Device for encrypting plain text and deciphering the encrypted text. The invention relates to a device that is to be used for encrypting a plain text and for deciphering the encrypted text. So che Vorrich lines of known type usually consist of auns stop and display points in such a number as different characters can be encrypted, and from interchangeable ver interchangeable connections between the to stop and display points.
According to the invention, such a device is equipped with a smaller number of display points than different characters can be encrypted. In order to enable this reduction of the display digits, it is advantageous to use the characters in the plain text, cl, h. To divide the characters to be enciphered into several rows, and to connect the stop for one character in each row by the same connection with the same display point, so that the same display point can be excited, regardless of the row from which the character to be enciphered chen originates. In order to make it clear in the encrypted text to which row the encrypted character belongs, special stop points can be provided in one of these rows.
These stop points are expediently also connected to display points through the exchange causing connections. However, these would not include any corresponding keystrokes from the other rows. The encrypted text would therefore only contain as many characters as each of the rows of plaintext characters, plus the number of shift characters. Characters must also be provided in the encrypted text for these shift characters. It is advantageous to use the lower case letters of the alphabet as cipher characters, for example, and those letters that do not necessarily need to be used as the cipher characters, z.
B. Ü ö e. Together with the small letters, these then form the first series of characters to be encrypted, so-called plain text. In this case, the second row would be made up of the capital letters and a third row, for example, of the numbers, punctuation marks and similar symbols.
The number of envelopes can be made different, for example, if there are only two rows of characters on the plaintext page, you can only arrange one toggle so that only the transition v on one row of characters to the other is recognizable would be made. However, this would have the disadvantage that if part of the text was destroyed, for example, it would no longer be recognizable to which of the two rows would have to be switched, so it is more advantageous to arrange as many switchover lengths as there are rows of characters that it is clearly defined to which row the characters following the shift symbol belong.
Since the shift characters, like all other characters, can be connected to the display points by means of the interchangeable links, they are expediently also enciphered and can no longer be recognized as shift characters in the ciphered text. A further advantage of such a system is that it makes telegram traffic considerably easier because the characters that are the longest in Morse code do not need to appear in the ciphered text at all.
Two embodiments of the subject invention are shown in the drawing. FIGS. 1 and 2 show that one of the same schematically ordered for encryption and decryption. In Fig. 3 an encryption device is partially schematic. partially drawn diagrammatically, which, like a typewriter, contains a number of keys and a writing device. and how one is served.
The cipher device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 has two rows of nine plain text characters and a shift character. Fig. 1 shows the encryption circuit, Fis. 2 the deciphering circuit, 11 are con tact buttons with the letters a to i on the one hand and the numbers 1 to 9 on the other. 12 are incandescent lamps that have the same designation a to i and 1 to 9. Immediately behind the contacts 11 are also incandescent lamps 13 connected, wel che carry the designation of the contact buttons belonging to them. The toggle button 14 is provided with the symbol j and is connected in series with an incandescent lamp 15 which, in contrast to the other lamps, is colored red.
The contact button j also includes a lamp in the row 12, which is also denoted by j. In addition to this, a red lamp 19 is placed in such a way that the lamps j and 19 can be exchanged for one another by a switch 20. Rows of contacts 16 and 17 are located between the incandescent lamps 12 and the contacts 11. These are connected to one another in an irregular manner in such a way that one of the contacts 16 is connected to one of the contacts 17. The connection between these contact rubbing is shown by lines. In addition, the contacts connected to each other in both rows have the same numerical designation. The type of connection between contacts 16 and 17 forms the encryption key.
Since one pole of the contact buttons 11 and one pole of the incandescent lamps 12 are energized by a power source 18, when one of the buttons 11 is depressed, the corresponding incandescent lamp from row 13 and one incandescent lamp from row 12 light up. To explain the circuit, the process when encrypting the sequence of characters a, b, c, d, 1, 2, 3, 4, e, f, g is shown below. In order to encipher this sequence of characters, the buttons in row 11 are pressed one after the other, whereby the incandescent lamps e, e, j, b light up one after the other in row 12. Since d is followed by a number, the button j is now pressed so that the lamp marked with f lights up in the row of lamps 12. Now the button a, 1 is pressed, whereupon the lamp e lights up in the row 12.
The numbers 2, 3 and 4 result in the letters c, j and b. Since a switchover is necessary after 4, button j is pressed again. Let it appear; in row 12 the letter f. The letters e, f, g now result in the letters h, a, d.
The plain text (i, b, c; t1; 1, ?, 3; 1, e, f, g has become the following ciphertext : c, c, j, b, f, e, c, j, b, f, h, a, d. At the same time as the incandescent lamps in row 12, the incandescent lamps in row 13 had lit up during encryption, thus enabling control.
If it is to be deciphered, the connections between the rows of contacts 16 and 17 must be changed accordingly, for example in such a way that the row of contacts that previously formed row 17 now forms row 16 and vice versa. The circuit created in this way is shown in FIG. Finally, the switch 20 was switched to the red lamp 19 for decryption, after it had previously been in connection with the lamp of row 12 labeled j. If the letters e, c, j, b are now posted from the ciphered text, then the letters a, b, e, d appear in the row of incandescent lamps 12 one after the other.
