La came 206 (fig.
Automatic platen press feeder. This invention relates to an automatic feed device for a platen press, for example of the type of the well known Chandler & Price press.
In this device, the members which serve to bring the sheets to the platen and those which serve to remove them are mounted so as to form an assembly, which can itself be mounted in a single block on the frame of the press. , their control being effected by mechanical connection with control members of other parts of the press.

In the various figures, the front of the press is marked 1 and the rear 2 in order to realize the position of the various parts and mechanisms. The front of the press is where the operator usually stands while feeding the press, while the form is located at the rear.
As regards the press itself, only the outline has been shown, since this press is a machine well known in the industry. The press frame is designated as 3, the motor shaft as 4. 5 is the platen pivot or oscillation shaft, 6 is the platen and 7 the form. 5 and 10 denote the usual connecting rods, 11 the plate locking cam. 12 (fi g. 7) designates the large driving wheel of the press. 13 is the release device and 14 is the release lever. All these parts, their construction and their operation are well known to those skilled in the art and do not require any additional description or representation.
The paper 15 to be printed is placed in a paper box comprising a bottom 16 and two adjustable sides 17, 17. The paper box is suitably fixed on the inclined feed table 18 which rests on suitable side brackets 19 and 20 fixed. to frame 3 of the press. The feed table is arranged to be elevated away from the supports 19 and 20 and to pivot to one side to allow the press to be fed manually or for other purposes.
The feed table pivots around a vertical axis by titi of its angles at 21 on a support 22 which itself pivots around the horizontal axis at 23 siir- a vertical part 24 of the lateral coirole 19. A l 'using the levers 25 and 26 linked together and a net control 27, we can rotate the table upwards around the pivot 23 so as to raise it away from the supports, after which we small rotate it to one side around pivot 21.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 14, it can be seen that the sides 17 of the paper box are fixed to collars 29 which can slide and are adjustable on titi tubular shaft 30 supported in fixed vertical bearings 31 and 32 quickly adapting them to the width of the paper. The posterior and anterior edges of the paper are placed against corner stops 33, 33 (Fig. 10) and against a curved rear stop 34.
Each angle stop comprises a console 3: ï mounted in an adjustable manner on a fixed cleat 36 by means of a violin screw 37. The console 35 has an inclined tab 38 against which is placed the angle of the sheet of paper. The angled tabs prevent the sheet of paper from sliding backward over the stopper 34, but the tab does not constitute an obstacle to separating the top sheet from the stack because it simply occupies a tilted position against the edges of the paper.
When printing on heavy paper or cardboard, it is desirable to provide means for detaching the next second sheet or sheet from the top sheet when the top sheet is removed from the stack, since some fairly thick sheets tend to join.
For this purpose, angle stops such as those shown in FIGS. 11 and 12 can be used. These stops replace the stops 33 and consist of a console 40 mounted in an adjustable manner on the cleat 36. The detachment member 41 pivots at 42 in a slot 43 of the console and is held in the normal position (fig. 12) against a gou fixed pillar 44 using a spring 45.
The peeler member is placed on top of the stack 46. When the top sheet is raised, the peeler member is pushed back into the console in antagonism to the action of the spring 45 to allow the top sheet to be lifted. better to pass. However, in the elevation of the top sheet, this sheet flexes or curves slightly but enough so that its edge receives a smooth sliding motion relative to the second sheet.
Therefore; the edge of the latter is exposed slightly but sufficiently to allow the detaching member to descend elastically on said edge and to detach the second sheet from the upper sheet.
The top sheet is separated from the stack and brought to the stage by suction nozzles. Two nozzles are used and it will suffice to describe one (fig. 9 and 9).
Each nozzle is formed by a small frame 50 which has a duct 51 communicating at one of its ends with a flexible pipe 52, while its lower end is provided with a suction cup 53. The nozzle pivots at 54 between the lower cheeks 55 of a nozzle holder yoke 56 which is slidably mounted on a support 57. The support 57 is provided with guide projections 58, and the rod of the yoke 56 moves between these projections. Normally, the yoke and the nozzle occupy the positions shown to the right or to the front of fig. 91.
