A method of manufacturing a depilatory product. The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a depilatory material which, while exerting a rapid and effective action, does not in any way damage the hair or the skin. It is known that in the tannery, a milk of lime or an alkali sulphide is used for unstacking the skins, depending on whether it is mainly important to preserve the hair or the skin. The lime treatment, however, has the drawback of easily attacking the skins and requiring precautions to avoid carbonation of the reagent, while the sulphide treatment causes hair loss, which is inadmissible in many cases.
The present invention makes it possible to obtain a product which completely avoids the above drawbacks. According to the process which is the subject thereof, sodium sulphide is treated with steam under pressure and the product obtained is added with caustic soda and water. The product thus obtained is a stable liquid, which makes it possible to conclude that it is the result of a chemical combination and not of a simple mixture. On the other hand, its depilatory action is markedly different from that of its constituents, because not only are neither the skin nor the hair attacked, but the action is so gentle that the product can be applied to living animals, or even to human skin without giving rise to the slightest inconvenience.
By way of example, the process according to this invention can be carried out as follows: The commercial concentrated sodium sulfide is placed in a completely hermetic autoclave provided with a pressure gauge and a vapor outlet valve. Water vapor is added until a liquid mass is obtained. If the pressure inside the autoclave is too strong, the steam can be released slowly. Industrial sodium sulphide contains impurities, in particular iron sulphate and sodium hyposulphite, the presence of which appears to be favorable to dissolution. It should be noted that the product cannot be wet; it dissolves by the unique effect of the steam due to preferably employed at a pressure of 4.5 atmospheres minimum.
At the outlet of the apparatus, the collected material is black, at this time 1% o of terpinolene or similar bodies is added, that is to say a solvent obtained from the distillation of maritime pine or of plants. alike.
The liquid obtained is left to settle in tanks.
After settling for 24 hours, the product obtained passes through a very tight filter, then falls into another tank, where it is mixed with caustic soda to the same degree Bé as the liquid obtained and in an amount equal to said liquid.
Everything is filtered again, because at this time a slight green precipitation occurs, which could color the skins. Then we concentrate the liquid which weighs at this time from 14 to 2011 Bé, in anticorrosive metal cauldrons. These cauldrons, fitted with mechanical stirrers, are heated to a concentration of 50 / o. At this moment the crystallization takes place, then the crystals are drained in a centrifugal apparatus. Once this is done, they can be delivered to the store.
For its use in tannery, it is necessary to dissolve the crystals in lukewarm water, then baths varying from 40 0 Bé to 0.010 are formed. In fact, the degree varies according to whether the tanner works salty or exotic skins and according to whether he works calf or beef skin. It should be noted that while the skins must be well re-green before soaking them in the baths.
Experiments have shown that the addition of a small quantity of calcium, barium or strontium hydrate in the depilatory baths prepared by means of the aforementioned product gives particularly appreciable results and superior to any other. When the depilatory product in question has been put in the form of crystals, tanners or industrialists treating the skin in general, can easily constitute baths and incorporate therein a variable amount of calcium hydrate, bar; Yirm or strontium according to the nature of the skin to be treated.
The baths obtained do not lose their concentration, even if hundreds of skins are treated in them. The duration of soaking in the baths can vary from 2 to 48 hours depending on the quality of the skin.
Then the skins can be completely depilated and the hair preserved. The skin is purged of its fatty impurities and becomes flaky more easily, swelling is also obtained. Some tanners wanting to obtain neutral hides, it suffices to immerse them, after treatment, in a weak acid bath.
This product may be suitable for all industrial uses such as the treatment of the skins of rabbits, sheep skins, ponytails, etc., and as has been said above, it can also be used with advantage in the care. toiletries, for the removal of excess hair from the human body. It is however understood that the proportions indicated above can be varied according to the needs; thus for example, for the treatment of the human body, or of luxury skins, the proportion of caustic soda can be reduced.
