The frame of the. machine shown in the drawings comprises a base plate 1, a front plate 2 and a rear plate 3, these plates 2 and 3 being joined by a side wall 4.
The motor shaft 5 of the machine is mounted so as to rotate in bearings 6 and 7 projecting from a plate 8 fixed to the frame of the machine. At the outer end of the motor shaft. 5 is attached a pulley 9 which is actuated by a belt 10 receiving its movement from any suitable motive source, for example an electric motor.
At the inner end of the motor shaft 5 is fixed a worm 11 which actuates a helical gear 12, meshing with the worm 11. The helical gear 1.2 is mounted loose on a shaft 1.3 which is itself supported in brackets 1.4 and 1.5 of the frame (fig. 11). A cam 1.6 is made integrally with the helical toothed wheel 12 and actuates by means of means which will be described below a mechanism for advancing a gluing strip serving to apply adhesive material to the blanks. successive cigar rings, as will be described later.
On the shaft 13 is fixed by means of a pin 201 (fig. 11) a clutch member 17 inside which can slide a clutch claw 18 which is normally forced back inwards by via a spring 19 bearing against the outer plate 20 of the clutch member 17.
The clutch claw 18 is provided with a notch <B> 2 </B> 1 and a clutch bar 22 is established so that its outer end can enter this notch 21 and exit therefrom, to produce the engagement. of the clutch claw 18 with the helical toothed wheel 12, or its disengagement, as this will be explained below. The release bar 22 (FIG. 5) pivots at one of its ends, at 23, on a frame part. It is provided with a lug 24 projecting downwards to which the eyelet 25 of a control rod 26 is fixed. The rod 26 extends to a pedal or other control member at the bottom. by means of which the clutch bar 22 can be withdrawn from the notch 21 of the clutch claw.
The release bar 2 2 is normally held in the notch 21 of the clutch claw 18 by means of a spring 27 fixed to the release bar 22 and the other end of which is fixed to an ear 28 of the built. The pivotal movement of the clutch bar 22 in one direction is limited by a hook-shaped projection 29 provided on the clutch bar 22 and engaging over a projection 30 fixed to the frame. The projection 30, which extends above the clutch bar, limits the upward movement of the latter.
The helical gear 12 is continuously actuated by the worm 11 when the machine is running, and since the helical gear 12 is mounted loose on the shaft 13, it does not lag behind. not this shaft unless the clutch bar 22 is removed from the notch 21: of the clutch claw 18; if this withdrawal has. In this case, the clutch claw 18 is pushed back inwards by means of the spring 19 and enters a cavity 31 of the helical toothed wheel 12.
The clutch member 17 which is fixed to the shaft 13 is in this way coupled to the helical gear wheel 1.2 and is driven by the latter, which therefore actuates the shaft 13 and the wheels. different mechanisms set in motion by it. It can therefore be seen immediately that the mechanisms set in motion by means of the shaft 13 will only be actuated when this shaft is coupled to the helical toothed wheel 12 through the intermediary of the clutch mechanism described above. .
Attached to the shaft 13 is a worm 32 which is in engagement with a helical toothed wheel 33 attached to a shaft 34. Another toothed wheel, 35, mounted on the shaft 34 is in engagement with a shaft 34. toothed wheel 36 which it drives and which is fixed to a shaft 37; on this shaft 37 is mounted a group of cams intended to actuate the folding fingers -de the ring blank, which will be described below.
The shaft 34 extends beyond the rear plate 3 of the frame of the machine and on this shaft 34 is fixed, near its outer end, an interrupted toothed wheel 38 (fig. 6), which is meshed with a small interrupted toothed wheel 39, which it drives here; which is mounted so as to rotate on a shaft end 40 fixed in. a boss 41 formed on the rear plate 3 of the frame.
To the small interrupted tooth wheel 39 are fixed two retainers 42 and 43 arranged to mount on wrenches surfaces-cams 44 and 45 of the interrupted tooth wheel 38 and to cause two stops in the operation of the mechanism actuated by the small wheel Ù, interrupted toothing 39.
To the wheel 39 is fixed a crank 46 intended to be rotated by the wheel 39 and connected, by its free end, at 47, to a connecting rod 48 whose upper end is articulated at 49 to. a lug 50, an arm 51 which extends over the upper end of the machine and is provided, at its external end, with a clamping tab 52 (fig. 4 and 7) which rests on the cigar to be fitted with the ring and pushes it down, in the field of action of the folding mechanism of the ring blank.
The tab 52 is provided with a central cavity 53 .in which. the folding fingers of the ring blank can act to pass the ring around the station, without being hampered by the tab 52. The arm 51 is fixed to the upper end of a vertical shaft 54 which is arranged so as to be able to perform a vertical reciprocating movement in guides 55 and 56.
On, this shaft 54 with vertical reciprocating movement is also fixed an arm 57 which goes around one of the sides of the machine and then extends forwards to the front of it. this. This curved arm 57 fixed to the shaft 54 therefore participates in the movements of the latter. On the front of the machine, the arm 57 supports a blank magazine, rings 58 for raising and lowering it as will be described below.
The store @ for ring blanks is shown in detail in figs. 12, 13 and 14 and com carries a ring blank support plate 59, the height of which is adjustable and on which rests a stack of ring blanks 64 (Fig. 4). This plate 59 is carried by a rod 60 which can slide vertically in the guide keys 61 and 62 @ of the arm 57.