It will be noted that the yoke occupies its lowest position relative to the support 57 because this yoke and the nozzle descend by their own weight, aided by the force of a compression spring 59 interposed between the support and the yoke. A stop 60 located at the upper end of the yoke limits the lowering movement by abutting against one of the projections 58. A tension spring 61 is disposed between the stop 60 and a screw 62 fixed to the nozzle. The spring 61 tends to make the nozzle pivot around its pivots 54 each time it is put in a position to perform this movement.
In fig. 9, the nozzle is shown on the left above the sheet of paper, in the removal position and, in fig. 92, the nozzle is shown in the dispensing position.
By means which will be described later, the nozzles are brought down on the sheet in such a way that the nozzle and its yoke run smoothly upwards on the support 57, which compresses the spring 59 and contracts the spring 61. In this position, suction is applied and the nozzle removes the top sheet. Immediately afterwards, the nozzle is moved away from the stack with the top sheet which it has separated from that stack.
As the nozzle is lifted away from the stack, spring 59 acts to lower this nozzle relative to support 57, and at the same time, spring 61 causes it to pivot, forcing the edge front of the split sheet 65 to curl upwardly to help separate the sheet from the stack. The sheet is then transported by the nozzle to the plate and, when it occupies the corrective distribution or deposit position to the right of FIG. 9, the vacuum is removed in the nozzle and the sheet falls on the transfer table 66, from where it slides on the plate.
The transfer table 66 is a perforated frame pivoting on a shaft 67 in consoles 68 fixed to the feed table 18 (Figs. 7, 8, 9 and 14). Table 66 is raised and lowered in synchronism with the platen movements (fig. 7 and 8) by a system of levers 69 and 70. When the feeding apparatus is to be brought to the side by pivoting, the table transfer belt is raised away from lever 70 and can be deposited above the infeed table. However, all this is only for the purpose of understanding how the sheet is supported before being deposited on the platen.
The means for actuating the suction nozzles are as follows: The supports 5 7 are fixed to a shaft 72 by locking screws 73. The shaft 72 is square (fig. 14) and provided with cylindrical ends 74, 74 thanks to which this shaft pivots in pivoting arms 75 and 76 arranged titi on each side of the feed table. The arms pivot on the aforementioned shaft 67. The upper ends of the arms are connected by titi tube 77 and a bar 78. The assembly of the voting pi arms and their connecting members form an oscillating nozzle carriage which is used to actuate the nozzles as shown in fig. 7, 8 and 9.
This carriage is actuated as follows: Outside the arm 75, the shaft 72 carries titi arm 79 on which pivots a rod 80, which is in turn connected by a short arm 81 to the shaft 67. The arms 75, 79, 81 and link 80 form substantially a parallelogram serving to properly oscillate the shaft 72 of the nozzles in order to position the nozzles exactly relative to the paper.
For this purpose, on the shaft 72 is adjustably wedged a nozzle stop 82 (fig. 9) with a spring 83 which tends to move said stop and shaft 72 in the direction of clockwise. looking at fig. 9, one end of the spring bearing against the stopper and the other being fixed to the arm 75.
In other words, the spring 83 tends at all times to rotate the shaft 72 in the direction of clockwise movement, that is to say by bringing the nozzles towards the paper, and, by Consequently, the spring also acts so as to make the other three sides of the parallelogram descend to the right of, fig. 7 until the lower end of the link 80 comes to rest against an adjustable stop 84 fixed to the feed table.
Referring again to fig. 9, it can be seen that the nozzle stop 82 is brought into contact with a stop 85 carried in an adjustable manner by the aforesaid connecting rod 78 using a locking screw 86.
By comparing Figs. 7, 8 and 9 and referring to the above description, it can be seen that the nozzle carriage is moved from a removal position, located above the paper, to a dispensing position, located above the transfer table and the stage; that the position of the nozzles in the release position is determined by the position of the nozzle stop 82 against the stopper 85.
In other words, the stroke or movement of the nozzle carriage being fixed, as will be described later, the positions of the nozzles, independent of this stroke, can nevertheless be determined and adjusted exactly by the stop 85 and stop 84 because, in the removal position, the nozzles are moved to the left by the spring 83 until they are stopped by 85; and, in the dispensing position of FIG. 7, the nozzles have been moved to the right thanks to the action of the stop 84 on the rod 80. To better understand these elements of the invention, the arms 79 and 81 and the rod 80 are shown in dotted lines in their extreme positions in fig. 9.
