Les. dispositifs décrits présentent de. grands avantages comparativement aux dis positifs -de transmission connus comportant des câbles dont la surface présente un enrou lement de fil -de -diamètre constant en spires serrées, notamment par suite de la réduction .de la. surface de contact frottant entre le câ ble flexible et son guide;

In all these figures, the homologated parts are designated by the same references.
To the fi-. 1 and 2, the flexible cable intended to be housed at. the interior of a tube or other guide element is constituted by a flexible core, formed of a bundle of central wires 1, torches. following an elongated pitch, and over which is wound the intermediate layer 2 of son following a helix -of smaller pitch :. The cable additionally includes a layer of 3, 3x outer wires. All these wires are of circular section.
The intermediate layer 2 is made of several threads wound in people opposite to the direction of twist of the threads of the core 1, and the outer layer 3, 3x is made of several threads wound under a very high tension in the opposite direction to that: threads of the middle layer.
One of the 3-z wires constituting the outer layer is larger in diameter than the other 3 'wires of this outer layer, so that this 3x large wire determines the formation of a protruding helix hereinafter referred to as , net, and overflowing the smaller threads 3 of the outer layer, and yet concentric with the core. The smallest wires 3 are used to brace the turns of the coarse wire 3x and to keep it in position on the core 1-2. The screw thus formed is flexible in all directions.
In the example shown, the outer layer is formed of three wires of small relative diameter and one wire of large relative diameter. The screw pitch is equal to the sum of the diameters of the four wires constituting the outer layer. The helical groove formed between the turns. larger wire provides a lubrication channel.
In fig. 1 and 2, the cable has been shown schematically: as constituted by a: central bundle of wires 1, covered with two layers 2 on which the outer layer of wires 3, 3x is wound; but it is obvious that there can be only one or more than two intermediate layers 2 or else that in certain cases the layer 2 can: disappear, the. layer 3, 3x being wound directly on the central layer 1.
In fig. 3, 4 and 5, the cable is formed by a flexible core 1-2 of circular section wires and an outer layer 3, 3x constituted by the winding of five rectangular section wires. The four threads 3 serving as bracing are thinner than the fourth thread 3x determining the formation of a protruding thread.
The flexible cable is used here to remotely determine a positive and negative translation movement as well as a rotational movement; for this purpose, it is enclosed in a metal guide tube 5 with an internal diameter such that the larger 3x wire of this cable adjusts to it with gentle friction. At each of the goose points - must be transmitted a rotational movement, the tube is pierced with a window 6 and the teeth 7: of a toothed pinion 8 mounted on an axis 9 pass through this window to engage with the net projecting.
There may be: two or more feet: toothed 8 in engagement with the protruding thread. The teeth of these toothed pinions are cut helically - so as to ensure perfect meshing. By the longitudinal displacement .du flexible cable whose threads play the role of: teeth of a rack, the toothed pinions are rotated. At the end of the cable, the tube 5 is crimped at 10 in a fixed connector 11.
A rod 12, provided with a control wheel 13. is attached to one end of the cables to cause longitudinal displacement. The rod 12 can slide into and rotate in a guide 14 of the fitting, and passes through a clamp 15 which can slide smooth, but not rotate in the fitting.
The tightening @de the clamp 1â prevents the rotation of the cable, but leaves the fa culty of longitudinal movement, while the loosening of the clamp allows rotation.
When the clamp is tight, the cable can move longitudinally under the effect of a push or a pull exerted on the mo lette 13, which makes it possible to turn the two toothed wheels. Conversely, the cable can be -moved longitudinally under the effect of the rotation by hand -of one or the other of the toothed wheels, which so simultaneously determines the rotation -of the other wheel. When the clamp is loosened, on the other hand, the cable can rotate as well as move longitudinally.
The flexible cable may be arranged in a guide tube so that when pushed or pulled its protruding thread turns a toothed wheel or displaces a slider and when it is rotated while being held against it. any longi tudinal displacement, one can adjust with precision the position of a toothed wheel or any other movable member.
The cable. flexible. of the device shown in FIG. 6 consists of a flexible core 1-2 formed of son of circular section and coated with an outer layer formed by winding five son of circular section, four of which, designated by the reference 3 serve as bracing, -car they are smaller in diameter than the fifth wire 3x forming a protruding net.
The cable is enclosed in a guide tube 5 and the device is arranged so that this cable can be actuated by an intermediate point between its ends. The tube is pierced with a slot 6 and a small tubular slider 16 is placed on the tube. A threaded lug 17 integral with the slide passes through the slot and comes to rest against the projecting thread. The whole of the slide, acting as a nut, can be considered either as a control member or as a member controlled by. distance.
