Process for the production of a plastic. The subject of the invention is a process for the production of a synthetic material, which is characterized in that urea and formaldehyde and casein and formaldehyde are condensed in a mixture at high temperature until a mixture is formed by heating curable condensation products, and these condensation products converted into the insoluble and infusible state by the action of heat. The condensation can be carried out with or without the application of condensation agents.
If you try to convert a protein, in particular casein, into a concentrated solution, for example by stirring one part by weight of casein with two parts by weight of 10% sodium hydroxide solution; so you get a tough part. If you treat this tough dough with formaldehyde, it instantly coagulates into a mass that is difficult to process.
The surprising observation has now been made that the tough dough is liquefied by the addition of urea; Immediately after stirring this substance it changes into a water-thin liquid. The sol produced in this way unexpectedly has the technically extremely valuable property of not coagulating when exposed to formaldehyde in the heat. but to form a mixed colloid by condensation with the aldehyde.
This mixed colloid, which arises extremely easily, can be made technically usable in many different ways. In particular, it is suitable on the one hand for the production of molding compounds, which deliver high-quality pellets through translucent to white, light-resistant, and on the other hand for the production of plastic masses in the narrower sense (molded plastics, e.g. plates or rods). When carrying out the process, the casein can be added to the reaction mixture at the same time as the other starting materials or can be added to the reaction mixture during the condensation of the amide component with the formaldehyde.
An indispensable condition for achieving the specified effect is that the casein still has an effect with the formaldehyde and that a mixed colloid can be formed in this way.
The condensation product is conveniently dried and ground. It then represents a white powder which, under the combined or separate action of heat and pressure, can be pressed into completely light-resistant, translucent to white compacts of all kinds.
Such compacts can be used as a replacement for milk glass, porcelain, etc., in the field of gallantry and jewelry and in similar areas, as well as electrotechnical insulation material in the most extensive way, without this listing the many possible uses would be exhausted.
The viscosity-reducing effect of urea on casein is also advantageous when generating the condensation product in the form of plates or rods.
The production of the known plastics from protein materials, especially Ka, is done in such a way that a dough is formed from the protein material used, which is preformed into plates or rods, then subjected to the action of formaldehyde and finally dried. Plastics obtained in this way have a number of defects, among which the difficulty in producing thicker pieces, the sensitivity to water, the poor heat resistance and the low electrical strengths are particularly troublesome.
These disadvantages can be avoided according to the method of the invention by mixing, for example, urea, casein and a dry, formaldehyde-releasing substance (such as trioxymethylene) and applying pressure and heat, with or without the addition of a contact agent, for mutual action brings. A drying process is expediently connected to this.
Embodiments: 1. 100 parts by weight of casein are mixed with about 120 parts by weight of water, a granular paste being formed. 80 parts by weight of urea are then added. This urea component initially only has the purpose of liquefying the mass by turning the granular casein pulp into an almost water-thin solution as soon as the urea is dissolved. Due to the easy solubility of the urea, it liquefies in the cold. It can be supported by gentle warming.
The casein-urea solution produced in this way is then introduced into a boiling solution of 80 parts by weight of urea and 200 parts by weight of formaldehyde and heated until. . a hardenable mixed colloid has formed.
Two different routes can be used for further processing of the reaction product. The heating is either continued until a hydrophobic condensation product separates out on cooling, which can be promoted by suitable adjustment of the hydrogen ion concentration. The resinous mixed colloid obtained in this way is then converted into a press powder as such by drying and grinding, preferably with the addition of suitable fibers.
Such a press powder is obtained in another way by leaving the resinous mixed colloid in solution and soaking fibrous materials with this solution in order to then dry and grind them. In both cases, the result is a press powder which is converted into the insoluble and infusible state by the application of heat and, if necessary, pressure. For example, it can be shaped into a wide variety of types of pressed objects in the hot press.
The ratio of casein to urea on the one hand and to formaldehyde on the other hand can be changed in various ways. n 2. To produce the condensation product as a molding, for example from plates or rods, urea is intimately kneaded together with casein and paraformaldehyde, and the proportions can vary within wide limits. The mass produced in this way is then, for example, in the hot press, deformed into plates or rods. The action of heat and pressure in the hot press results in the condensation of the reaction mixture and the conversion into the insoluble and infusible final state. After shaping, the goods are dried and can now be used in a variety of ways.
Instead of paraformaldehyde, other formaldehyde-releasing substances can also be used.
The appearance and properties of both the initially mentioned press powder and the molded articles described above can be influenced in various ways by mechanical incorporation of fillers and additives of all kinds. For example, thanks to their absolute lightfastness, these products can be colored with organic and inorganic dyes in all shades.
Both the pellets produced from the pressed powders and the plastic masses already have very high mechanical strengths. If fibrous substances of organic or inorganic nature are also incorporated into them mechanically in processed or unprocessed form - i.e. in the form of paper, fabrics, fibers, flakes and the like - technical materials with good mechanical strength are obtained.