The nozzle trolley is operated as follows: On the arm 75 of the trolley swivels at 88 (fig. 7, 8 and 14) united rod 89 which swings on the other hand on an arm 90 fixed to a shaft or short axis 91 mounted in a fixed bearing 92. On the outer end of the shaft 91 is fixed another short arm 93 provided with a pin 94. On the aforementioned side bracket 19 is suitably fixed a bearing element s 'extending upwards 95 on which pivots at 96 an elbow lever 97.
This lever is connected by a rod 98 to titi aie 99 which connects the lower end of the rod 10 of the form to the large toothed wheel 12 of the press. On the short arm 100 of the angled lever 97 a hooked arm 101 pivots which carries a pivoting elastic lock 102 normally locking the hooked arm 101 to the arm 100. It follows that when the axis 99 turns with the toothed wheel 12, the aforesaid levers, links and arms are actuated as shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 to oscillate the nozzle carriage and activate it.
It will be noted that the control links between the toothed wheel 12, that is to say the movable member of the press, and the nozzle carriage are eliminated when the elastic latch 102 is released, this having the aim of allowing to the elements carried by the feed table to move with it when this table is raised and brought to one side, while the hooked arm is simply redeposited on the element 100 of the angled lever 97 which, when the apparatus of feeder was placed laterally by pivoting, runs empty on pivot 96.
Suction is applied to the nozzles by the following device. On the aforesaid bearing 95 pivots 105 a suction air pump 106 whose piston rod 107 is connected to the aforesaid axis 99 of the connecting rod. A flexible air pipe 108 from the pump goes to a distribution box 109. A pipe 110 goes from this box to the tube 77 carried by the nozzle carriage and to which the flexible tubes 52 of the nozzles are connected in the above manner. described. As the tube 77 pivots with the nozzle carriage, a flexible connection such as 111 (fig. 14) is interposed on the tube 110.
Another pipe 112, also shown in FIG. 14, goes from the distribution box 109 to a blowing nozzle 113 fixed to the rear edges of the sheets and delivering a set of air to better separate them.
In fig. 19 and 20, it can be seen that the distribution box 109 comprises three valves arranged as follows. Beginning with the aforesaid pipe 108 from the pump a conduit ends in a valve chamber 114 enclosing a ball forming a valve 115 controlling a second conduit 116 which ends in a valve chamber 117 controlled by a valve 118. This valve valve is fixed to an angled lever 119 pivot 120 and actuated by a link 121 pivoting at 122 on the aforementioned link born 89 which actuates the nozzle carriage. The pivot 122 is adjustable, for example by means of means 123 (FIG. 7).
A spring 124 maintains the valve 118 normally applied to its seat. Above valve 115 is a third conduit 125 extending from chamber 114 and terminating in a third valve chamber 126 below a ball forming valve 127 disposed in this chamber. The third pipe 112 from the distribution box communicates with the chamber 126 above the valve 127.
The operation is as follows: The suction stroke of the pump is adjusted to create a vacuum in the suction nozzles when the latter are in position to remove a sheet of paper, the air being sucked into the pump and returning to it by the flexible pipes 52, the tube 77, the pipe 110, the duct 116 of the distribution box, the valve chamber 114 (the ball 115 being raised by the suction) and the flexible pipe 108 At the same time, the suction acts through the duct 125 so as to apply the ball 127 on its seat to prevent the suction from acting on the blowing nozzle 113.
During the suction stroke, the rod 121 slides empty on the angle valve lever 119, and the valve 118 remains closed (fig. 8).
When the nozzles have removed a sheet and brought it to the dispensing position (fig. 7), the vacuum in the system is removed by opening the valve 118 through the connecting rod 121. This takes place at the start. of. the compression stroke during which the air discharged by the pump is sent through the flexible pipe 108 to the valve chamber 114, which applies the ball 115 on its seat, and also passes through the duct 125 on the ball 127 that it raises, to then go through the pipe 112 to the blowing nozzle 113.
It can thus be seen that the operation consisting in separating the top sheet from the stack is fully automatic and that the valve box regulates the air currents both in the suction stroke and in the compression or blowing stroke of the stack. the pump. It can also be seen that the breaking of the vacuum in the suction nozzles is effected automatically and can be adjusted and re-spun exactly to occur at any point while the nozzles come to occupy the dispensing position.
Means are provided for making the press inactive when, for some reason, the suction nozzles have failed to remove a sheet. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, it can be seen that the form 7 is connected in the usual way to an eccentric shaft 130 by means not shown. 131 is an arm fixed to the shaft and connected by a connecting rod 132 to another arm 133 fixed to a shaft 134. The latter carries a split arm 135. 136 designates a pin moving in the slot of the arm 135. The pin 136 is attached to a locking arm 137 mounted on a second shaft 138.
Outside the frame, the shaft 138 carries an arm 139 connected by a connecting rod 140 to the release lever 14 pivots at 141a. The above is the description of the release mechanism of the well known Chandler & Price press.
When the lever 14 is moved to the left in fig. 1 by the operator to disengage the press, the shaft 138 rotates counterclockwise. Shaft 134 rotates clockwise. Link 132 rises and rotates arm 131 to rotate eccentric shaft 130 so as to prevent the form from contacting the platen when the press is turned off.
Automatic means are provided for actuating the lever 14 in order to make the press inactive, these means being shown in FIGS. 1 to 6 inclusive and fig. 14 to 16. Reference will first be made to FIGS. 1 and 16. The lever 14 is provided with two headed pins 140 'and 141 which support a latch 142 constituted by a flat and thin piece of metal having a handle 143 at its upper end and a cam 144 at its lower end. The latch 142 is maintained in the normal inactive position which it occupies FIG. 1 by the pin 140 passing through an L-slot 145.
At its lower end, the latch 142 has a rectilinear slot 146 through which passes the lower pin 141. The latch 142 is folded as seen at 147 (Fig. 16) to form between itself and the lever 14. a pocket 148 in which slides a lever 149 pivoting at -130 on the form, on the outside thereof. The lever 149 is provided with a hook 150.
Normally, the lever 149 moves with the form, slides back and forth alternately in pocket 148 and is prevented from engaging with the lower pin 141 because this lever slides on the cam 14.1. Means, which will be described later, are provided for pushing the latch 142 so as to release it from the upper pin 140 ', this latch then sliding downward until the upper edges of the two slots 145 are reached. , 146 come to rest on the pins 140 'and 141.
Under these conditions, the pin 141 is exposed, and during the stroke of the form backwards (to the left in fig. 1), the hook 150 of the lever 149 catches on the lower pin 141 and pulls lever 14 to the left as far as the disengaged position, exactly as if this lever had been moved by hand. The automatic disengaging device acts to release the latch 142 from the action of the pin 1.10 'to allow the lever 149 to engage with the lever 14 and to actuate this lever when the suction nozzles are not fail to remove a .sheet.
Reference will be made to FIGS. 3 to 6. The aforesaid tube 30 located above the paper box in the fixed consoles 31, 32 contains a second tube or hollow shaft 152, the end of which adjacent to the console 32 carries a handle 153. Below of the shaft 152, the handle 153 has a hook 154. A fixed bearing 155 is attached to the console 32 in which the axis of an angled lever is journalled at 156, the branches or arms of which are located in two different planes. One of them 157 extends under the handle 1) 3 and has a stop notch 158.
The other arm, placed outside the infeed table (fig. 14), extends downwards and carries a pin 160. The elbow lever 1: ï7, 159 is held in its normal inactive position ( fig. 1) by a spring 161 which keeps the arm 157 raised against a pin 162 of the aforesaid bearing 155, this spring consequently also maintaining the pin 160 of the arm 159 against or in contact with the handle 143 of the latch 142 (fig. 1). ).
The arm 159 of the angled lever is connected by a connecting rod 163 to a single arm 164 extending upward. this arm being provided with a hook 165. The arm 16.1 pivots on the shaft 67. On the arm 76 of the nozzle carriage pivots on the bar 78 a cylinder 166 which is a very small cylinder provided with a piston, not shown. , to which is attached a rod 167. The rod 167 pivots at 168 on a hooking lever 169 pivoting at 170 on the arm 76. The lever 170 and the piston rod 167 are kept normally lowered. on a stop pin 171 thanks to a spring 172 bearing against bare pin 173 of the lever 169. The lever 169 is provided with a hook 174 arranged to engage with the aforesaid hook 165.
