intake ports 27 and exhaust ports 28 are formed, for each of the cylinders 1, in appropriate positions in the sleeve 12 (Fig. 3). The inlet ports 27, the exhaust ports 28 and the propped portions of the distributor sleeve 12 are arranged in pairs facing each other, thus allowing said sleeve to be balanced.
In some cases, three intake ports 27 and three exhaust ports 28 may be provided and the transmission mechanism may be established to actuate said sleeve at one-sixth of the speed of the crankshaft quin. The sleeve 12 can even rotate more slowly and can have four intake ports 27 and four exhaust ports 28 (Fig. 9); the transmission mechanism can then be established so as to rotate said sleeve at eighth the speed of the crankshaft 5.
The transmission is therefore established so as to rotate the distributor sleeve, relative to the crankshaft, at a speed which is inversely proportional to the total number of intake and exhaust ports relating to a cylinder.
In fig. 1,. The pistons. 2 occupy positions corresponding to the beginning of a complete engine cycle. The piston 2, at the left-hand end of the engine, occupies the explosion position and the slot 21 is masked by the supported part of the sleeve 12, which can withstand, without deforming, the increased upward thrust of the sleeve 7, which occurs at the time of ignition. The adjoining piston 2 begins its exhaust stroke to expel the waste gases through the ports 21 and 28 into the exhaust chamber 29.
The piston 2 which comes immediately after, begins its -compression stroke, the intake port 27 being still open, but about to close. The piston 2, at the right end, begins its suction stroke, the ports 21 and 27, in alignment with each other, making the corresponding cylinder communicate with the chamber 24.
The distributor sleeve 12 is provided internally and externally with cooling jackets. The block 3 has a water cooling space 39 which also surrounds the lower half of the distributor box 9. The water enters the space 39 through an inlet port 40 (Fig. 2), rises in this space and passes, through orifices 41 and 42, into a jacket 43 formed in the cover 10 and surrounding the upper half of the chamber 9.
It follows that the box is surrounded by an abundant amount of water. which ensures that the rotating wall 23 is kept cool and that its lubrication is maintained in an efficient manner.
The inner wall 22 is protected against the exhaust gases by a cooling jacket 44, preferably of thin sheet metal, which is fixed, in the longitudinal direction, in the exhaust chamber 29. This cooling jacket extends along said man chon, very close to the wall 22, but without coming into contact with it.
The longitudinal opening 52 (fig. 5) is made in the cooling jacket 44 above the ports 21 of the sleeves 7 and the exhaust gases exit through the exhaust ports 28 and from there. , through the opening 52, into a tube 45 and an exhaust pipe 5.3.
The portion of the jacket 44 which is remote from the manifold 47 comprises a water chamber 54, the end of which can be closed in various ways. Figs. 1 and 6 show a spider 55 connected, by autogenous welding for example, to the tube 46, the end of which fits into a cover 56. A plate 57, closing the water chamber 54, s' Also fits in the cover 56 e1 a gasket 58 is introduced between the plate 57 and the tube 46.
A pin 59, placed in the central hub 60 of the cross member 50, passes through the plate 57 and carries a nut 61 at the hub of which said plate is held in position and is clamped on the gasket 58. An outlet pipe 62, which leaves -from the plate 57, conducts the heated water from the chamber 51 to a radiator or other cooling device. In the embodiment of FIG. 7, the tube 46 engages in an annular groove 9b of the cover 9a and the gasket 58 is inserted between said tube and the bottom of said groove.
A passage 9c is made: in the cover 9a and communicates with the wise output pitch 62 -which is .ménagé on the removable cover 10 of the distributor box 9. In the single-cylinder engine represented at the fi. 8, the water chamber 54 is closed by a plate 46a integral with the tube 46 and a passage 47a is formed in the collector 47 and is connected, by a passage 10a, to the water outlet 62.
To ignite the mixture. explosive, spark plugs 63 are provided in -combustion chambers 64, at the inner ends of the cylinder sleeves 7. Elongated openings 65 (Fig. 2) are provided in the cylinder block 3 to allow the spark plugs 63 to screw. .in said sleeves and ensure free spaces or games to allow .mouvement sliding said sleeves.
In the embodiment of fig. 7, the positive lubrication of the distributor sleeve 12 is provided by a longitudinal groove 66 formed in the removable cover 10 and closed by a plate 67 comprising a seat 68, -in which is formed an orifice 69, A tubular flange 70 is fixed to the seat 68. and communicates by a pipe (not shown) with a lubricating pump. Oil supplied by the pump passes through the orifice 69 into the groove 66 and, from there, through the holes 71, into the inner wall 10b of the removable cover 10 to lower the rotating sleeve 12.
As the distributor sleeve 12 is kept in intimate contact with the internal wall lûb by the thrust exerted from the bottom up by the springs 15 on the sleeves 7, only the quantity of oil which emerges from the holes 71. is sufficient to maintain a film of oil between the periphery of said sleeve 12 and said inner wall.
In the embodiments shown, the rotating distributor sleeve 12 is balanced and is quiet in operation; it is effectively cooled externally by the water chamber 39 and the insert 43, and internally by the cooling jacket 44 as well as by the cooling effect of the incoming mixture. The lubrication of said sleeve is thus effectively maintained. Further, the distributor sleeve 12 ensures free escape, and the efficient cooling as well as the comparatively slow speed of said sleeve prevents wear and eliminates jamming.
