Un pision-valve c, présentant -des parties de -dia mètres -différents, est monté -de fa-#ou à pou voir se déplacer -dans ce corpsb; la partie in férieure -du piston constitue la valve Gylin- -drique c", ajustée dans un logement cylin drique correspondantV ménagé dans le corps b;
dans cette partie cylindrique c' (fig. 1) sont percés des ajutages calibrésd, conver- gents-divergeuts, répartis uniformément au tour de l'axe vertical du piston-valve. Les axes de ces ajutagges;
d peuvent être paral- lèl-es à cet axe du piston-valve (fig. 1, 3 et5) ou être inclinés par rapportà, celui-ci (fig. 4 et6). Au lieu d'être ménagés dans l'épaisseur même du piston-valve c, eomme représenté sur les fi-.1, 3, 4.5 et6, ces ajutagesd peuvent, -dans le cas où on -désire augmenter leur section de, passage, sans aug menter le diamètre du pistou-valve, être mé nagésà la, périphérie de ce -dernier, comme re présenté sur les fi-.7, 8 et9;

La partie médiane c' du piston-valve e comparte -à sa surfacedes ailettes: hélicoïdales es, ménageant entre elles des rainures héli- c6idales c',destinées à, communiquer un mou vement de giration au courant gazeux au- ,dessus des ajutagesd, au moment -de l'in- jeetion -dans le cylindre moteur a;
Dans l'épaisseur du corpsb sont égale ment percés' -des conduits i', i', partant d'un raccord i et aboutissant ù, une gorge annu lairej; celle-ci :débouche, dans la chambre intérieure du -corpsb, sous un diaphragmek, guidé et bloqué par un écrouF sur un siège b' ménagé dans le corpsb;
Dès qu'un cylindre a est hermétiquement clos (#c'est-ù,-dire,dè#s que les orifices -d'admis sion ou la soupape -d'admission sont fermés) au début de la phase de compression ,dans le cylindre, la. camef agit sur le piston-valve c et la soupape e, qui sont soli- ,daires l'un de, l'autre;
L'inflammation -dans le cylindreest pro duite par l'Atincelle électrique, la combustion a lieu, la pression s'élève -dans le cylindre jus qu'en fin de course. Ensuite s'effectue ladé- tente. motrice des gaz en combustion, suivie de l'échappement des gaz brûlés;
La distribution continue -du combustible, dans le courant gazeux en circulation -dans les canalisations, dispense -des calages rigoureux et de la précision que doivent nécessairement avoir les Pompes d'injection dans les moteurs Diesel ougenre Diesel (moteursà haute pres sion);
Pour permettre la mise en marche du moteur,à froid, en utilisant -des combustibles lourds, tels que pétrole lampant, alcools, gas- oils, huiles végétales, etc., dont les vapeurs sont ininflammablesà la température ordi naire, une résistance électrique r est enroulée (fig. 12) sur un manchon r' en matière élec triquement isolante, mais bonne conductrice -de la chaleur, qui est appliqué sur la paroi, bonne conductrice de la chaleur, -de la tubu lure -de dérivation li', reliant le collecteur h à la chambre -d'aspirationl' -du compresseur 1;
Dès la mise eu route, par la -circulation active assurée par le compresseur1, de toute la masse du mé- lanue carburé riche, destine-à alimenter les cylindres, et par le jeu de décharge :du col lecteurle -dans les cylindres et de charge de ce collecteur par ces cylindres, onobtient une circulation intense de la, masse gazeuse dans la partie chauffée de la dérivation h', et on obtient par suite l'injection d'une masse ga- muse chaude -dans les cylindres;
Au lieu de diffuser, comme décrit -en:dé- tail ci-dessus, le mélange carburé, riche dans l'air pur, contenu dans chaque cylindre, au début de la phase de compression dans cecy- lindre, et de produire alors par une étincelle électrique Fallumage du mélange carburé nor mal qui en résulte., on peut retarder l'intro duction de ce mélange carburé riche dans chaque cylindre, de façonà obtenir la forma tion du mélancre carburé normal au moment même où aji désire provoquer l'inflammation spontanée de celui-ci par une compression lé- n crèrement accrue;
Process for supplying an internal combustion engine, and engine for implementing this process. The present invention comprises a process for assigned for supplying an internal combustion engine, provided with a capacity common to the supply devices of the various cylinders and in which the fuel mixture is formed in the cylinders, during the compression phase, these cylinders having been previously filled with pure air. The invention also includes a motor for implementing the method.