To the shaft 67 is fixed near the arm 164 of the cam 175 located in the path of the pin 173 moving with the arm 76 of the nozzle nozzle.
Around the tube or shaft 152 is wound (fig. 4) a spring 176 which acts on the handle 153 (fig.5) and tends to turn this handle and the shaft clockwise. of a watch by looking at fig. 3 and 5, which keeps hook 154 in engagement with the notch end 158 of arm 157 of crank lever 157, 159. A pin 177 (Fig. 5) restricts movement of handle 153.
Referring now to Figs. 7, 14 and 15, it can be seen that the opposite end of the hollow shaft 152 carries an arm 130 which is provided with a pin 181 arranged to engage with the angled valve holder lever 119.
The operation of the automatic disengagement device is as follows: Referring to fig. 3, it is seen that during normal operation, when the nozzle carriage pivots from the stack of sheets of paper to the platen, the hook 174 of the hook lever 169 should engage with the hook 165 of the arm 164, move this arm to the left and, through the connecting rod 163, actuate the elbow lever 157, 159 to actuate the latch 142 and make the press inactive.
However, this does not take place because, when the suction is applied to the nozzles, it is also applied to the cylinder 166 by a flexible pipe 183 connecting this cylinder to the hollow rod 77 (fig. 3) from which it follows that the pistou and its rod 167 are pulled upwards and the hook 174 is moved upwards away from the hook 165, so that the latter and. the arm 164 do not move, so the press is not made inactive. On the other hand, when the suction nozzles have failed to remove a sheet, no vacuum, of course, is created in the piping between the pump 106 and the nozzles nor in the cylinder 166.
Consequently, the piston rod 167 does not rise, the hook lever 169 does not rise, and when the nozzle carriage pivots towards the stage (to the left in fig. 3), the hook 174 engages hook 165 and causes the latter to move to the left with arm 164. Consequently, link 163 actuates elbow lever 157, 159, pin 160 pushes latch 142 and disengages its pins, and hook lever 149 engages lower pin 141 and makes the press inactive.
However, at the same time that the arm 159 of the elbow lever is moved backwards as described above, the arm 157 descends as shown in FIG. 5 until the stop notch end 158 comes to rest on the pin 162. It follows that the spring 176 is free to move the handle 153 inwards and bring it to the above arm 157 as shown. In other words, when the automatic disengagement takes place, the handle 153 and the hollow shaft 152 oscillate or are moved automatically so that, at the other end of the shaft, the. pin 181 can actuate valve arm 119 to permanently open valve 118.
As the nozzle carriage continues its rearward movement, pin 173 mounts on fixed cam 175 to raise hook 171 and disengage it from the other hook 165 (Fig. 6).
In summary, when the nozzles fail to remove a sheet, the lever 169 remains in its lower position, the two hooks 174 and 165 momentarily engage; long enough to activate the angled lever 157, 159. This lever then causes the operation of the release device and also causes the permanent rupture of the vacuum by opening the valve 118 as long as allows the machine to remain inactive.
If the machine is allowed to remain idle, the press will obviously continue to operate, but the nozzles will not remove any leaves, and as the nozzle carriage alternately oscillates in one direction and shout in the opposite direction, the two hooks 174 and 165 will go into gear momentarily each time, but nothing will happen. After having corrected the disturbance, the lever 153 is moved backwards, that is to say the hook 154 of this lever is brought back to the position of FIG. 3, and the bent lever 157, 159 immediately takes up its normal position (fig. 3) under the action of the spring 161, the parts then again occupying their normal working positions.
The operator can then return the lever 14 to its normal position while, at the same time, he lifts the lock 142 by hand so as to replace it on the pins 140 and 141.
With respect to the disengaging mechanism, or) will notice that while the press is inactive, the hook lever 149 continues to slide alternately in one direction and in the reverse direction on the cam 144, but ire determines no further movement of the lever 14 since 'he has already brought the latter to the disengagement position. In addition, of course, it will be noted that when the lever 153 is operated to return the release device to its normal position, the pin 181 moves away from the valve lever 119 and the valve 118 is moved. closes under the action of its spring.