By moving the slider along the tube, the cable is moved longitudinally: on the other hand, if the cable is moved longitudinally or if it is rotated - without moving it longitudinally, the slider is moved along the tube .
The constituent wires of the outer layer -du cable may be of circular, rectangular or other section; the protruding thread can be formed by several contiguous threads of greater diameter.
The flexible cable shown in fig. 7 is constituted by a flexible core 1-2, formed of son of circular section, covered. of a layer formed by winding .de six circular section wires, four of these wires, designated by 3, of smaller diameter than the other two, serving as a bracing for the protruding net formed by the two adjacent wires 3x. The cable thus formed is enclosed in a guide tube 5.
To brace the turns of the wire forming the protruding net, it is possible, instead of wires of smaller diameter, to use a metal ru ban.
The cable shown in fig. 8 consists of a flexible core 1-2, formed by a bundle of wires of circular section and by a spacer 3 made of a blade. of flat metal and separating the turns of a 3x helix made of a wire of circular section and determining the. formation of a protruding net. The metal blade is used to maintain the spacing of the turns of the propeller 3x. The cable thus formed is enclosed in a guide tube 5.
The flexible cable shown in fig. 9 is constituted by a flexible core of layers of turns 1--2, a helix 3 and a protruding thread 3x (as in fig. 8) and it is also enclosed in a guide tube 5 which presents a solution of continuity in some intermediate point between its ends, and where the command is made: A handle in the form of a nut 18 is housed concentrically to the tube forming a bridge between the neighboring ends of the tube and surrounding the cable. The thread of this nut bites on the protruding thread 3x, so that any rotation of the nut has the effect of imparting a lon @ itndüial movement to the cable.
According to a variant, the nut can be replaced by a rotating collar, collar having a lug or a threaded rod 17 (as in FIG. 6) cooperating with the projecting thread.
The flexible cable included in the device shown in fig. 10 and 11 is constituted by a flexible core 1-2 a spacer member 3 wound in a helix and a protruding thread 3x (as in fig. 8). This cable is enclosed in a guide tube 5 and it is combined with means allowing it to be moved longitudinally or rota.ti- tely from an intermediate point. The tube 5 has a solution of continuity at the control point, its opposite ends being hand held in a fixed clamp or yoke 19.
A sleeve 20, filling this continuity solution is mounted by its two ends in the branches; of the caliper, so as to be able to rotate on its longitudinal axis. The cable passes through this sleeve where it can be immobilized between a radial rib 21 of a small handle or tubular slider 22 surrounding the sleeve and another radial rib 23, diametrically opposed to the first which can be applied or released by means of an adjusting screw 24. The ribs @de:
Enrage 21, 23 pass through grooves 25,? 6 arranged along the sleeve 20, so that by giving the handle 22 a reciprocating movement, the transmission member is imparted a long displacement - nal. Against the sleeve bear the two branches 27, 28 of a stirrup which can be applied against the xpanchon by means of a tightening screw 29 and a wheel 30 to prevent any longitudinal displacement. Under these conditions, by rotating the handle 22, the parts jammed with the rotating sleeve and consequently the cable are rotated.
Instead of being of circular section, the cable can be of any other section appropriate to the role it must fulfill.
The cable shown in fi-. 12 and 13 consists of a flexible core formed of son 1 on which is wound a layer of intermediate turns 2 of son of circular section. This cable also includes spacer wires 3 of circular section and a. 3x protruding propeller (as in fig. 1 and 2). This embodiment lends itself to meshing with toothed wheels.
In fig. 14 and 15 the cable is formed by a flexible core 1 and an intermediate layer of turns 2 formed of circular section wires and of an outer layer 3 formed of square section wires, the turns of which are all the five turns, extended in a 3X loop shape to determine the formation of protruding teeth along one side of this cable. The cable is enclosed in a 5X tube - of oval section.
In fig. 16 and 17, the flexible cable is constituted by two flexible cores of layers 1-2 turns formed of threads of circular section and the threads of the outer layer are looped in $ 3 to form .des regularly spaced teeth. on both sides of the cable. The latter is enclosed in a 5x guide tube in oval section. In this case, the intermediate layer 2 is double.
In fig. 18, the cable consists of a flexible core 1-2 of wires of circular section and of a layer formed by a spacer helix 3 made of a metal blade of curved profile alternating with a 3x helix. . of wire, forming a protruding net (as in fig. 8). The cable is enclosed in a tube 5. The spacer blade has holes for housing, balls 31 ensuring the reach of the cable against the walls of the tube.