The process according to the invention is charac- terized, ', in that a rich fuel mixture is prepared by continuously circulating with the aid of a compressor device (com presser, pump or the like), in a circuit of which this common capacity is a part, a gaseous mass in which a fuel is continuously injected, and in that this rich fuel mixture is sent into each of the cylinders, during the phase compression in this cylinder, so to diffuse it in the pure air, previously admitted into this cybrder. In a special embodiment of this process, the gaseous mass, which is circulated continuously in the circuit of which the common capacitor is part,
is constituted by a part of the normal carburized charge contained in each cylinder, forced back into the common capacity by each of the cylinders towards the end of the compression phase, as happens -in the engines to internal combustion of the type described in French patent no 669101, filed on 31 May 1928 by the same inventor. This normal fuel mixture can then be enriched, thus kept in continuous circulation, by a continuous injection of fuel, after which the rich fuel mixture thus formed can be sent into the air contained in each of the cylinders, during the phase -of com pressure.
The engine that the invention comprises is characterized in -that a manifold, common to the different cylinders, comprises a bypass going to the suction side of the compressor device, -in which the fuel is sprayed, tan-dis that the discharge side of the -dis-positive compressor is connected to the -feed devices -of the cylinders.
The homogeneity of the rich fuel mixture, obtained by the process according to the invention, can be greatly improved, because it takes a much longer time to prepare it, -in the circuit of which the common capacity is part, than when there is a specific sprayer device at each cylinder , as is the case -in the engine following French patent nc # 66 , 9l01- The attached drawings represent, to title d 2 -example, an embodiment -of the engine for the implementation of the process that com takes the invention.

The device for supplying each cylinder a -of the engine comprises a body b, made of metal which is a good conductor of heat, thermally isolated from the cylinder a by a seal (not shown), a poor conductor of heat, in order to maintain the body of the power supply device at a temperature greater than than that of the walls of the -cylinder.
A pision-valve c, presenting -parts of -dia meters -different, is mounted -def- # or to to see to move -in this body b; the lower part of the piston constitutes the Gylin- -drique valve c ", fitted in a corresponding cylindrical housing V provided in the body b;
in this cylindrical part c '(fig. 1) are drilled calibrated nozzles d, converging-diverging, distributed uniformly around the vertical axis of the piston- valve. The axes of these nozzles;
d can be parallel to this axis of the piston-valve (fig. 1, 3 and 5) </ B> or be inclined relative to to, the latter (fig. 4 and 6). Instead of being spared in the thickness of the piston-valve c , as shown in Figures 1, 3, 4. 5 and 6, these nozzles d can , -in the case where one -desired to increase their passage section, without increasing the diameter of the piston-valve, be moved to the periphery of this -last, as shown on the fi-. 7, 8 and 9;
-in; in this case, a rectified cap d ' is mounted externally to the lower part c' of the I) iston-valve c and is blocked, so as to form a body with - this and he will follow it - in all its. displacements -, the nozzles d can still be parallel to, the axis of the piston-valve (fig. 8) </ B> or inclined with respect to to this axis (fig. 9).
The middle part c 'of the piston-valve e compares -à its surface of fins: helical es, leaving between them helical grooves c ', intended to, impart a gyrating motion to the gas stream above the nozzles d, at the time of injection into the engine cylinder at;
these blades es are also used to guide -the piston-valve, -in the cylindrical housing b ' -of the body b, during its movements .
The upper part c5 of the piston-valve, of larger diameter, is provided with sealing rings c '.
The piston-valve c is integral with the. under e, establishing the, communication between the chamber g, formed inside the inside of the body b, and the cylinder a. The assembly of the piston-valve e and the valve e is controlled by a cam f, acting on a cross member f ', integral with the piston-valve c , and resting on return springs f, wound around guide rods f fixed in the body b of the feed device .
The cam f has a suitable profile to first allow a slow opening of the valve e, so that the fuel mixture passes from the feeder into the cylinder a, only through the additions d; this allows # to obtain a very high speed. of flow at the outlet of the nozzles, which is necessary to make the fuel mixture and to project it with, a sufficient live force in the cylinder which is, at this moment (start of the compression phase), filled with pure air.
