épousant la forme de l'intérieur du piston cloche 15 et la paroi interne 13 épousant 1 forme de la tige 17 du piston. La tige 17 et 1 paroi interne 13 présentent sur les exemple desfi.-. 1, 2 et 3, une forme étagée et soi) d'un diamètre relatif tel qu'elles fornien entre elles un conduit annulaire 18., ce condui agissant comme conduit d'admission pour 1;

Driving machine in which steam acts by expansion. The subject of the invention is a prime mover in which steam acts by expansion.
The machine is characterized in that it comprises a cylinder whose bottom protrudes inside the cylinder, a bell piston whose rod passes through this bottom, and which, at full stroke on the side of this bottom, completely entrusts this projection which forms a sheath over its entire extent, for the piston rod which passes through this base, the space between the piston rod and this sheath serving as a conduit for the admission of steam between said cylinder base and the piston , and for its escape, the arrangement being such that the mean transverse section of this duct increases as the piston moves away from said cylinder bottom, respectively decreases during the reverse stroke of the piston,
and remains at its maximum long enough to allow the escape of the steam and such that the harmful capacity that the said conduit forms, when the piston is fully stroke on the side of said bottom, is reduced to its minimum, while being sufficient for the admission of the fear goes.
The invention is particularly advantageous in its application to an engine as described in Swiss patents N 58500 and N 70196 William Joseph Still, that is to say to an engine which, although being internal combustion, also operates under the release of steam acting behind the combustion piston.
In machines of this kind, a certain quantity of steam expands under the edge of the piston wall; between this edge and the base of the cylinder bottom, but most of the steam expands back. of the piston crown; between this crown and the end of the bottom. For the sake of clarity in what follows, this latter space will be referred to below under the name of the scare cylinder.
In machines of this kind it is necessary to create a passage between the valve (s) and the steam cylinder for the intake and exhaust of steam into and out of the cylinder, and practice has shown that the surface of the cross section of the duct necessary for the admission of steam into the cylinder is much smaller than that which is necessary to produce its exhaust sufficiently. This passage or duct must therefore be large enough to allow this escape.
In cases where it is necessary or desirable to locate the valves outside the bottom of the cylinder, this duct should be of a length corresponding to that of the protrusion, and since all of its capacity acts as a deleterious capacity, this deleterious capacity risks to become unusually tall.
The object of the present invention is to obtain that the harmful capacity formed by this duct is reduced to its minimum, but still that the section of the duct is sufficient for the admission of steam.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, partially, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a piston and a cylinder base, showing the piston at the end of the stroke; Fig. 2 is a similar view, but showing the relative positions of the piston and the bottom of the cylinder when the piston is at its maximum distance from the bottom of the cylinder; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the position occupied by the piston when it has completed part of its stroke; Figs. 4 and 5 are views similar to FIGS. 1 and 2, but showing an embodiment of the object of the invention in which the piston rod is conical.
With reference to the drawing, 10 denotes the bottom of the cylinder which protrudes into the interior of the cylinder, not shown, and which also comprises the steam inlet and outlet ports 11 and 12.
This cylinder base is annular in shape and comprises internal walls and
EMI0002.0009
matching the shape of the interior of the bell piston 15 and the internal wall 13 matching the shape of the rod 17 of the piston. The rod 17 and 1 internal wall 13 have on the examples of fi.-. 1, 2 and 3, a stepped shape and self) of a relative diameter such that they form between them a duct annular 18., this conduit acting as an intake conduit for 1;
vapor when the piston is at full stroke and during a fraction of its stroke, e as a vapor exhaust duct during the reverse stroke of the piston.
At the end of the piston stroke, the duct 18 formed between the corresponding parts of the piston rod and the cylinder, has an average cross section sufficient to provide a suitable admission of the vapor. The surface of this section increases at the end. and as the piston moves away from the bottom of the cylinder, such that when the piston begins to crash, the area of the smaller cross section of this duct is left.
<>, its maximum and that in the example shown in fig. 1-3 this maximum surface will be practically maintained during the course (of the piston corresponding to the length indicated by Y in the drawing, that is to say until the piston reaches the position which (shown in fig. 3.
From this position the different cross sections of the neck will decrease until they reach their end when the piston has reached the end of its stroke, or before this moment. lTne d. The reduction of the cross sections of the pipe does not present any disadvantage in practice, however, since when the piston has reached the position shown in FIG. 3, most of the steam has been exhausted through the exhaust port.
In addition, it is frequently advantageous that a certain proportion of vapor is retained in the cylinder to produce the desired damping effect at the end of the stroke and, for this reason, the valve escapes. ment will be closed or will be under Turkish firm when the piston is in the position
EMI0002.0044
In the second embodiment of the object of the invention shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, the reduction of the mean transverse section of the duct 18 is more progressive than in the example shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, as well as the increase in this middle section at the start of the race.
It can thus be seen that, thanks to this invention, the harmful capacity of the duct 18 is reduced to a minimum, but nevertheless the section of the duct is sufficient for the admission of steam.
The invention is particularly applicable to engines with a low degree of steam intake, in which the piston stroke is small during intake.
In addition, the arrangement which has just been described can be applied to a combined steam and internal combustion engine in which the cylinder comprises two parts, one in which the steam acts and the other in which a reaction takes place. internal combustion; the arrangement being such that the bell-piston undergoes on its face capping the projection, the action of steam, its other face undergoing the action of the gas explosion.
