Endless chain for a vehicle and method for its manufacture. The present invention is an endless chain for a vehicle and a method for its manufacture.
The chain is composed of a plurality of links connected by pivots and each comprising a part having the general shape of a U, the middle part of which is -des tinée to come into contact with the ground, and of which the side parts constitute walls in which are formed .des holes for the passage and fixing of the pivots.
The chain is preferably of the type that is the subject of the English patent no. 248889. The latter chain is of the box spring type, that is to say the links of which are constructed in such a way (for example by providing stops or interlocking cleats on the adjacent links) only when the: chain links are closed by themselves on a predetermined arc, no force due to pressure in a vertical plane is not supported by the connection pins - links. The word link is taken here, and will be taken later, in its general sense - part of a chain.
The chain is preferably similar to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 8, 9 and 10 of the cited patent, in which each link comprises a median part of the tines to come to rest on the ground and having vertical lateral plates or walls having holes for the fixing of feet and stops or cleats, the nesting surfaces of which are located practically in a horizontal plane, when they are in the cooperative position, and thanks to this, the connection pins are relieved .des forces directed downwards.
In this chain, slums the pivots have been found to be completely free from vertical forces and although these are the greatest forces, other forces occur during chain operation. The chain according to. the invention is established, as will be seen later, in the ibut to relieve the pivots of at least some of these other efforts.
The latter can be counted as follows: a) Those in horizontal planes due mainly to the rotating movement of the part of the chain in contact with the ground, which tend to force adjacent chains to move relative to each other of an angle in a horizontal plane.
b) Those due to a relative lateral movement between the links which, although they are small, should preferably be prevented when walking on the side of inclined ground or at a place where the adhesion enters. the ground and some links is uneven and combined with lateral forces.
c) Those due to the movement of the links approaching or moving away from each other in a longitudinal direction and caused by the entrainment of the. chain or by any braking action on it or by the frictional action created by the rollers which transmit the load to the chain. This action is usually referred to as friction and will be. hereinafter referred to as such.
The chain according to the invention is characterized in that each link has means for relieving the pivots of forces which tend to be exerted on them during the operation of the chain.
The process for the. manufacture of this chain is characterized in that each link is formed by stamping a metal plate.
In an example of application, the chain may be formed of links whose parts or side walls have stops or cleats whose interlocking surfaces are arranged to operate in at least approximately horizontal planes, and are provided with additional abutments or cleats having -d'emboument ment surfaces located in at least approxi mately vertical planes. The stops can, in this case, be, for example, formed by bending outwardly parts of the metal on one of the side plates, the opposite side plate having a part of the metal cut to leave vertical cleats whose faces internal stoppers.
The central part can also preferably be seen as abutments having surfaces which make contact in the vertical plane. These stops serve to compensate for the vertical abutments of the side plates, so that each connection pivot is supported by four stops, two vertical and two horizontal. The stops on the middle part preferably have the shape of a wedge, so that they place each chain not transversely with respect to; adjacent links and thus prevent movement due to b).
They can be male and female, a stop being formed at each end of the middle part at the same time as a recess of similar shape, the stop and the corresponding recess being arranged in opposition to the two ends.
The stops in the vertical plane, in addition to helping the horizontal stops to support the downward load, also serve to prevent any tendency of the chain to bend sideways, that is to say to undergo the stresses. on the pivots, indicated under a) above, which sometimes happens with the chain not having only horizontal stops, when the vehicle on which the.
chain is mounted operates a change (in direction, i.e. the links tend to place themselves at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the link (s) .adja hundred, which is prevented only by the pivots coming into operation, or by the adjustment between the faces of the horizontal stops, the latter being insufficient in certain cases.
In the embodiment of the links of the chain indicated in the cited patent and in certain embodiments of the chain described later, the raceway or the part of the links on which the rollers are running is located at an appreciable distance below the plane of the link pins, so that at places where the chain winds itself around the rollers or unwinds from them coming in contact or on leaving the ground, there occurs what is called the friction effect, that is to say friction of said rollers on the raceway.
When the links pass around the rollers they open creating holes in the raceway, these days close when the links move into the closed position to make contact with the ground. It is clear that at a given moment the front roller is in contact with a link which is in the interlocking position and with one or more links which are not. not in nesting position.
Any relative movement between these links will create a frictional force between this roller, carrying the load, and the links, an effort tending to separate or to close the links, either that they are wound up and unwound on the rollers and thus pull on the junction pins.
This friction and the resulting stresses on the pivot can be eliminated and according to another embodiment of the chain, in which, for each link, the rolling path is provided slightly below the axes of the pins. holes for the connecting pins. In this position of the raceway, a relative circumferential movement between the roller and the link or a frictional effect should not occur or only occur to a negligible amount.
The chain according to the present invention is particularly suitable for wheelbarrows, hand trucks and other similar vehicles. The chain can be used with a wheelbarrow comprising a movable train to support the chain, mounted so as to be able to pivot on the axis supporting the load of the. wheelbarrow, this axis preferably being mounted in consoles of the frame of the wheelbarrow.
The mobile train can be constituted by a pair of wheels or single or twin discs, which are connected by one or more oscillating arms pivoted at their center on the axis.
Clearly, in cases where it is desired to support greater weights than can support a single chain, more than one suitably arranged chain can be employed.
It has been found advantageous to arrange the abutting or interlocking surfaces of the links so that the latter interlock at an angle such that the chain in effect acts as a wheel having 25 to 40 cm in diameter.
As a result, the effort required to push the. Wheelbarrow with the chain over soft or rough surfaces is much less than that required to push the wheelbarrow when it is fitted with an ordinary wheel. The pressure on the ground is distributed so that soft surfaces are not dented or marked.
In addition, it is possible that the center of the chain supports a greater load than is the case for wheelbarrows fitted with a wheel of the usual type, which removes part of the load on the arms. the wheelbarrow during transport and the width of the chain in relation to the length in contact with the ground, and gives great lateral stability.
In a more suitable embodiment for a heavier type of chain, the stops or the cleats of the links may have spherical interlocking surfaces.
In another embodiment, the stops may be arranged at each end of the side walls or plates of the chain, in stages with respect to each other and may have convex spherical surfaces .destinées, when they are in the interlocking position, to engage with concave spherical faces formed on the stops arranged on each side of the side plates.
In this construction, the rolling path on which the rollers run is preferably raised to a plane slightly below the axes of the holes for the connection pins.
It will be noted that these spherical mating surfaces take the place of both the vertical and horizontal stops provided in the embodiment cited above or in other words, their function is to eliminate the forces of the load on the pivots, as well as the forces indicated under a), b) and c) above.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, various embodiments of the chain.

Fig. 16 is a section taken along line 16--16 of the, FIG. 14; The fi-. 17 is a section showing u, link, of the type shown in FIGS. 1; 2 and 3, but with a high raceway.
The link shown in fi-. 1 to 3 comprises a part 1 forming a shoe, and in side walls or plates 2 curved upwards, so that the whole is sensibly in the shape of a U. Holes 3 and 4 are made in the side plates \ ?, for the connecting pins.
The holes 3 of the side plate \? are smaller than the holes 4. The side plates have cut parts forming openings 5, some parts of those cut being folded at right angles to the planes of the side plates so as to form stops 6 designated herein - after central stops. At each end of these side plates 7 are cleats 7 having two series of stops 8 and 9. The upper series of stops 8 is intended, in the closed position (fi '5), to come into engagement with the stops. central 6 adjacent links.
It will be noted that, in fig. 4, the engagement between the stops takes place at the surfaces indicated by <I> a., B, </I> c and d. The letters <I> a ', b', </I> <I> c ', d' </I> indicate the surfaces of the stops 6 which come into engagement with the adjacent links (not shown in the drawing). The movement of the links with respect to each other in the opposite direction is limited due to the engagement between the lower series of stopper 9 and the internal flats of the parts 1 forming the shoe of the links, as shown in FIG. 6. The contact points are, in this case, indicated by the letters B, C. The contact points of the adjacent links.
not shown, are indicated by the letters B ', C'. 10 indicates the pivots or the connecting pins. These journals are fitted with play in holes 4 and are drilled in hole 3.
The wheelbarrow shown in FIG. 7, which is generally designated by 11, has brackets 12 fixed to the main longitudinal bars 13, one or more oscillating arms 14 are mounted so as to be able to pivot in these brackets and carry discs 15 supporting the chain. indicated in 16, Line 17 indicates the outer line of a wheel which would correspond to the effect obtained by using the chain shown in 1G. The dimension of this wheel would be about three decimetres in diameter and 9 cm in width.
The side plates 2 shown in the fis. 8 to 13 are roughed out with brackets 18 projecting vertically. The cleats 18 on. one of the side plates of each link are bent outwardly at right angles to the plane of the side plates, as shown at 19, so as to form stops, the inner face 20 acting as the locking surfaces and are intended, -in the nesting position (fis. 12), to fit with the faces 21, stop -of adjacent links.
It will be noted that the abutment faces 20 and 21 are, more or less, radial with respect to the axes of the articulation pivots. They could also be radial.
The base parts or the support plates 1 .de each link have bucket piles 22 having abutment faces 23. Cutouts 24, whose edges 25 constitute the key stop faces, are also made in the base parts and are intended to mate with the corresponding cleats 22 of the adjacent links. While contact takes place between the faces 23 and 25, when the links are in the closed position, these stops operate, due to their wedge shape, so as to align each link with the next link.
These stops further act to prevent any tendency for the chain to bend sideways, which sometimes occurs in the construction shown. 1 to 6, when the vehicle on which the chain is mounted, makes a change of direction, that is to say that the links tend to place themselves at a clay relative to .l 'longitudinal axis of the adjacent link (s), which is only prevented by the pivots coming into operation or by the friction between the faces @de horizontal stop, this .dernier being insufficient in certain cases.
The fis. <B> 13 </B> represents a pivot or connecting pin and part of adjacent links -that it connects, passing through holes made in the side plates of the links. The pivots or connecting bolts and holes in the links, or these holes only, may be shaped such that the pivots or trunnions fit loosely in one of the two holes in the adjacent side plates and be forced into the other hole.
The effect of this arrangement is to allow, thanks to a hole having play, the absorption or prevention of slight inaccuracies in the interlocking surfaces, without causing any force on the pivot. The same result, at. The point of view, would be obtained if the two holes showed some play, but in this case the pivots would be subject, during use, to make noise and to wear, and the axis, of the pivot could forming an angle with the axis of its hole, which would also result in rapid excessive wear.
It is clear that a link built according to the fis. 1 to 113 is very simple to manufacture by stamping or stamping and can be stamped from a flat sheet metal. The links are all similar and arranged end to end to be assembled in uni, chenille.
The links represented at the fis. 14 to 16, comprise a plate 28 intended to come into contact with the ground and having a central part 29 raised forming the path on which the rollers roll.
It will be noted that the surface 29 is only slightly below the axes of the pivot holes. Raising the raceway to this point virtually eliminates the frictional effect that otherwise occurs when the links move from their angular position, around the rollers, to the closed or aligned position and this results in an increase in the useful life of the rollers, links and pivots.
The -holes of the pivots, shown at 30, are formed in side pieces 31 at each end of which there are cleats 32 in the form of a journal having faces 33 -de spherical stops.
It will be noted that the stops at the ends of each link are located inside the planes of the stops at the other end. Between the holes, pivots and on each side of the side pieces 31 are located. Trunnion-shaped cleats 34, tines to correspond to the end stops. These cleats 34 are hollowed out at their inner sides - so as to form spherical stop and interlocking faces 35, when the chain is in position. locking, to engage -with the stops 33.
The lateral stiffness, that is to say the resistance to a lateral curvature, which in the link shown in Figs. 8 to 13 is obtained by means of the vertical stops, is given by these spherical shaped stops.
The link shown in FIG. 17 com carries a part 1 intended to come into contact with the ground and provided with a plate 36 fixed by rivets 37 so as to form the raceway. If desired, instead of the plate 36, we can provide pieces of wood.
We can make the links of the. chain by stamping, or otherwise, from a piece obtained from a single sheet of material, 'without the help -d'no adjusting machine or perforator.
Such a method of manufacturing a chain not from a piece of soft steel sheet or another suitable metal may include the following operations: <B> 10 </B> roughing the metal so as to: to produce a roughly roughly the shape of a <B> I. </B> 20 cut .from the blank obtained according to 1 metal parts at the ends, of the <B> I, </B> so to .ménage holes for the connection pins or other similar member and also for the end stops.
30 bend the ends of the blank in the form of <B> I </B> obtained according to 2, at right angles to the rod of the <B> Y, </B> so as to form side plates , the rod of the I forming the scope of the link intended to come into contact with the ground.
40 stamp the metal parts of the ends of the <B> I, </B>. So that they form cleats projecting at a right angle with respect to the plane of the plates (the lateral ones and which act. central stop The end stops can be formed either when the metal is roughed according to 1, or they can be stamped during operation 2.
To allow operation 4 to be easily performed without tearing or thinning the metal at the ends of the central stops, more metal is stamped or cut at the ends of the <B> I </B> than it is not necessary to form the stops. This has the effect that the parts of the plate forming the stops can be rolled up into the required position without tearing, thinning, or breaking the metal, which would otherwise be risky. to arrive.
In step 4, it is preferred to effect the separation of the metal along a substantially U-shaped or three-sided profile, the notched side at the top of the U being near the edge of the side plate and forming the line. around which the metal is folded, to form the cleat, after the oa has rounded the vertical cutouts at their upper part, as can be seen in the drawing; to facilitate the folding operation.
The above sequence of operations need not necessarily be carried out in the order shown. In addition, some or all of the operations can be combined.
In the case of a link having vertical stops, those on the side plates can be formed during operation 2 by cutting parts of the metal in ends of the <B> I, </B> the metal being subsequently notched and folded out of one of the lateral plates, during operation 4, - so as to form, cleats to engage with 'the internal faces of the vertical cleats formed by the notched parts on the other side. The stops of the middle part intended to rest on the ground are also preferably formed by cutting the necessary metal during the operation.