Towards the end of the compression phase, under the action, d, - the cam f, the lower cylindrical part c ' of the piston-valve c leaves its housing P in the body b, and the annular passage section thus unmasked is added to the section nozzles d, thereby providing a larger communication section between cylinder a and the interior of the feed device.
The chamber g, formed inside the body b, under the upper part c 'of the piston-valve r, is in communication, by a conduit b ' drilled in the thickness of the body b, with a collector h, common # to all < I> cy- linders of the engine.
In the thickness of the body b are also drilled ' -ducts i', i ', starting from a fitting i and ending at ù, an annular groove < B> j; this: opens into the inner chamber of the body b, under a diaphragm k, guided and blocked by a nut F on a seat b ' provided in the body b;
this diaphragm k comprises, in its lower fa, - e, in relation to the annular groove j, an air- Dcular groove k ', from which small radial conduits k ', leading to the helical cells c' formed in the median part c 'of the piston-valve c.
A lug L- ', fixed -in the body b and penetrating into a groove of the -diaphragm k, orients it so Z15 that the ducts V are always in front of the helical cells c '.
As shown in Figs. 10, II and 12, the supply devices of the various cylinders are interconnected by the common collector h, which is intended to to be placed in communication with each of the eylinders a-, according to the ignition order, by the intermediary of the corresponding supply device.
From the lowest point of this collector li leaves a branch h ', , which connects it to. the suction chamber l ' of a small rotary compressor 1, controlled at, high speed by the motor itself - even, by the tree 1 '.
The lower part of the l ' discharge chamber of the -compressor 1 is connected to the -different cylinders supplying positive disks by in tubes, ending at junction i in body b of. feeding devices; these tubes m are covered with a heat-insulating jacket m ', in order to avoid a drop in temperature of the gas mixture during its passage through through #s tubes ..
A fuel distributor under pressure n, whose flow is variable and is regulated by a lever n ', is coupled to. the shaft l' of the compressor < B> 1 and is controlled, as well as the #compressor 1 itself, at a speed having an invariable relation with the speed of the shaft- crank -of the engine, in normal operation, but much greater than that of this crankshaft.
The delivery chamber of the fuel distributor n is connected, by a tube n ', to a mechanical spraying device o, placed in the suction chamber l' of the compressor 1 .
This mechanical spraying device can be replaced, as shown in phantom in o 'on the. fig. l9z, by a positive -de Venturi, single or multiple, au kind used for the. spraying gasoline into the carburetors and placed at the input of bypass W, going from the manifold li to the compressor 1.
The operation of this engine is as follows: Towards the end of the compression phase - in each, cylinder a, the cam f, by acting on la, crosses f ' of the piston-valve c, establish the. communication by a relatively large passage-section between this cylinder and its -feed device, by moving the valve ej away from its seat and by making -descent the lower cylindrical part c 'of the piston- va-Ive c, from a sufficient distance for it to be free from its housing b ' in the body b. A fraction of the normal fuel mixture,
formed in the cylinder in question, penetrates, passing through la, chamber g of the -feed-device, and through the pipe b ' in the body of the latter, in the common collector h. The different fractions of mixture because normal buré thus load the collector h.
The rotary compressor 1 sets in motion this mass - of normal fuel mixture, acc # amuIted in the manifold h, sucking it through the bypass h ', - in the chamber 1', by pushing it back into the chamber 1 ', and into it. return to the collector commmi h passing through the -device supplying each cy- linders, by the following route:
tube m, rac cord i, conduits. i ', i' and annular groove j -in the -body b, annular groove k 'and ducts k' -of the diaphragm k, grooves, helical- da, the c 'of the piston-valve, chamber g and conduit b' in the body b.
The normal fuel mixture, thus held in a continuous manner in rapid movement, is enriched, at. its passage -in the suction chamber the < / B> -from the rotary compressor 1, by supplying fuel due to the mechanical spraying device c (or by the Venturi device placed at the inlet ,, de la, -d- rivation h ', going from the manifold h to the compressor 1). This fuel supply, the flow of which is controlled by the -distributor n, is always carried out before the entry of the mass of gauze-Lise into the compressor 1 and into its -duction zone.
The rapid circulation, as well as the enriehis- sement of the normal fuel mixture stored in the callector h, takes place, so to speak, in a closed circuit; the compressor 1, as a result of the mixing which it produces, makes it possible to obtain a homogeneous mixture very rich in fuel.
