Automatic closing device for tub filling pipes. The object of the present invention is an automatic closing device for tub filling conduits which makes it possible both to prevent flooding and to save water.
This device comprises a pipe for carrying water extending into the bathtub and a closure member for automatically and at least partially stopping, in due time, the flow through this pipe, which member is connected to a float placed inside said pipe.
This device may be combined with an alarm giving the alarm to the supervisory personnel when the filling of the container is finished.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a first device according to the invention, partially in section; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a warning device which can be combined with the closing device, and FIG. 3 shows a second embodiment in section.
The device shown in FIG. 1 consists of a pipe 1 extending into a bathtub (not shown) and which is connected to the usual mixing nozzle 2 by means of a connection 3. The nozzle 2 has two supply pipes, 4 for cold water and ô for hot water, and the flow rate of which can be adjusted using taps 6 and 7 and the usual needle taps 8 and 9 which will normally always be open.
The pipe 1, which can be provided with means for varying its length, carries at its lower end a nozzle 10 containing a distributor 11 whose flow orifices are designated by 12. The length of the pipe 1 or else the length of the pipe. distance of the nozzle 10 from the bottom of the tub is determined by the height of the water level to be admitted into this tub. Inside the distributor 11 slides a cylindrical shutter 13 which, in the form shown, is connected directly to a cork float 14, the shutter 13 is hollow. 11 has openings 15 corresponding to the orifices 12 of the distributor 11 thus allowing the passage of water through the distributor and the shutter. The clearance between these latter pieces is determined by practice.
In the resting position represented by lines and dots in FIG. 1, the openings 15 are at the same height as the orifices 12 and the shutter rests on a part 16 pierced with holes 17 and fixed to the bottom of the base 10. The latter has, below the distributor 11, holes exhaust 18 for the air discharged when the float is raised 14.
The device described operates as follows: To prepare a bath, the taps 6 and 7 are opened as usual so as to obtain a mixture of a desired temperature. The water flows into the bathtub following the path indicated by the arrows (fig. 1), the float being in its lower position.
When the water level in the bathtub reaches the float 14, a mold occurs where the thrust on the float is greater than the weight of the latter increased by the various forces of inertia and resistance (friction between parts 11 and 13 , resistance of water veins passing through openings 12 and 15, etc.). The float and the shutter then rise and reach the position shown in fig. 1. The water veins are thus automatically cut off.
After the shutter has operated, there may be exchanges of liquid between the hot and cold water pipes, especially if the pressures are different. In order to avoid this drawback, balls 19 and 20 have been provided in these pipes 4 and 5 in the fittings 21 and 22 which generally already exist. If these fittings are found in the horizontal parts of the conduits 4 and 5, one only has to put the balls 19 and 20 under the action of weak springs which will return these balls always to their rest state.
A warning device could be provided which operates as soon as the valve is closed by the shutter and uses the excess pressure produced at that moment in the nozzle. Such a warning device is shown in FIG. 2. It has a socket 23 which screws into a threaded hole in nozzle 10 a little above orifices 12 of distributor 11. Inlet 24 of socket 23 is held closed by a ball 25 and a spring 26. A flat disc 27 provided with a heel 28 can be screwed more or less into the socket and serves to adjust the pressure of the spring 26 on the ball 25 and the distance between the latter and the heel 28.
When the openings 12 are closed; the water pressure pushes the ball 25 back and the water can exit through the opening 29. There is therefore always a small quantity of water which passes through the socket 23. Depending on the pressure of the spring 26 on the ball 25, a vibration occurs which, when amplified by resonance, produces a sound of a certain intensity which indicates that the desired water level in the tub has been reached. This alarm works without electric current. The use of this appliance is therefore absolutely safe and does not fall under the law of certain countries prohibiting the use of electricity in bathrooms.
The device described ensures absolute safety without having to monitor the filling of the bathtub. It allows a great saving of water and time.
The dimensions of the different parts are determined by experience according to the flow rate and the water pressure admitted into the bathtub. The materials constituting these different parts can be any.
The device can be constructed in such a way that the inflow of water into the bathtub is completely or only partially intercepted. Many construction details can be modified without departing from the scope of the present invention. The float 14, while being placed in the pipe, instead of being connected rigidly with the shutter 13, can, for example, be connected indirectly with the latter and can be formed by an air chamber. This shutter can also slide outside the distributor 11, as in the example shown in FIG. 3 in which the water flows through a clearance left between the float and the wall of the pipe. The water inlet can also be closed by a rotary shutter controlled by a float placed in the pipe.
