Dans le procédé décrit, on peut utiliser comme matière fibreuse des pulpes d'abaca ou chanvre de Manille, de bois, de coton, de jute, de chanvre ou d'amiante. Dans ce pro cédé, on envisage cinq opérations principales: premièrement, on amène le noyau consti tuant le conducteur en contact intime avec: un liquide renfermant la matière fibreuse, de manière que celle-ci s'applique sur le con ducteur sous forme d'une couche pulpeuse;
deuxièmement, on éloigne le conducteur du liquide afin de permettre à la pulpe qui s'est dépotée d'adhérer au conducteur; troisième ment, on enlève l'excès d'humidité de la couulie pulpeuse encore molle, sans détacher cette couche du conducteur;
Les rouleaux expulseurs peuvent être construits en caoutchouc et maintenus l'un près de l'autre sous une certaine pression qui s'exerce sur le conducteur et sur la. couche pulpeuse quand ils passent entre ces rouleaux. Le but de ceux-ci est d'éliminer la plus grande quantité possible de liquide de la. couche, et de donner à. celle-ci la. forme d'un ruban étroit s'étendant latéralement de chaque côté du conducteur, ainsi qu'il est;
Process for covering any metal core with a layer of fibrous material, and device for carrying out this process. The invention relates to a method for covering any metal core with a layer of fibrous material. According to this invention, said fibrous material is applied directly to said core in the form of a pulpy layer, and the fibers of the material are made sufficiently agglutinating to adhere strongly to the core.
Depending on the device used for the setting of the above-mentioned process, the metal core, to be covered with the. fibrous material, is supported by such an apparatus pierced with holes, means being provided to cause relative movement between said apparatus and the liquid in which the fibrous material is suspended, so that a pulpy layer is deposited on it. the core.

fig. 11. gives a plan view of the conductor and the pulp layer as shown in cross section in FIG. 8; fig. 1.2 gives an elevation view of a modification that can be made to the wire apparatus. i.
In the process described, it is possible to use pulp of abaca or Manila hemp, wood, cotton, jute, hemp or asbestos as the fibrous material. In this process, five main operations are envisaged: firstly, the core constituting the conductor is brought into intimate contact with: a liquid containing the fibrous material, so that the latter is applied to the conductor in the form of a pulpy layer;
secondly, the conductor is moved away from the liquid in order to allow the pulp which has been deposited to adhere to the conductor; thirdly, we remove excess moisture from the pulpy couulie still soft, without detaching this layer of the conductor;
fourth, the pulpy layer is shaped so that it takes the shape of the conductor, and fifth, all the moisture is removed from the pulpy layer, so that a very dry envelope surrounds the conductor. and adheres to it.
The means for performing the first of the above-mentioned operations, i.e. for applying the pulpy layer to the conductor, comprises a container containing a mixture formed of a liquid in which a fibrous material is suspended, and a rotating hollow drum, part of which, pierced with holes, supports the conductor. The level of the mixture in the drum is kept lower than the level of the mixture in the drum; the container, so that a circulation of this mixture takes place towards the interior of the drum through the portion pierced with holes.
By this arrangement, a pulpy layer is filtered through the holes, and applied to the conductor supported by the drum. However, instead of the aforementioned device for depositing the pulp layer on the conductor, other arrangements, such as a grinding machine, can be used.
The second operation is carried out by moving the conductor away from the drum, so that it remains suspended and the pulpy layer deposited wraps around it owing to its weight, to the surface tension of the liquid containing the fibrous material, and the agzlutinating action of the fibers of the pulp. .
The third operation, which consists in removing the moisture from the pulpy layer placed on the conductor, can be carried out by a series of expulsion rollers between which the conductor covered with pulp passes.
It has been found desirable to provide an auxiliary roller perforated with holes over which the conductor passes before being subjected to the expulsion rollers, el; do this so that excess moisture can drain freely from the.
pulpy layer, can be removed before the entire conductor and layer are subjected to the expelling rollers. However, this auxiliary roller may be omitted if other means are provided to remove excess moisture from the diaper, which excess can actually flow freely due to its own weight. The purpose of the expeller rollers is not only to remove moisture from the pulpy layer, but also to give this layer the shape of a ribbon.