As soon as a cylinder a is hermetically sealed (# that is to say, as soon as the inlet-ports or the inlet-valve are closed) at the start of the compression phase, in the cylinder, the. cam f acts on the piston-valve c and the valve e, which are integral with each other;
the valve e opens slowly at first (as a result -of the profile -given to the cam f), while the piston-valve descends, d slowly, its lower cylindrical part c 'still remaining engaged, in its housing b' in the body b; it follows that the -device of supply communicates with the cylinder only through the section, relatively small, d. nozzles
The rich fuel mixture, which circulates through through the feed device by the path -described above, passes through the linked grooves c ', which communicate to it a soft vement, of gyration ensuring a regular and uniform supply, from the d, -detensioning nozzles passing through the mixing chamber J between the parts c 'and c2 of the piston -valve c.
It is - therefore a rich fuel mixture which will be projected with very high speed by the nozzles d and which will be diffused by round bubbling or turbulence - in pure air, compressed in the cylinder a . The high flow rate is due to the high pressure ratio between the manifold h and the cylinder liner a, as well as to the profile of the nozzles d.
During the first phase of the injection period in cylinder a, the unloading of the manifold h is effected only by the nozzles #depreciation d, in such a way that if there still existed -du liquid fuel in droplet state, due to immobility of piston-valve c and valve e during the previous period, these droplets would be split by tearing and -dispering exited by the speed of the gas -expended at, the outlet -of the divergent part -of the nozzles d. During this time, the piston continuing its upward compression stroke in the cylinder has,
the pressure difference between the cylinder and the manifold fi decreases; when its value can no longer have any useful effect for spraying, the cam f, while continuing to turn, causes the cylindrical lower part c of the piston to come out. valve of its housing b ' in the body b; a large annular passage section is thus suddenly added to, that of the nozzles d, and the pressure is balanced between manifold h and cylinder a.
The heat input -due to the compression in the cylinder makes it possible to gasify the diffused fuel. At this moment, the air from the cy-. The cylinder is completely carbureted at a normal value, by the -dispersion and mixing of the rich gas injected into it. mass of air contained in the cylinder.
With the piston continuing its com pressure stroke in the cylinder, the direction of the current between the manifold h and the cylinder a is reversed; it is the cylinder which is discharged into the collector h - passing through the device for feeding the cylinder in question. A mass of normally carburized gas, in a volume equivalent to the volume of the rich fuel mixture which was previously injected into cylinder a, is returned to the manifold h, where it mixes with the gaseous mass which is already there and which y was returned in the same way by the other cylinders to the end of their compression phase.
This 01azous mass is enriched with fuel at its passage in front of the mechanical spraying device o (or in the Venturi device, as the case may be), and the rich fuel mixture is kept in continuous circulation by the compressor 1, passing through the tubes m, and the cylinders supply devices and the manifold h.
The charging period -of the normal carburetted mixture manifold by each of the cy- cylinders lasted up to the point of ignition in the cylinder in question; it is interrupted at this moment by the rapid closing -of the valve e, which is recalled to its seat by the springs f2, in order to -avoid combustion of the charge stored in the collector h.
The ignition -in the cylinder is produced by the electric spark, combustion takes place, the pressure rises -in the cylinder until the end of the stroke. Then the driving de- tent . of the combustion gases takes place, followed by the exhaust of the burnt gases;
the cylinder then admits a new displacement of pure air and, when the engine piston is at new at the start of effective compression, with all its orifices closed, the valve e, controlled by the, cam f, opens ,, again to allow injection -of fuel mixture in the pure air contained in the cylinder liner. The different phases of the cycle occur in the manner described above. It is the same for -all the cylinders -of the same engine, at turns -of role in the firing order .
The homogeneity -of the charge, finally obtained in each -of the cylinders, resulting from the -diffusion -of the rich fuel mixture in the pure air contained in the cylinder, is much greater than the homogeneity -of the mixture because buré which is obtained when a very small volume of liquid fuel is injected into a large mass of air. The ignition of this homogeneous mixture is made easier and its complete combustion is more rapid, which is a fundamental quality for the correct functioning of engines at very high speed, - of which the realization -is thus facilitated.
The fuel distributor operates at low pressure, since its role is to make the fuel charge penetrate, almost with continuous jet, in an environment where there is a pressure of only a few atmospheres, and that without great force.
The distribution of the fuel in the cy- linders being carried out at Low, with a large mass - of a gaseous fluid (in the form of a rich fuel mixture), it The result is the elimination of the capillary orifices and their replacement by -ducts of larger cross-section, allowing suitable flow rates.