If the contact button f is pressed, the red incandescent lamp 19 lights up and thus shows that the following characters are numbers. If the letters e, c, j, b are now struck, the incandescent lamps 1, 2, 3, 4, which also serve as indicators, light up one after the other. When you press the contact button f, the switchover light bulb 19 lights up, indicating the transition to letters. When the contact buttons h, a, d are pressed down, the light bulbs e, f, g light up. The cipher has been converted into plain text again.
The embodiment shown in Fig. 3, for example, shows an encryption device with three rows of characters on the plain text page and, corresponding to these three rows of characters, three shift keys. 21 are the keys, six of which are three characters to be encrypted, i.e. H. Carrying plain text characters, while the last three are provided with the shift characters e, b, ö. The keys are by means of pin 22 in holes of a U-shaped support 23 leads ge. They rest on the upper contact springs of pushbutton contacts 24. 26 is a shift drum made of insulating material, on which nine pairs of electrically conductive segments 27 are attached. Two of these segments are always opposite one another, and for every two segments there are four contact springs which are offset from one another by approximately 90 '.
A lever 29, which can be moved between the stops 30 and 31, is attached to the shaft 28 of the shift drum. The shift drum can therefore be turned 90. 32, 33, 34 is a device that is used to swap the power lines between the buttons and the display points. It consists of 'rollers made of insulating material, which are mounted on a common axis 35. The rollers 33 carry nine contacts arranged in a circle on each of their end faces. These are connected to one another in such a way that a contact on one side is always connected to a contact on the other side, specifically in as random a mess as possible. In their middle, the rollers 3 have 3 toothed rings, with the aid of which they can be rotated about the axis 35.
The rollers 32 have nine contacts on only one side and are rigidly connected to the axle 35. The roller 34 is designed similarly to the roller 33, with the only difference that the opposing con tacts of both end faces are connected to one another on it, and that it is not rotatable, but is mounted on the axis 35 so that it can be moved. By means of a lever 36 and a spring 37, the roller 34 presses the rollers 33 against the stationary roller 32 on the left.
But it can, contrary to that. Pressure animal spring, pressed by hand against the roller 32 on the right. 38 are three gears, -wel-, before meshing with the gears arranged on the rollers 33 @.
They are fastened on the shaft 39 and arranged with as far as possible blemishless, 'd. H:
Provided on the circumference unevenly distributed teeth, so that a rotation of the shaft 39 has very different large switching steps - the "individual rollers 33. At one end of the shaft 39 is a ratchet wheel that is inevitably connected by an angular gear 40, in whose teeth a pawl 41 engages which is rotatably fastened to an armature 42. The armature is pulled by a spring 43 giving a stop 44.
By means of a relay 45, it can be raised so far that the pawl engages the next tooth. 46 is the paper roll of a display BEZW. Writing device. It is pivotably mounted on two levers 47 about their pivot point 48. The pivot point 48 is not arranged in a stationary manner, but in turn lies on one arm of a lever 49 with the fixed pivot point 50.
This lever 49 carries on its other arm three wide teeth 51 made of soft iron, opposite which, however, three relays 52, 53 and 54 are arranged with larger spaces. 55 is a leaf spring which engages with a nose 56 in one of three notches attached to the lever 49 and thus holds the lever 49 in one of these three positions. 57 is a spool whose movable core 58 is connected by a link 59 with the lever 47 of the paper roll. 60 is the writing whale, which carries three rows of characters on its circumference, namely on top the characters placed on the top of the keys and also the three switching characters, in the middle and below the middle and bottom row of characters on the keys.
The platen is mounted on the shaft 61.
This is rotated evenly by a motor not shown in the drawing. A tube 62 made of conductive material is attached to it in an insulated manner, on which a slide spring 63 is firmly attached on one side, while a brush 64 grinds on the other side. The spring 63 slides on the inside of a collector made up of nine segments 65. These segments are insulated from one another and are held together by an insulating ring 66. 6 7 is a shift drum with three segments 72 extending approximately over half the circumference of the same and three rows of brushes 73, 74 and 75 offset by 120 relative to one another.
The individual parts of the device are connected in the following manner by power lines. The upper springs of the contacts 24 are connected to one pole of a current source 225 . The lower nine springs are with the nine lying in a row Bür most 68 of the shift drum 26 vorbanden. The brushes 69 lying in a row of this switch drum are connected to the nine contacts of the exchange drum 32 on the left. The brushes 70 are connected to the nine segments 65 of the collector and, insofar as they belong to the acts provided with three characters, to the contact pins of the exchange roller 32 on the right.
Of the brushes 71 lying in a grater, the six at the front, which are in the circuit of the three-digit keys 21, each with two opposite pins of the roller 34 are connected. The three lovers behind, through which the circuit of the Umsehalttasten runs, are ge to the brushes 75 of the shift drum 67 leads.