The fourth operation, which consists in shaping the pulpy layer around the conductor so that it takes the shape of the latter, is carried out by means of a pair of plates forming springs, between which the conductor engages longitudinally. , these plates being driven by a rotational movement, By this maneuver, the parts of the pulp layer tape placed on either side of the conductor, are wound around each other, so that the pulp envelops exactly the driver.
In addition, a perfect combination of the fibers of the pulpy layer is obtained and this layer attaches strongly to the conductor.
The fifth and last operation consisting in completely drying the pulp layer can be carried out by drums over which the conductor and its pulp cover pass, these drums being heated by means of a steam jet or by any other process. .
The word pulp, as it is used in this description, designates a fibrous and cohesive mass, first suspended in a liquid, then appearing successively in the wet state and in the dry state.
The conductor, which must be covered with a pulpy layer, is unwound from a coil 20 and passes over a guide pulley 21 then around a drum 22 bathing part cry in a liquid containing a fibrous material in suspension, and contained in a container 23 of semi-spherical shape. The drum 22 comprises two metal plates 24 placed vis-a-vis one another and supporting a cylindrical part 25, as seen in FIG. 5. This cylindrical part 25 is pierced with a series of relatively large holes 26 and covered with a narrow strip 27 constituting a metal net.
The conductor, passing over the drum, rests on the belt 27, as shown in fig. 2. The drum 22 is mounted on an axis, tubular 28 which rests on suitable bearings 29 supported by the frame 30 of the device. "In order to apply the pulpy layer to the conductor as it passes over the drum 22, the liquid in the drum is kept at a level lower than that which it occupies in the container 23, as shown by the lines dotted lines A and B.
This difference in level is maintained by a reed si phon 31, the inlet opening of which plunges into the liquid inside the drum, while the outlet opening mouths so that the discharge of the drum. siphon is carried out on either side of the tubular axis 28. A continual circulation of the liquid is carried out in the reservoir 23, cil passing this liquid from a reservoir 32 into the reservoir 23, then through a tube 19 in a new tank, not shown in the drawing, from where it is finally returned to the first tank 32 by means of any pump.
Drum 22 by spinning drags the conductor through reservoir 23, and as a result of the difference in level in reservoir 23 and in drum 22, liquid from reservoir 23 passes through the meshes of net 27 and holes 26. The fibrous material suspended in this liquid 9st thus filtered and is deposited in the form of a pulpy layer on the outer part of the net 27 and on the conductor. In order to keep the net clean before the arrival of the driver and the application of a new pulpy layer, it is washed by a jet of pressurized water sent through the tube 33.
Drum 22 rotates in the direction indicated by the arrow. The conductor and the pulpy layer leave the drum at its upper part, and owing to the sheer weight of this layer, as well as owing to the surface tension of the liquid and the clumping action of the fibers of the layer, the latter slides around the conductor and remains attached to the latter in the shape shown on the fi. 7.
From the drum 22, the conductor with the pulpy layer, passes over an auxiliary roller 34 then between a pair of expulsion rollers 35 and 36. These rollers rotate between two consoles 37 fixed to a metal trestle 38 supported by the frame 30. The The shaft carrying the roller 36 is actuated by a pulley which receives the desired energy from a motor 39 by a belt transmission 40 and 41. The rollers 35 and 36, attracting the conductor, unwind the latter from the reel 20 and rotate the drum 22.
The auxiliary roller 34, shown in detail in FIG. 6, affects the shape of a metal drum those provided with a peripheral slot covered with a strip 42 constituting a net. It has been found advantageous to use an auxiliary roller 34 pierced with holes at the point where the conductor and the pulpy layer pass so that the excess liquid contained in this layer can flow easily.
Indeed, if this is not the case, this excess liquid at the time when the conductor and the layer are compressed by the rollers 35 and 36, could form a flow which would tend to separate the pulpy layer from the conductor, because at this moment the pulp layer little and still very soft On the contrary, when this excess of liquid is eliminated, the pulpy layer presents a much greater adhesion force and the fibers of this layer agglutinate much better with the conductor . There is therefore no risk when the conductor and the layer do not feel between the expelling rollers, that this layer separates from the conductor.
The expelling rollers may be constructed of rubber and held close together under a certain pressure exerted on the conductor and on the. pulpy layer when they pass between these rollers. The purpose of these is to remove as much liquid as possible from the. layer, and give to. this one there. shape of a narrow ribbon extending laterally on each side of the conductor, as it is;
shown in fig. 8 and 11. The action of the rollers also tends to agglutinate the fibers in a more intimate relationship, thus increasing the tensile force of the covering and ensuring better protection of the conductor.
After passing between the rollers 35 and 36, the conductor and the pulpy layer in the form of a ribbon pass through a gap which winds the two side projections (the ribbon, between them and around the conductor. The positions occupied by these protrusions at the beginning of the action of the jig and; after this action, are shown respectively on the fi- ,. 9 and 10.
The template causes a perfect combination of the fibers of the pulpy layer and gives this layer a shape exactly reproducing the con tour of the conductor. Following this operation, the. pulpy layer provides such a homogeneous mass that if one makes a section through the conductor and the layer, the last octt.e offers a clean cut and cannot be easily. detached from the driver.
L. - template is shown in detail on the fi, -. 3 and 4. It comprises two collars 43 and -1-1 eli in the form of buckets, kept spaced apart from each other by rods 45. These two collars have respectively a bulure -16 or -16 'resting in suitable bearings; supported by the easels 37 and 47 fixed to the frame. Two plates 48 and 49, in the form of tongues, one of the curved edges of which is wound around a rod 45 serving as a pivot, are placed opposite each other.
Springs 50 exert a desired pressure on these tabs, tending to bring them closer to one another. The tension of the springs 50 can be adjusted by means of screws 51 supported by brackets 52 fixed to the rods 45. The ends of the tongues 48 and 49, placed on the side of the rollers 35 and 36, are bevelled so as to pre feel a base surface to the conductor and to the pulp layer as they pass from said rollers to the jig. After passing (, liter said tabs, the conductor exits through the pipe 46 '.
The tongues 48 and 49 turn rapidly around the conductor and the pulpy layer, and this under the action of the pulley 18 fixed to the pipe 46 '. The pulley 18 receives the desired energy from the motor 39 through the belt 17.
The tongues 48 and 49, by turning, wind the lateral projections of the tape under which the pulpy layer is present, one on the other and around the conductor, and this in the same way due if the conductor and the tape were in rolled up on a table using the palm of the hand.
The conductor, leaving the template, passes over a device used to dry the pulpy coating which covers it. In the case shown in the drawing, the conductor passes over a pair (the hollow drums 52 and 53, heated internally and presenting a series [the grooves 53 "(fig. 2).
Guides, lion shown, direct the conductor on the first of these drums then on the other, until he has passed through all the grooves of the two drums, after which he finally rolls on a reel. 54. The drums 52 and: 53 are supported by bearings placed on trestles fixed to the frame 30. The spool 54 is also supported by bearings mounted on consoles 55, also fixed to the frame 30. The motor 39 drives these drums and this coil by a belt transmission.
When it is desired that the pulpy layer, covering the conductor, present certain distinctive marks, either from the decorative point of view, or in the case of electrical conductors in order to be able to recognize them from one another, a device applying the mark desired can be used. In the figure, this device is shown at 55 ', and allows winding, in the form of spirals, two stranded son. Preferably, this winding should take place when the pulp layer is still soft enough, so that these threads adapt well to said layer.
The winding of these threads also makes it possible to reinforce the pulpy layer and to keep it in place on the conductor, although it is not necessary to resort to this reinforcement ment the method described making it possible to obtain a sufficient layer. solid.
A variant brought to the apparatus of FIG. 1, is indicated in fig. 12. A reservoir see 60 contains the liquid in which the fiber material is suspended, and this reservoir is in communication with a tube 61 terminating in a spout 62. The conductor, to be covered, is brought under the spout 62 by closed means not shown, and a continuous jet of liquid passes through the spout and is deposited on the upper part of the conductor. After the conductor has passed under the spout, it is suspended so that the pulpy layer completely envelops it and adheres to it.
The excess liquid supplied by the spout 62 is collected in a container 63, from where it is returned, by a pump, into the reservoir 60.
Although it has been envisaged as an object of the invention the application of a pulp layer on a conductor, without the use of adhesive material the method and the apparatuses described can be used with a mixture containing the desired pulp and in addition an adhesive substance. In addition, the pulp layer can be deposited on the conductor after it has first been covered with an adhesive substance.
Finally, if the device described only allows one conductor to be covered with a pulpy layer at a time, it is obvious that this positive device can be modified so as to simultaneously cover several conductors.