The continuous distribution of the fuel, in the circulating gas stream in the pipes, dispenses with the rigorous timing and precision that injection pumps must necessarily have in Diesel or Diesel engines ( to </ B> high pressure);
in fact, in these engines, the regulation of the ignition point -from one cylinder to the other is linked to the injection precision of the fuel load in the cylinders by the pumps and i the amortization period of the strokes of the pumps (duration which is variable with the speed) - in the pipes leading the fuel to the injectors, pipes which are subject - in all their Io-nuueur to the high delivery pressures of the injection pumps.
If the best performance is to be obtained, it is necessary to thermally insulate the walls of the pipes by circulating air or hot gas in a casing surrounding these pipes, as shown in p in fig. 10, Il and 12. The gaseous masses circulating in these pipes must neither be heated nor cooled, if the conditions of equilibrium envisaged in the construction of the engine are to be maintained ( volume of the compression chambers in the cylinders), starting from a given engine.
The overpressure supplied to the rich fuel mixture at the discharge of the compressor 1, is very low and must be just sufficient to maintain a suitable speed -of this mixture, - rich fuel in the tubes m, connecting the -delivery chamber P of the compressor 1 to the -feed-devices of the various cylinders, to avoid any accumulation -of liquid fuel.
To allow the engine to be started, at cold, using heavy fuels, such as kerosene, alcohols, gas oils, vegetable oils, etc., the vapors of which are non-flammable at the ordinary temperature, an electric resistance r is wound (fig. 12) on a sleeve r 'of electrically insulating material, but good conductor of heat, which is applied to the wall, good conductor of heat, -of the bypass-pipe li ', connecting the manifold h to the -suction chamber l' -of the compressor 1;
this resistance r is protected by an outer casing r, made of refractory material. Before the starting of the motor, the resistor r is heated, for approximately one minute, by the low voltage at current supplied by a battery of accumulators, used for starting the engine.
From the start-up, by the active -circulation provided by the compressor 1, of all the mass of the rich carburetted melanue, intended -to to supply the cylinders, and by the discharge clearance: from the drive neck the -in the cylinders and charging this manifold by these cylinders, an intense circulation of the gaseous mass in the heated part of the bypass h 'is obtained, and consequently the injection of a hot gasoline mass is obtained into the cylinders;
after a few turns of the crankshaft, the temperature reached by the fuel mixture, compressed in the cylinders, may be sufficient to allow the charge to be ignited by an electric spark (normal ignition). To facilitate this ignition, we pass a train of sparks, to the candle, at the start, if we have # one, magneto -de de- part, as used in 4'aviatic # n engines, where a high frequency vibrator is inserted into the primary circuit of the coil-transformer of a battery ignition.
DM that the motor has reached a steady state-, the deactivation of the vibrator, as well as the resistance r, is operated with using the same switch.
One could also, in place of the rotary compressor à palet-tes 1, -use any compressor device, such as a centrifugal turbine à high speed, a piston pump, a diaphragm pump or any other, without changing anything in the mode of formation and circulation of the to injection into the cylinders.
The fuel-distributor n can be an appliance -of any suitable type, with piston, with membrane, with vanes, to gears, #D Zn etc .; however, its flow must be adjustable during operation.
It is also possible to feed the dec- written engine with a gaseous fuel without -changing anything to the -cy linders-supply-device; it suffices to replace the liquid fuel distributor n by a à ga - z pump, of any type, also at variable flow and adjustable in pan, as for the to operation with liquid fuel.
In both cases, the speed and power of the engine described is adjusted by varying the mass of air admitted to the related cylinders. with the adjustment of the corresponding quantity of fuel required.
Instead of diffusing, as described -in : detail- tail above, the fuel mixture, rich in pure air, contained in each cylinder, at the start of the compression phase in this < B> cylinder, and then produce by an electric spark the ignition of the normal fuel mixture which results therefrom., The introduction of this rich fuel mixture into each cylinder can be delayed, so to obtain the formation of the normal carburized melanchor at the very moment when aji wishes to induce spontaneous ignition of the latter by a slightly increased compression;
in the latter case, an auxiliary compressor is needed to supply the common capacity at with sufficient pressure with pure air, and the communication between this common capacity and the cylinder # must then be interrupted a little before the point of ignition, so to avoid ignition #of the rich mixture in this joint capacity.
