Method of operating a rotary pressurized fluid machine and a machine for its implementation. The present invention relates to a method of actuating a rotating machine by a pressurized fluid, of the type in which the reciprocating movement of sliding pistons is transformed into a rotational movement by virtue of the contact. head parts of the pistons with an annular crown surrounding the pistons and to which the thrust of the pistons is transmitted to im primer a rotational movement to the annular crown.
Machines of this type are already known in which the annular ring gear is established in the form of an individual floating ring separated from the casing of the machine itself by friction reducing means in the form of a rolling bearing. balls.
In the known types of machines, however, the pistons are entirely independent of the ring ring, the contact between the head parts of the pistons and the ring ring being obtained by means of roller bearings or ball bearings, or the pistons are fixed to the ring ring, so that the pistons and the ring ring together perform a rotational movement throughout the operating cycle of the machine.
According to the method according to the present invention, the pressurized fluid is caused to produce a coupling between the pistons and the ring ring which surrounds them, so that the pistons and the ring ring are at the. times brought to turn together. In the machine claimed for carrying out this method, the sliding pistons of the machine are connected to the annular ring by means of pivoting parts, this connection being able to be established in such a way that, if necessary, a sliding can occur between these parts and the annular crown, so that the annular crown acts like a handwheel to ensure uniform operation of the machine.
Friction reduction means can be provided between the annular crown by rotating the pistons and the outer casing of the machine. Preferably, the annular ring is established as an integral part of these friction reducing means.
Several embodiments of the machine according to the invention are shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which FIG. 1 shows a polycylindrical machine in cross section, passing through the casing of the machine and the cylinder block; Fig. 2 is a section taken along the line A-A of FIG. 1; Fig. 3 is a section through the cylinder block and a steam inlet journal and shows means for reversing the direction of rotation of the machine; Fig. 4 shows on a larger scale details of these reversing means; Fig. 5 shows in elevation a multiple expansion machine of the type indicated; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the multiple expansion machine shown in FIG. 5.
The machine shown in fig. 1 and 2 comprises an envelope having a side wall 1 and a removable cover 2 forming the other side wall of the envelope of the machine. These side walls are provided with aligned bosses 3 and 4, disposed eccentrically with respect to the axis of the casing of the machine. A fixed journal 5 is housed in one of the bosses of the side walls of the casing. This journal is hollow and is divided by a partition 6 so as to form an inlet chamber 7 and an exhaust chamber 8 for the pressurized fluid. The journal 5 penetrates inside the casing of the machine and its internal end is closed. Peripheral intake 9 and 10 exhaust lights are provided in the frozen journal.
On the fixed journal, which is preferably slightly conical, is mounted a disc or circular block 11, provided with a number of radial pockets or cylinders 12, in each of which is housed a sliding piston 13. Radial slots 14 in the disc II establish communication between each cylinder on the one hand, and the aforementioned peripheral ports .d'mission and exhaust of the cylinder 5 on the other hand, when the disc 11 rotates.
One face of the disc or cylinder block 11 is recessed to form a housing for a ball bearing 15, mounted on the spindle and its outer face is also recessed for fixing the control shaft 16, also supported by means. a ball bearing 17, housed in the boss, of the corresponding side wall of the casing of the machine.
Each piston is provided with a pivot shoe 18, which is provided with a tab 19 arranged to slide in a dovetail groove 20 of the inner face of an annular ring 21 housed in the casing. . In the embodiment shown, this annular ring forms the inner element of a ball or roller bearing 22, the outer element 23 of which is fixed to the casing of the machine.
Due to the fact that the pivot shoes 18 are fixed in the manner described, that is to say loosely connected to the annular crown, a slip can occur between each shoe and the internal ph6ric face of the crown shoes of the ring. when piston Ja and speed of the cut-off peril of the piston shoes and the annular crown varies, owing to the eccentric arrangement of the group of pis tons in the crown which surrounds it and in the casing. To facilitate the assembly of the pivot shoes on the dovetail grooves, these shoes are preferably made in two pieces connected together by means of a bolt 24.
The operation of the machine constructed as described above is as follows: When the pressurized fluid is admitted into the journal through the pipe 25, this fluid enters the cylinder through the radial lumen - which coincides at the same time with the peripheral lumen of the cylinder. admission of the journal, so as to force the piston mounted in this cylinder to move outwards towards the annular ring surrounding the group of pis tons.
The outward thrust of the piston is transmitted to the ring 21 by means of its bot 18, so that the ring 21 is rotated by the tangential component of the thrust of the piston produced due to the eccentric arrangement of the piston. cylinder block relative to ring 21. The rotation will occur around the frozen journal as an axis. As a result of the pressure of the working fluid on the pistons, in this phase of the cycle, a relative slip between the shoe and the inside face of the ring 21 will be eliminated, the piston and the ring being coupled in this part of the cycle.