The disengaging mechanism is then ready to operate in the event that, for some reason, the nozzles do not produce the removal of a sheet.
In transporting the sheet from the infeed table to the transfer table (Fig. 9) the body of the sheet is supported and prevented from falling by a support lip 185 which is conveniently attached to the aforesaid shaft 67. The sheet is then placed on the plate and printed. After printing, the sheet is gripped by the receiving gripper which is constructed and operates as follows. Reference will firstly be made to FIG. 17. Under the table 18 are suitably supported two rods 190, 190. The clamp carriage 191 slides on these rods, which therefore have the role of supporting the clamp mechanism. The gripper carriage 191 slides on the rods 190 by means of a suitable guide support 192.
The latter carries a latch 193 arranged to engage with a sliding bearing 194 which moves on a rod 195 fixed to the frame 19. The sliding bearing has a recess 196 and ramps or cams 197, 197. This bearing also comprises a slideway lower 198 (fig. 18).
In the slide 198 moves a roller 200 provided at the end of an arm 201. This arm is fixed to an oscillating shaft 202 (fig. 1) which is actuated by a short arm 203 and by a rod 204 connected at 205. to a slotted cam 206, the latter being actuated by a pin 207 which connects the connecting rod 9 to the locking cam 11 of the plate. The cam 206 properly pivots on the frame 20 and 208, all as shown in FIG. 1.
It follows that, whatever the position of the clamp carriage with respect to the bearing 194 when the latter begins to move, the carriage will come to be placed under the guide support 192. The lock carried by this support will be gently raised by one of the ramps 197 and will fall into the recess 196, which will reestablish the coupling between the gripper carriage and its control member, that is to say the bearing 194.
This provision for detachably coupling the gripper carriage to the control bearing is necessary, since it should be remembered that, at certain times, the gripper carriage is removed from the frame when the feed apparatus is raised. - Rely to its pivoting to the side in the manner described. During operation of the press, and while the feed apparatus is out of the way, the bearing 194 performs a reciprocating movement on its rod 195 by means of the device described, and it may or may not be placed exactly below the support 192 when the infeed table is again brought into position.
However, the device which has just been described ensures the automatic reestablishment of the exact coupling of the gripper carriage with its control member.
When the feed table is brought to the side, the gripper carriage is pulled forward under the table so as to bring the gripper mechanism out of the way to prevent damage. This is done by a drive tab 210 which slides on a rod 211 mounted on the feed table. The cleat is connected by a cable 212 to the lever 2: 5 (fig. 7). When the lever is rotated down to raise the table, the tab is pulled back and engages the support 192, which has the effect of bringing this support and the clamp mechanism to the front edge of the table. the feed table.
The curvature of cam 206 is arranged to provide a fairly smooth movement of the clamp carriage as it moves toward the platen, but a steep take-off motion immediately after the clamp grips the paper. At the end of the backward movement there is a noticeable slowing down, so that when the clamp opens, the paper is easily ejected from said clamp. The ejection device will be explained in relation to the gripper device. The clamp device will now be described with reference to FIGS. 21 to 25.
On the clip carrier 191 is fixed. In an adjustable manner using a violin screw 215 a clip holder console. This console (fig. 25) comprises a base element 216 provided with guide fingers 217 and 218 by which the console is guided on the carriage. This console is also provided at the rear and on one side with a guide 219 in which moves a slide 220 comprising an adjustable head 221 constituted by a screw. By adjusting the screw, the slide can be lengthened or shortened.
The slider pivots at 223 on an angled lever 224 which in turn pivots at 225 on an arm extending outward from the guide 2 19. The angled lever 224 carries to l one of its ends a finger 226 extending upwards and serving to lock the clamp.
A spring 227 secured to the elbow lever and to the clamp holder console tends to pull the elbow lever towards the locking position of the clamp when the latter is open as shown in FIG. 21, and this spring also tends to cause the slide 220 to move outwardly from the guide 219 and to bring it to the rear of the clamp carriage or to the left of FIGS. 21.-25. The slide and the pivot 223 of the bent lever are limited in their movement by stops 228 formed by cutting the guide at this point.
