Process for the preparation of a vat dye. In the Swiss patent no. 143998 and the additional patents no. 148687-148695 processes for the preparation of symmetrical or asymmetrical naphthoylene diarylimidazoles of the following general formula are described
EMI0001.0005
where Ri and Rs are an unsubstituted or substituted arylene radical and where the naphthalene ring is replaced by substituents such as halogen.
Oxy, alkoxy, etc. can be substituted. These dyes are obtained by condensation of an o-diamine with a naphthylene aryl (or alkylaryl) imidazole peridicarboxylic acid or the corresponding anhydride of the general formula:
EMI0001.0020
in which Ri denotes an arylene radical which is identical or different to the arylene radical of the ortho-diamine and in which the naphthalene ring, as indicated above, can be substituted.
It has now been found that valuable new quality dyes can be obtained if a naphthoylene aryl (or alkylaryl) iinidazole peridicarboxylic acid or a derivative of this body is condensed with a compound of the X-NH2 type, where X = hydrogen, alkyl, Oxalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, hydroaryl or a substituted or unsubstituted amino group (hydrazine) means.
Instead of the peri-dicarboxylic acids mentioned, the corresponding dicarboxylic anhydrides can be used with the same success. In the context of the present invention, this process is to be regarded as an equivalent process.
The new vat dyes available in this way have the following general constitutional formula:
EMI0002.0016
where Ri denotes an arylene group which is bonded in two adjacent positions and which can be substituted, R = for hydrogen, alkyl, oxalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, hydroaryl or a substituted or unsubstituted amino group and in which the naphthalene ring,
as stated above, may be substituted.
It is surprising that these new derivatives are useful vat dyes, since the 1.4.5.8-naphthalene-teti-acarboxylic acid-dialkyl- or arylimides
EMI0002.0033
are almost uncolored. The new dyes are distinguished by clear nuances, great color strength and good fastness properties.
The same dyes can be obtained by using the naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid derivatives of the following general formula:
EMI0002.0036
where R is hydrogen, alkyl, oxyalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, hydroaryl or a substituted or unsubstituted amino group, such as hydrazine, condensed with ortho diamines or their salts in the presence or absence of solvents or diluents.
The same dyes are also formed if the starting products given above are condensed with ortho-nitroamino compounds and these condensation products:
EMI0002.0049
treated with reducing agents, with simultaneous ring closure.
The subject of this additional patent is a process for the preparation of a vat dye, which is characterized in that naphthylene-4. 5-dichlorobenzimidazole peridicarboxylic acid anhydride condensed with cyclohexylamine. .
Example: 4.1 parts by weight of naphthylene-4,5-dichlorobenzimidwzol-peridicarboxylic acid respectively. The corresponding amount of anhydride is heated gently for a few hours with five to six times the amount by weight of cyclohexylamine. After cooling, it is filtered off with suction, washed out with cyclohexylamine and then with hot water. The dye is a yellow powder and stains cotton from a green, weakly alkaline hydration vat in yellow tones; the authenticity properties are good.
The formula comes from the dye:
