Description
Process for the production of non-splintering glass and non-splintering glass. It was found that non-splintering as can be produced by providing any shaped glass with a layer of polymerized organic compounds -d.
Polymerized organic compounds which have proven to be particularly suitable for this purpose are those which have good elasticity and resilience and are superior to the substances previously used for the manufacture of safety glass, for example polymerized acrylic acids.
The method can be carried out in such a way that polymers protrude onto the glass or else in such a way that non-polymerized, polymerizable compounds are applied to the glass, whereupon polymerization is carried out on the glass itself.
The polymerization can be carried out at different points, that is, before, during or after application or else in stages.
Instead of the polymers of uniform compounds, mixtures of polymers of several unsaturated organic compounds can also be used.
The unsaturated, polymerizable respectively. polymerized organic compounds can optionally be brought up in solutions and then the solvent can be partially or completely eliminated.
Adhesives and additives such as opacifiers, dyes, plasticizers, can be used with advantage, but are not absolutely necessary.
In some cases it is advisable to work at an elevated temperature.
It is sometimes advantageous to make the non-shattering glass at a pressure other than one atmosphere.
The new process makes it possible to produce extremely durable, non-splintering glass that can be cut in a similar way to ordinary glass.
Also noteworthy is the advantage that, according to the method described, arched respectively. curved glasses can be made.
<I> Example 1 </I> Methyl cinnamate is exposed to light between two glass plates until polymerization has occurred. The polymerization product creates a firm connection between the two plates. The sometimes occurring blistering is eliminated by pressing in the heat. <I> Example 2: </I> An approximately 0.4 mm thick plate of polymeric crotonic acid ethyl ester is placed between two glass plates and subjected to increased pressure for a short time in a press heated to <B> 90 "</B> exposed.
Example <I> 3: </I> Two bleach-sized 2 mm thick glass plates are each doused on one side with enough 20% solution of methyl acrylate in acetone that an approximately 0.2 mm thick film is formed on the glass plate after the solvent has evaporated .
The two glass plates are exposed to a suitable pressure with the film side against each other in a press heated to about 70 to 80 o until all air bubbles are removed.
