Process for the preparation of 6-Nitr o-Bzl-niethogybenzanr thron. The main patent no. 131359 describes a process for the preparation of Bzl-methoxybenzanthrone, in which benzantlirone, which contains a negative substituent in the Bzl position, is treated with methyl alcohol in the presence of alkaline agents.
It has now been found that 6-nitro-Bzl-methoxybenzanthrone, which is technically very important as an intermediate product for dye production, can also be reached in a smooth manner if 6-nitrobenzanthrone, which is in the Bzl position, is obtained contains negative substituents, treated with methyl alcohol in the presence of alkaline agents.
The substituent present in the Bzl position of the 6-nitrobenzanthrone can be, for example, a nitro, sulfo, sulfoxide, sulfone group, a halogen atom, etc. Alkali hydroxide and alkali carbonate, for example, may be mentioned as alkaline agents.
Since when using 6-Nitro-Bzl-Nitrobenzanthron nitrous acid salts arise, which can easily give rise to the formation of by-products due to their oxidizing effect, it is often expedient in this case to add substances to the reaction mixture which destroy the nitrous acid able to add, such as sodium sulfite, urea, etc.
The 6-nitro-Bzl-methoxybenzanthrone crystallizes in yellow needles that melt at 318; it dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a bluish red color without fluorescence, the color changes to red-yellow with the addition of a few drops of nitric acid, and brown-yellow fluorescence now appears. In low boiling organic solvents, it is quite difficult to dissolve with yellow color without fluorescence.
Example 1: 20 parts of 6-Bzl-dinitrobenzantbrone with a melting point of 266 are refluxed in dough form with 20 parts of caustic soda and 600 parts of methyl alcohol for about 40 hours. The brown product obtained after working up dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a purple-red color and can be purified by boiling with glacial acetic acid. The 6-nitro-Bzl-methoxyberzanthrone thus obtained is obtained in completely pure form by crystallization from nitrobenzene.
After being dissolved several times, it finally crystallizes in beautiful yellow needles that melt at 318.
Example 2: 10 parts of Bzl-chloro-6-nitroberrzarrthrorr with a melting point of 280-281 are heated with 10 parts of potash and 500 parts in a stirring bomb at 110 for 10 hours. The melt is boiled with water, whereupon the crude product separated in yellow crystals, which melts at 300-305, is sucked off.
By recrystallizing twice from nitrobenzene, the 6-nitro-Bzl-hydroxyberrzarrhron is obtained in pure form.