In this case, the teeth of the graining wheels or other members cooperating with the protruding net 3x are naturally profiled so as to avoid the balls 31, to allow the movements to be transmitted to be @ lonné to this net $ x . The cable shown in fig. 19. is constituted by a flexible core 1-2 made of wires of circular section and by an outer layer formed by the spacer helices .of two first wires 3, and a helix 3y made of a blade of metal with U-profile, determining the production of the protruding thread.
The 3x propeller has holes serving as housing for the balls 31 serving as a support for the cable in the tube. The helix 3x is wedged by inserting each of its edges between one of the first two wires 3 and one of the other two wires 3 which are located inside the side branches of the U formed by the 3x helix. There are, in all, four sons 3.
Fi nally-. 20, the cable is formed by a flexible core 1-2 of turns of son of circular section and by an outer layer formed by a metal blade forming a spacer coil of a helix -3x -of wire forming a net in protrusion (as in fig. 8). This cable is enclosed in a guide tube 5.
On this tube is passed a sleeve 32 serving to retain in position the balls 33 housed in holes of the tube and projecting inside @ this tube to play the role of the thread of a nut cooperating with the thread 3x of the tube. cable, so that the rotation on itself of this cable determines its Longi tudinal displacement.
In fig. 21, the cable comprises a flexible core formed of twisted son and on which are superimposed two intermediate layers 2 made -de tight turns wound in reverse direction. The cable also includes an outer layer formed of four wires, three of which are used as bracing, are smaller in diameter than the fourth 3x constituting a protruding thread. The cable is enclosed in a tube 5 flared at its end. At its end, this cable is fixed to a cylindrical control insert 34.
This gasket is drilled along its axis, at different diameters to produce shoulders as shown. Layers 2, 3 of the cable are stained in a staircase, the cut ends of each layer coming. wear against the shoulders. The central core 1 is threaded into the terminal trim at the end of which its strands, after having been opened out, are forcibly crimped, .as shown in 37. This method of construction is suitable in the case of where the cable is used to transmit rotational movement.
Radially drilled holes in the end gasket are used for the introduction of solder. In the internal end of the terminal packing is cut a helical groove 36 in which is inserted the 3x projecting thread, because the introduction of the cable into the terminal packing is done by screwing. At the end, the wires forming the central core are welded at 37; part 34 is also thread welded $ 3.
The cable shown in fig. 22 comprises a flexible core -of wires 1, the bracing elements 3 -and a protruding thread. 3x. The cable is enclosed in a tube 5 and at its end is connected to a control trim 38. In this case, the central core 1 alone passes through the perforation of the terminal trim and its constituent wires are also spread out and welded in 3 7. In this variant, the layer 3, 3x is wound directly on the central core 1.
In fig. 23, the cable includes. a flexible 1-2 wire core with a 3 spacer roll and 3x protruding thread. At one of its ends, this cable is fixed to a - control gasket - 39. The central wires 1 are threaded into an axial hole drilled in this gasket which is also pierced with two diametrical holes.
Balls 40 are housed in these holes and a cylindrical sleeve 41 is slipped over the end fitting and forces these balls to bend the central wire 1 to thus secure the end fitting. The sleeve is immobilized between the end of the outer layer of wires 3 which is cut to form a shoulder, and a nut 42 screwed onto the end of the terminal packing.
In fig. 24, the cable comprises a flexible core 1-2 of metal wires and a spacer bearing 3 with a 3x protruding thread. At its end, the cable is attached to a control terminal trim 43. The central wires 1 are threaded through an axial perforation of the terminal trim over a small distance, to be brought into an outer groove to come out,: , the other end of the trim, through a second hole and be folded back as shown.
A cylindrical sleeve 44 is passed over the end packing on which it is immobilized by a screw thread 45. The central wires 1 can be subdued from the end packing before the sleeve is screwed in position.
In fig. 25, the cable comprises a flexible tubular 1-2 core, formed by the helical winding of a metal strip 1 and on which are wound layers of wire 2. This cable further comprises an outer layer of wires 3 with a 3x protruding thread. An axial recess lx therefore exists over the entire length of the core. This hollow core makes it possible to mount the cable on a rigid or flexible rod or on a second transmission member, which allows double control. The second transmission member can be of any type.
We can. accommodate several flexible cables in a common guide tube.