The clamp itself has an upper jaw, a lower jaw, and a sheet ejector and clamp opener. The lower jaw 230 is a long flat piece ending at the rear with a knife 231. Throughout its length, the jaw 230 is split as seen in 232. It also has two gou guide pillars 233 extending upward. At its front end (to the right on the sins), the lower jaw carries a bearing 234 in which the axis 235 of an elbow lever 236 journals.
This lever carries an opener roller 237 and is connected at 238 to a gripper opener and sheet ejector 239 constituted by a thin vertical slide which lies in the slot 232 of the lower jaw. The slider 239 is bent 240 'to match the shape of the lower jaw and, at a point between its ends, this slider carries a clamp opener cam 240..
An upper clamp jaw 241 is pivotally supported by bearing 234 at 242. The upper jaw is located above the lower jaw and, like the latter, terminates in a tapered edge 243. The upper jaw is also split from one end of its length to the other, as seen at 244 and has an opening or slit 245. On one side, the upper jaw is cut obliquely on its underside, as seen at 246 This jaw further has two holes through which the pins 233 project out. 247 is a spring carried by a pin 248 fixed to the lower jaw. 249 is a spring which tends to move the roller 237 upwards.
As shown in the drawings, the upper and lower jaws occupy the spaces between the fingers 217 and 218. The ejector and opener slide 239 is placed between the two jaws, its cam 240 protruding towards the front. up through the opening 245. This member is maintained in the retracted position which it occupies in FIG. 21 by the spring 249 which tends to cause the elbow lever 236 to pivot upwards. In fig. 21, the spring 247 tends to close the upper jaw on the lower jaw, but this closure is prevented by the locking finger 226 which engages under the lower recess 246 of the upper jaw.
It will be noted here that the rusting worm finger keeps the upper jaw locked in the open position regardless of the position of the clamp on the clamp holder console because the lower face of the recess 246 is parallel to the jaw. "lower, and it follows that the opening of the jaws is invariable. During the operation of the press, the clamp is moved into the open position towards the platen, and the lower jaw passes under the printed sheet carried by the press. When the clamp reaches the stage, the head 221 of the slider 220 strikes the stage with a sudden shock. This pushes the slider back and projects the elbow lever 224 outwards, as seen in fig. 23.
It follows that the action of the spring 247 no longer meets any resistance and promptly closes the clamp to grip the printed sheet. The positions occupied by the parts when the clamp is closed are shown in fig. 22 and 23. The gripper then moves to the right or forwards with the printed sheet until the moment when the roller 237 comes into contact with a gripper opener cam 250 passing under this cam (fig. 17). This lowers the roller 237 and, through the angled lever 236, the collet opener 239 is pushed to the left, causing the cam 240 to raise the upper jaw.
The locking finger 226 then engages elastically on the face 246 of the recess and keeps the clamp open. However, when the opener slider 239 moves to the left, at the same time it necessarily pushes the sheet out of the gripper, so that this sheet is suitably fed under the feed table. The ejector is advantageous because the rapid removal movement of the paper away from the platen necessarily impart a forward pulse to the paper which tends to hold the paper firmly in the gripper. The ejector positively releases the paper from the gripper jaws.
The gripper, now open and held open by the locking finger 226, moves rearward where it is ready to grip the next printed sheet.
As regards the control of the clamp, the following will be noted. The cam 206 (fig. 1) is set so that it communicates a rapid initial movement to the gripper during the latter removal stroke with a slight stop at the end of the stroke, so that the The ejector slide may have time to eject the paper from the clamp. It will further be noted that the entire operation is automatic. The clamp closes by coming into contact with the plate as in fig. 22 and 23, and opens as a result of the operation (lowering) of the roller 237 as in fig. 24.
The clamp is positively held in the open position by the locking finger 226 and in the closed position by the res out 247. The opening moment is adjusted by adjusting the cam 250 by means of a screw clamp. and slot. The closing moment is adjusted by adjusting the screw 221 of the slide.
As regards the gripper (s) (one or more can be used) and the disengaging mechanism, means are provided to make the press inactive in the event that the gripper does not succeed in gripping a sheet. For this purpose, in the slots of the upper clamp key jaw pivot at 252 two pawls 253, 253. Each pawl comprises a head 254 loaded with a weight and a shank 255. When the clamp is open (fig. 21), the pawls pawls 253 are inclined towards the end of the clamp, as shown, due to gravity and rest on a pin 256. When the clamp closes on a sheet (fig. 22), the pawls are projected upwards and become inactive.