The brushes 74 are connected to the three pairs of contacts of the roller 34 that are still free, and the brushes 73 are connected to the magnetic coils 52, 53 and 54. The other three terminals of these solenoid coils are led to a line 72a, in which the brush 64 is connected via the solenoid 5 7. The Lei device 72a is via the coils of the relay 45 to the other pole of the power source 25 leads. The relay 45 can be short-circuited by a switch 76.
The mode of action of the Vorricbtung is as follows: When encrypting bt # fin, the lever: 9 of the switching roller 26, the sliding roller 34, the switching roller 67 and the switch 76 in the position shown. If, for example, the button labeled a g 1 is pressed, the current flows from the current source 25 via the contact 4,
di.- the furthest forward contact brush 68 and the concealed segment 2 7 to the furthest forward contact brushF 71. From this the current flows to the displaceable casing, old, valze 34, increases. here its way through .die three rotatable rollers 33 to the roller 32 shown on the left and from there to the furthest forward contact brush 69, via the visible segment 27 to the relevant contact brush 70 and from there to one of the segments 65 of the collector.
If the contact spring 63, which is attached to the always rotating shaft 61, touches this segment under tension, then the circuit is closed. The current continues its way through the contact brush 64, the solenoid 57, the relay coils 45 to the power source 25 back. The magnetic core 58 is drawn into the coil 57 and the paper roller 46 very quickly struck against the continuously rotating (or braked during the attack) writing roller 60 and so the letter belonging to this particular segment of the platen is printed. At the same time, the armature 42 is lifted by the relay 45 so that the pawl 41 engages the next tooth of the ratchet wheel 40.
If the struck button is released again, the relay coil 45 is also de-energized, so that the armature 42 is again placed against the stop 44 by the spring 43 and the shaft 39, the gears 38 and the shift drums 33 are rotated. As a result of the different arrangement of the teeth on the gears 38, the switching rollers 33 make switching steps of different sizes, but they are dimensioned so that the contacts of the neighboring rollers are always exactly opposite. A new exchange alphabet is set after each letter. The current curve remains the same when a shift key is pressed.
Only the current path between the brushes 71 and the exchange roller 34 changes insofar as the current only takes its path via the switching roller 67. Current flows through all individual devices in exactly the same way as when one with three plain text characters hits Button. So the shift character is also encrypted.
If the device is to be used for deciphering, then the lever 29 must be placed against the stop 31 and the switching drum 67 must be brought into such a position that the rows of brushes 73 and 74 are connected to one another by the segments 72. The exchange rollers 33 must be brought into their starting position, which they had when the production of the encrypted text was started. If, for example, the letter a is struck from the cipher, which may have been created by pressing the shift key d, then the current of the current source 25 takes the following course.
About the front loving contact 24, the front brush 68 over the segment 27 lying on the same to the front brush 69 in the left, fixed roller 32, through. the switching rollers 33 in the fixed roller 34 to the middle brush 74 of the switching roller 67 and from the middle of the three brushes 73 via the Mag netspule 53 and the relay 45 back to the power source.
As a result, the middle tooth 51 of the lever 49, which partially opposes it, is attracted by the magnet 53 and thereby the paper roller 46 is lowered so far that the nose 56 is now in the middle detent of the lever 49, so that the platen 60 at the -following letters the characters in the middle row of the platen are written.
If letters of the encrypted text are posted that do not correspond to shift characters but to characters of the plain text, then the process takes place in exactly the same way as in the case of encryption, with the only difference being that the Tai, wallowing in the opposite direction from the current running through the keys to the writing device.
Letters of the encrypted text, on the other hand, that result from adding the shift characters heia. Writing the plain text resulted in a corresponding adjustment of the paper roller each time.
It is not always necessary to encrypt the entire text. The device described now allows plain text to be inserted between the encrypted text. For this purpose, during encryption, pressing the free end of the lever 36 presses the roller 34 against the roller 32) shown on the right, so that the current no longer makes its way over the switching rollers 33, but directly from the switch via the rollers 34 and 32 takes to the writing point.
In addition, the switching drum 67 must be brought into a position similar to that used for deciphering. So it must be the Bür stenreihen 73 with the brush rubbing 75 in connection so that when the toggle keys hit one of the Mag designated 52, 53 or 54 excited and the platen roller can be raised or lowered accordingly. The switch 76 must be closed while the plain text is being written so that the exchange device 33, 38, 45 is not adjusted any further, but starts again with the new character to be encrypted when the exchange rollers are set, which is when the last character in front of the plain text is screamed was hired. The plain text given with the encrypted text can of course also be written down during decryption.
To do this, the device must be brought into exactly the same position as when writing plain text inserted between the ciphertext.
This design makes it possible to reduce the number of characters used in the encrypted text to a low level. First of all, this has the advantage that unauthorized decryption of the cipher text is extremely difficult. In addition, deciphering on the machine itself is made much easier, because when deciphering, only one series of characters needs to be struck.
