Description

Process for the preparation of a water-soluble product starting from a mixture of fatty acids containing oleic acid. The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a water-soluble product starting from a mixture of fatty acids containing oleic acid. According to this process, said mixture is treated with alkaline hypochlorite in concentrated aqueous solution, in the proportion of 2 to 3 molecules of hypochlorite per one molecule of fatty acid, so as to obtain a product soluble in water, and having the faculty of making the most diverse organic compounds soluble in this liquid.

This product can be used in the textile industry for wetting, scouring, bleaching and dyeing - vegetable or animal fibers or other similar applications. .

This process can be carried out, for example, as follows. 70 kilograms of a mixture formed mainly of oleic acid are introduced into a vessel provided with a mechanical stirrer. The temperature of the product is raised to approximately 100 degrees centigrade and 140 kilograms of aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution containing 15 percent active chlorine are then gradually added. A very lively reaction first takes place, which subsides as the reagent is added.

After sufficient stirring to homogenize the mass, a liquid is obtained which changes on cooling. The product thus obtained gives clear and neutral solutions with hot water.

If we now introduce into the product thus obtained 14 kilos of sulfuric acid at 66 degrees Beaumé, previously diluted with water and then heated to complete the reaction, the modified fatty acid is released, it rises to the surface and is separated by decantation.

The proportions and titer of the reagents indicated are not absolute and may vary. When using bad-odor mixtures such as oils, fats and fatty acids from marine animals, these bodies lose their unpleasant odor during the treatment indicated above.
