Description
Process to facilitate the storage and shipping of acetylene, especially for the purposes of oxy-fuel processing. It is known to store gases, in particular for welding and cutting purposes, in a compressed state and to send them. This method has disadvantages insofar as the dead weight of the filling vessels compared to the gas content is very high, so that the storage and transport of such gases cause high costs. It is also known to store and send such gases in a liquefied state at normal pressure.
In this state, the gases have a low temperature, so that special heat-insulated vessels are required to store these liquids. It is also known that the high heat transfer of the liquids in such vessels causes vigorous evaporation, so that strong evaporation losses of the liquefied gases cannot be avoided in this process.
As far as the acetylene gas, which is widely used in autogenous metalworking, is concerned, on the one hand, it cannot be stored and sent in a compressed state; rather, it is only permissible to store it in absorption solutions such as acetone under low pressure. On the other hand, for safety reasons, it is not permitted to store and ship acetylene in a liquefied state at higher pressure. Then there is also the storage and dispatch of this gas. liquefied state at ordinary pressure is out of the question, since acetylene is known to not be available as a liquid at atmospheric pressure.
According to the present invention, the storage and dispatch of acetylene is now facilitated in such a way that it is converted into the solid state, the gas snow formed being expediently compressed by pressure in order to achieve a lower evaporation surface . The acetylene can be converted into snow by cooling it to below its melting point using known means, such as compression, relaxation, countercurrent cooling, etc.
The gas snow is expediently compressed in such a way that compacts are formed in suitable devices that can be stored and sent without heavy and expensive containers.