This is what is shown in FIGS. 26 to 28, where three -cables, each composed of a flexible core l-2, a winding -of trestle 3 and a protruding net 3x are housed in a tube 5. At the end -of each of these cables is fixed a handle or control trim 46 guided in an individual housing of a guard plate 17 removably fixed at 48 on a socket 49 which can slide on the end of the tube 5. At the At the other end of each of these cables is attached a terminal gasket 50 passing through an individual guide 51 of a sleeve 52, itself fixed to the tube 5.
The three cables pass through a plug 53 fixed to the sleeve 49 at 54. The sleeve 49 can slide on the tube 5 and is guided by a pin sliding in a groove 55. The three cables mesh with each other by their protruding thread 3x as shown in fig. 26 and 27.
Any one of the transmitting organs can be actuated with respect to the others (by acting on the corresponding member 46) and all three of them can be -moved longitudinally - (by acting on the sleeve 49), hence this results in the possibility of carrying out, with three transmitters, four distinct commands, three of which are independent.
The combination of three cables allows the transmission of greater power than a single member of the same dimensions would allow, and this device formed by the combination: of three cables of standard model, is advantageous compared to a device comprising a single cable of larger dimensions which does not, moreover, offer the benefit of providing four separate controls. The same guide tube can obviously contain more than three cables, seven for example, which can be .de different diameters, the central cable being, for example, stronger than the others.
In fig. 29, the flexible cable to the spacer element 3 and to the projecting thread 3a is contained in a tube closed on itself, -5 going around two toothed wheels 56. This tube is perforated in windows 57 by the which the teeth of the wheels can pass to bite on the protruding net 3x of the cable. The cable thus constitutes a coupling of the two wheels.
The two ends of the cable abut one against the other, but they do not need to be connected, because, whatever the direction in which one of the wheels turns when driving, the two ends of the cable remain contiguous. However, its two ends can be connected to increase the inherent resistance of this cable.
The cable can be arranged in this way to actuate a whole series of successive toothed wheels. In fig. 30, the flexible cable with 3 spacer elements and 3x projecting thread is enclosed in a guide tube 5 tangent to five toothed wheels 58, 59, 60, 61, 62.
At the points of tangency, windows 63 are cut out in the tube to allow the teeth of the wheels to pass through the tube and to mesh with the 3x protruding thread of the transmitter member. At its internal end in the tube, the cable ends in a gap 64, and on the outside it carries a handle 65; in the figure it is shown attacking the first wheel 58. When this cable is pushed back into the tube by exerting a push on the handle, it is first made to turn the wheel 58, then when it reaches the wheel 59, he activates it and so on for the other wheels. When the cable is in contact with all the wheels, it activates them simultaneously.
The 3x protruding net of the cable can be interrupted from distance to distance and present periodic breaches. The cable included in the device of FIG. 30 if it were thus constituted would make it possible to operate the different wheels on an intermittent basis.
In fig. 31, the flexible cable consists of a flexible core of wires 1-2, of circular section, and of an outer layer 3 formed .of five wires. Of which four, serving as bracing, are of circular section more smaller than that of the fourth, 3x, which constitutes the salient helical thread and is of rectangular section. The protruding thread 3x is ground from distance to: distance as in 66, to spare the gaps mentioned in the previous paragraph.
In fig. 32, an endless flexible cable with bracing 3 and projecting thread 3g is closed in a tube 5 and meshes with two toothed wheels 56: wedged on! Fixed axes (as in fig. 29). The protruding thread 3x is ground from distance to distance: as shown at 66 and a contact piece 67 mounted on the tube enters it through a slot 68 to engage with the cable.
In this device, the cable being actuated by the rotation of one of the two toothed wheels: at constant speed, the contact member 67 is actuated intermittently, at intervals of time. long or short, and closes a signaling switch 69.
In fig. 33, an endless cable -with spacer elements 3 and 3x projecting thread is enclosed in an endless tube 5 and meshes with a wheel: d-entry 56 wedged on a fixed axis of rotation. The tube is bent in the form of a cam and is split along its outer generator at 70. A carriage 71 can slide along the tube and engages the cable passing through the slot in the tube.
The carriage carries a running roller 72 which comes to bear against the internal face 73 with an o: it ends a rocking lever 74 which rotates and slides on a fixed axis 75. In this device, the rotation of the wheel 56 actuates the cable and circulate the cart. all along the tube by communicating to the lever 74, which, moreover, is held in position by a return spring or any other elastic member (not shown), a rocking movement depending on the given shape. to the cam.