It results in particular from FIG. 1 that during a joint rotation of the ring 21 and the piston 13, the expansion of the working fluid will force the piston to reach its point of maximum expansion, at which point the driving fluid has completed its work. The piston will then occupy the raised position of FIG. 1. During the subsequent rotation, the piston will begin, continuing its contact with the ring, to be brought back in the opposite direction so as to cause the discharge of the fluid which is inside the cylinder and which now has l maximum expansion, through the exhaust port 10 with which the cylinder then communicates through the corresponding opening 14.
Continuing its rotation, the udder will finally be pushed inward to the bottom of the cylinder, and the rotational movement still continuing, there. Vapor inlet port 9 of the journal will eventually allow a new charge of pressurized fluid to pass into the cylinder and again there will be outward movement of the pis ton and hence a new cycle of rotation of the cylinder. group of udders and the annular crown that surrounds it.
By virtue of the eccentric arrangement of the cylinder block 11 with respect to the annular ring 2, it is understood that a difference in the peripheral movement will have to occur between these two parts. This difference will be accompanied by a rela tive sliding of the rotary cylinder block with respect to the ring. This sliding is made possible by the fact that the shoes 18 connected to the udder heads are brought into sliding relation with the annular ring 21, so as to be able to slide, the tongues 19 of the shoes cooperating with the., Tail groove d dovetail 20 of the crown.
All. by allowing the possibility that the necessary relative slippage may occur, this construction also prevents the pistons from being able to return fully backwards in the cylinders when the machine is inactive. The period, in which slip is necessary, is placed at such a point in the operating cycle that the pressurized fluid having completed good expansion. exerts relatively little pressure on the piston and shoe so that the necessary sliding can occur.
It may sometimes be desirable to reverse the direction of rotation of the machine control shaft and, therefore, also of the cylinder block to which the shaft is attached. For this purpose, means have been provided by which one can easily perform such a reversal of the rotation. These 'means are shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 of the drawing.
Referring to Figs. 3 -and 4, the steam enters the journal 26 through the pipe 27. A partition 30 divides the journal into an inlet chamber 28 and an exhaust chamber 29. In the hollow journal is housed a rod 31 which can. be rotated by means of a lever 32. On this rod is fixed a segment 33 with -de ribs 34.
This segment is arranged so as to be able to slide in the peripheral opening which is provided in the wall of the journal entry chamber and it is shorter than this opening, so that it is established between the edge of this segment and the edge of the peripheral opening an opening 35 which actually forms the inlet port from the hollow journal to the corresponding port in the cylinder. As the rod 31 is rotated, the segment 33 moves around the rod as an axis.
The opening 35 will then be closed, but there will be between the opposite edge of the segment and the peripheral opening in the pa king of the journal another opening through which the pressurized fluid can now enter the cylinders.
The journal itself is also arranged in such a way that it can be adjusted in rotation with respect to the casing of the machine and to the inlet pipe of the pressurized fluid. This rotational adjustment can be performed as follows: When the rod 31 is turned, this rotational movement will first be transmitted to segment 33, which can slide in the peripheral opening in the wall of the journal as it has been. Explain.
As the rod continues to turn, the respective edge of the segment will engage with the edge of the light in the journal wall, so that the journal itself is caused to rotate, resulting in overturning. relative positions of the inlet and outlet chambers for the pressurized fluid with respect to the supply pipe. Accordingly, the direction of rotation of the cylinder block and its associated shaft will be reversed upon subsequent admission of pressurized fluid to the journal after the rotation thereof has been produced.
Two or more units of a machine working according to the principle described can be mated together, so as to function as a compound or multiple expansion machine, the exhaust of the units at a higher pressure being returned to the exhaust. admission of a unit working at a lower pressure.
Figs. 5 and 6 show, by way of example, a double expansion machine thus established. 36 indicates the high pressure unit and 37 indicates the low pressure unit of such a compound machine. The pressurized fluid is supplied to the high pressure unit through the pipe 38 and the exhaust fluid leaves the latter through the pipe 39. The exhaust fluid from the high pressure unit is conducted to the exhaust pipe. fluid intake 40 from the low pressure unit 37. The exhaust from the low pressure unit 37 is through line 47.
While radially arranged pistons and cylinders have been described in the previous example, it should be noted that these need not be strictly radially disposed, but may also be tangential to a circle of a smaller diameter than the circular cylinder block and concentric with it.
In addition, it may be advantageous in some cases to fit more than one block or say cylinder in the same machine enclosure. In this case, a common annular crown can be provided for more than one group of pistons or, if desired, each group of pistons can be provided with its own crown.
