Additional patent to main patent no. 150306. Process for the preparation of an azo dye for cotton. According to the invention, a dye is obtained which dyes cotton with a vivid bluish tinge of red, which color changes to red-violet of excellent lightfastness on aftertreatment with copper salts if the body has the following constitutional formula
EMI0001.0007
Treated so carefully with a reducing agent that bonding between the nitrogen atoms of the nitro groups of two molecules occurs.
Example: The diazo compound prepared from 18.2 parts of 5-nitro-2-aminobenzene-1-carboxylic acid runs into a cold solution of 34.8 parts of 1- oxy-8-ethoxynaphthalene that is kept alkaline by sodium carbonate. 3 # 6-disulfonic acid. After the coupling has ended, 4 parts of sodium hydroxide and 15.6 parts of sodium sulfide are added and the mixture is stirred at 60 for one hour. The color changes from orange to blue.
The amino dye is deposited by adding sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid and then separated from the liquid. The dye is dissolved in about 1000 parts of water. 15 parts of sodium bicarbonate are added and a solution of 20 parts of 4-nitrobenzoyl chloride in acetone is added dropwise with vigorous stirring. If no more amino compounds can be detected, the bluish-red nitrobenzoyl amino compound is salted out and separated from the liquid.
The dye is mixed with about 1500 parts of water at 60 ° C. After adding a solution of 16 parts of sodium hydroxide and 16 parts of grape sugar, the mixture is stirred for a few hours at 60, whereupon the dye is salted with carrion.
The color of the new dye hardly differs from the nitro compound, but it does differ in its greater solubility in water and its greater relationship to cotton.
The nitro compound used as the starting material can also be obtained by dianotating 5-nitrobenzoylamino-2-aminobenzene-1-carboxylic acid and coupling it with 1-oxy-8-ethoxynaphthalene-3 # 6-disulfonic acid.
Instead of converting the dye into the copper varnish after dyeing on the cotton fiber, the copper compound produced in substance can be used for dyeing, which is obtained as follows: 70 parts of the dye are dissolved in water. A solution of 25 parts of crystallized copper sulfate is added and the mixture is stirred until the color has turned a uniform purple. A solution of 12 parts of sodium carbonate is used to make weakly alkaline, then the dye is washed with salt and worked up in the usual way.
The dry dye forms a dark powder which dissolves in water with a red-violet color and dyes cotton in just such shades of excellent lightfastness.