In fig. 34, a flexible cable with spacer element 3 and protruding thread 3x is enclosed in a tube 5 terminated by a yoke 75. The cable passes: in a sleeve 7-6 where it is fixed by a square end 77 , which allows it to slide longitudinally without turning in the sleeve. This sleeve for its part is mounted between the branches of the yoke, so as to be able to rotate, but it is normally kept stationary by a guillochage 78 of the contact surface between the sleeve and the yoke.
The sleeve is split at 80 to allow the projecting thread 3 to come into engagement with the toothed sector 81 which can rotate on an axis 82, held by flanges integral with the sleeve. In this positive saying, any movement of the cable in the longitudinal direction causes the sector to turn around its axis 82 and any rotation of this cable has the effect of making the sleeve and the sector rotate together around the axis of the man. chon.
This device is suitable for the orientation maneuver. Of the headlights of an automobile, the longitudinal movement: of the cable determining the inclination of the headlights towards the ground. and its rotation, a lateral orientation of the headlights in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the sleeves.
In fig. 35, a first flexible cable with spacer elements 3 and the 3x protruding net is housed in a tube 5, while a second flexible cable with 3 elements and 3x protruding net is contained in another tube 5 arranged. perpendicular to the first. At their point of intersection, the two tubes 5 are split to allow the 3x protruding thread of the first cable to engage with the protruding thread of the second. The first cable is provided with a handle 90 allowing it to be moved longitudinally; the catch of the first cable with the second by their protruding threads causes the second transmitter to move longitudinally.
In fig. 36 and 37, a cable @ with spacer element 3 and projecting thread 3x is contained in a rectilinear tube 5 and provided with a control handle 91; and a flexible endless cable with spacer element 3 and 3x projecting thread is contained in a looped tube 5 and meshes with a star wheel 5.6 wedged on a fixed axle; this second cable is arranged in a plane perpendicular to the rectilinear cable, but is tangent to it. At their point of tangency, the tubes 5 are split, which allows the mutual engagement of the two protruding threads 3x. The longitudi nal displacement of the rectilinear cable has the effect of turning the toothed wheel.
In fig. 38, 39 and 40, a flexible cable comprises a central core made of twisted wires over which is disposed an outer layer made of continuously wound wire between the turns. of which are held projecting discs or continuous rings 92. The construction of this cable is done by threading a disc on the core at regular intervals, during the winding of the wire 3 and every seven turns of the latter for example. . The turns .du wire 3 are used to brace the discs, which are held in place by two successive turns.
In order not to be from one side to the other of a ring 92, the wire 3 must intersect the plane of said ring; it does so by passing over the ring, through one of the four notches 93 that this ring presents. The rotation of the discs on the core is prevented by the passage of the wire 3 in this notch 93 of the disc at the point where the wire intersects the plane of the disc. Instead of being contained in a tube, the cable is suspended by its discs from a guide rod 94 which can be fixed anywhere using eyelets 95 and screws or nails.
The discs are suspended from this rod by the sides 96, dovetail notches 93 embracing the rod.
In fig. 41, a flexible cable consists of a flexible core -de son on which is rolled an outer layer 3 formed by the turns. of a continuous wire enclosing at a distance of 3x protruding loops taking the place of teeth along one side of the cable (as in fig. 14). The cable is fixed by one of its ends to a toothed wheel 9.7 (which can serve as a control member or can be considered as a commanded member) by any appropriate fixing device 98, and embraces the wheel, the 3x loops which engage on lugs 99 arranged on one of the sides of each tooth.
The teeth of the wheel are recessed as shown at 100 to retain the cable and prevent it from moving sideways on the wheel; the two sides of the teeth of the wheel are pinned by the buckles. The purpose of this method of construction is to ensure the maintenance of the cable on da. toothed wheel eliminating the need for a guide plate.
The. devices described present from. great advantages compared to known positive-transmission disks comprising cables the surface of which has a winding of constant -diameter wire in tight turns, in particular as a result of the reduction. rubbing contact surface between the flexible cable and its guide;
owing to the ease with which the protruding parts of the flexibe cable can act as rack teeth and, in the case of protruding threads, function as a worm for the transmission of movement between. wheels or other moving parts; and as a result of the fact that the cable which these devices described has, by its very construction, a natural greasing groove, except for the case of the -cable shown in FIGS. 3-8 to 40.
The construction of cables for the devices described above using wire wound in a helix under very high tension is easy and economical; this method of construction provides the rigidity necessary to prevent parts from shifting during service while maintaining perfect flexibility for the cable.
This flexibility of the cable gives it the ability to be able to serve as a rack or curved screw, and therefore, by engaging with a toothed wheel or its equivalent, to engage with a greater number of teeth or protrusions, which allows an increase in. power that can be transmitted.