In other words, when the gripper grips a sheet, the tails 255 are lowered. If the gripper does not grip a leaf, these tails rise automatically as in fig. 21 when the clamp leaves the plate (fig. 3). This slight oscillating movement of the pawls is used to actuate the release mechanism whenever necessary.
Suspended between the sheet stack and the stage is a trigger member 260 which is a piece of thin metal extending across the feeder (Figs. 1, 3, 4, 9 and 14). This member is fixed to a shaft 261. At one of its ends, on the release side of the press, the shaft 261 carries an arm 262 extending upwards, which arm is connected by a connecting rod = lette 263 with a hooked arm 264 pivoting on the aforementioned bearing 155 (fig. 3 and 5). The arm 264 is normally hooked on a pin 265 attached to a finger 266 carried by a shaft 267 which is located inside the hollow shaft 152 in the tube 30. The shaft 267 also carries a handle 268.
On the other end of the shaft is fixed an arm 269 provided with a pin 270 (fig. 7). The pin 265 is held under the hooked arm 264 by a spring 271 (fig.3).
The operation is as follows: If the clamp grips a sheet as in fig. 9, the tails 255 of the clicks 253 remain lowered and, in the sheet withdrawal stroke, pass under the trigger member 260 without touching it. If the forceps fail to grip a leaf as in fig. 3, the tails 255 rise and, during said stroke, strike the trigger member 260. Therefore, the shaft 261 oscillates slightly and, through the link 263, the hooked arm 264 is brought to. away from pin 265, causing shaft 267 to rotate slightly by spring 271.
This movement is sufficient to determine the opening of the valve 118 of the valve box by the pin 270 provided at the other end of the shaft. Of course, this cuts off the vacuum in the suction nozzles, and this condition having been fulfilled, the press will be put out of action as described previously with regard to the disengagement mechanism. The re-establishment of normal conditions is achieved by moving the two levers 268 and 153 to their position. initial normal.
The reason why we adopt this indirect way of activating the disengaging mechanism when the clamp does not succeed. to deliver the sheet resides in the fact that it is not practical to construct a disengagement member governed by the gripper which is sufficiently robust to directly exert traction on the disengagement device at 159 so as to push the latch 142 away from lever 14. It will also be noted that the disengaging mechanism of a platen press is a delicate device which, nevertheless, must be arranged and constructed to act instantaneously whenever disturbances occur. requiring disengagement. These aims have been achieved by the aforementioned release device.
Fig. 13 shows another form of suction nozzle 290, the lower surface 291 of which is curved at right angles to the leading edge of the sheet. This is of particular advantage when it comes to separating sheets of heavy paper by producing an upward curve at the edge and determining a sliding movement of the top sheet relative to the next sheet.
As is known, there are already in the industry numerous automatic feed devices for platen presses, but these provisions usually require that the frame of the press be drilled in order to secure numerous consoles, links and the like thereto. parts in order to regulate and synchronize the operation of the power supply apparatus, various parts being fixed independently of the others on this frame. Referring to fig. 1, it can be seen that the members for bringing the sheets to the plate and those for removing them are mounted on the feed table and the consoles 19 and 20, the table itself being carried by these latter, so as to constitute an assembly which can itself be assembled in a single block on the frame of the press.
It then suffices, to ensure the actuation of the supply members and the sheet withdrawal members, to place the pin 207 in the slot of the cam 206 and to connect the connecting rods 98 and 107 to the axis 99, on the connecting rod 10 of the press. Automatic disengagement is ensured by weaving the hooked arm 149 at the end of the shaft 130. The lifting levers placed at 70 and 69 require a very small reach on the oscillating shaft of the platen. It is therefore clear that this feed apparatus can be assembled on consoles 19 and 20 like a complete assembly in itself and then be connected to the press very easily and quickly.
There are no heavy parts in this power supply apparatus which must be actuated by the press and which would be liable to increase the load. In addition, it will be appreciated that all the parts are very accessible and can be adjusted quickly and conveniently.
