<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Glass substitutes, in particular for optical lenses.
Polymers of acrylic acid and its derivatives, with or without additives, provide plastics with a wide range of uses. In particular, their use as an intermediate layer in composite bodies for non-splintering glass and as a glass substitute has been indicated.
It has now been found that polymerization products of α-substituted homologues of aerylic acid of the general formula

Mixtures of finished polymers are used, for example 3 parts of polymethacrylic acid methyl ester and 2 parts of polyacrylic acid nitrile or polymethacrylic acid vinyl ester.
It is very advantageous to add a certain amount of polymeric compounds to the monomeric compound, to choose the polymerization temperature as low as possible and to add small amounts of catalyst, since otherwise the materials become easily vesicular.
The plastic can contain organic and / or inorganic additives, such as phthalic acid esters, which serve as plasticizers, and also resins, dyes and opacifiers.
The glass substitute can be produced or shaped by pouring out the solution and allowing the solvent to evaporate, by pressing the polymeric powder or the polymeric pieces, by spraying, by polymerizing the monomeric compound, etc. Polymers can be produced from the shape of the vessel in which they are polymerized.
The polymer can also be used as a coating for other, in particular translucent, materials, be it to give them greater hardness or to protect them from the effects of the weather.
Examples:
1. 100 parts of methyl methacrylate are mixed with 0'005 parts of benzoyl peroxide, deaerated by boiling or evacuation and polymerized to a glass-like mass by heating to 60-120 ° C.
Optical blanks in the form customary for silicate glass can be produced from this polymer by sawing and turning, and these can be processed into optical lenses by further grinding and polishing work.
2.90 parts of methyl methacrylate are mixed with 10 parts of butyl acrylate and, after venting, heated with the addition of 0.22 parts of benzoyl peroxide.
3. The procedure is as in Example 2, using 95 parts of ethyl methacrylate, 5 parts of dibutyl phthalate and 0.55 parts of benzoyl peroxide.
4. A plate made of ethyl polyacrylate, which has a rather sticky surface, is coated with a 10% strength solution of a copolymer of equal parts of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate in ethyl acetate or alcohol.
After the ethyl acetate has evaporated, a hard, non-tacky coating remains on the polyacrylic acid ethyl ester without impairing its flexibility.