Guides are shown at 63 for the ends of the stack of ring blanks 64. The guides are mounted on carriages which can be adjusted in the slides 65 of the arm 57 to allow key blanks to be held with rings of dimensions different - which can be placed between them, the guide carriages being able to be brought closer or apart from one another using adjustment screws 66.
The end guides 63 are each provided with two guide bars 67, spaced apart from each other, between which is placed the narrowed end 68 provided at each end of the support plate, the blanks of bushings, which prevents this plate from getting out of alignment.
Each guide 63 is further provided with two adjustable vertical guide rods 69, which extend upwards by pulling arms 70 mounted on pivots 71 and can be moved closer to or apart from one another by means of 'an adjusting screw 72, with reverse threads. It can be seen from the above that the ring blank magazine is adjustable so as to be able to contain shelves of different lengths and widths.
In addition, a device is provided for lifting the support of the ring blanks to a suitable level to allow removal of the ring blank located at the top of the stack regardless of the quantity of 'blank, of the rings contained in the stack, as will be seen below.
The rod 60 which extends downward from the rack blank support plate 59 can slide vertically with greasy friction in the guides 61 and 62. On top of the guide 62 sits a lifting plate 73. having a slot 74 at one of its ends, .in which engages a pin 7.5 projecting upward on the guide 62. The plate 73 is pierced with a hole 76 through which the rod 60 passes without friction.
A console 77 (fig. 4) on the anterior plate 2 of the frame carries a plate 78 with a cheek 79 (fig. 1 and 4), the plate 78 being provided with two slots 80 in which pass screws 81 screwed into the console. The slots 80 allow vertical adjustment of the position of the plate 78 on the frame. When the arm 57 is moved downwards, the lifting plate 7 3 strikes the cheek 79 forming a protruding stop.
As the end of the plate 73 encounters the stopper 79 and the downward movement of the arm 57 continuing, the plate 73 tilts at an upward angle, jams on the. rod 60 and drives the latter upwards by lifting, therefore, the. blank stack of rings 64 supported by the. plate 59. The rod 60 moving with greasy friction clans its guides 61 ci-, 62 is thus retained by friction in any position in which it has been raised.
On top of the stack of berry blanks is arranged, in cooperation with the ring blanks located at. the upper part: of the stack, a mechanism serving to drive the ring blank and to apply adhesive material to it.
On the front plate 2 (the frame of the machine is fixed a plate 82 (fig. 1) immobilized in position by screws 83. This plate 82 is provided with a bearing 84 in which the pivot 85 can turn. of a cam lever comprising a hub 86, an arm 87 directed upwards and an arm 88 directed downwards. A cam roller 89 is mounted on the lower arm 88 and this roller rolls on the cam 16 which is made one piece with the helical gear 12 and is therefore driven by the latter. The roller 89 is hand held against the cam 16 by means of a spring 90, one end of which is fixed to the arm 88 and the other to the frame.
The arm 87 extending upwards is connected, by its upper end, at 91, to a sliding rod <B> 92 </B> (fig. <B> 5), </B> which can slide in a guide 93, fixed on the front plate 2 of the frame. The rod 92 is arranged so as to support the mechanism combined with the gluing device comprising a glued tape in combination with means for wetting it and for transporting it in contact with the blank ring to be glued. It is provided with two support pins 94 and 95 (fig. 2, 3, 5, 9) extending laterally and which support the means 96 serving to wet said tape.
These means comprise a wetting bowl 102, provided with an arm 97 extending towards the a va.nt and provided with a nose 98 in which is formed a notch 99 by which it rests on the. anterior support pin 9-l. The cup 102 is provided, on the other hand, with a posterior ear 97a by which it rests on the pin 95. It can be seen that the pins 94 and 95 are provided, at their upper part, with several notches 100 ( Fig. 2 and 3), one or the other of which is intended to receive a tooth 101 provided on the nose 98 or on the ear 97a respectively. This arrangement makes it possible to place the wetting bowl more or less close to the rod 92.
The stack of cigar band blanks is located below the gluing device, and the nose 98, serving as a support for the glued tape, is located directly above one end of the stack of cigar ring blanks. , so that this stack can, in its upward movement, come into contact, by one end with the glued tape which removes, each time, the blank ring if killed at the top of the stack. To take into account the differences in length of the ring blanks; the position of the wetting means can be adjusted on the support pins 94 and 95, using the notched fixing described above. The wetting bowl 102 is designed to receive water 103 and contains a rotating wetting wheel 104 covered with an absorbent pad 105.
The adhesive tape or tape is indicated at <B> 106. </B> It is moved in the direction of the arrows (fig. 9 and 10) using a device which will be described later. It comes from a food roll intended to be placed near the machine and rises by passing through: through a curved guide 107, and between rollers 108 and 109 which are supported by a counterweight lever 110, the roller 109 holding it against the dampening wheel 1.04, supplied with the dampening water, so as to receive on its underside, which is the adhesive surface, a sufficient quantity of water to wet the adhesive material covering this face.
The ribbon 106 extends forward to the nose 98, near which it passes under a roller <B> 111. </B> The nose 98 is provided with a block 112 which projects downwards and, which provides a flat bearing surface for the stack ring blanks when these are moved upward against the glue tape 106.
After the glued tape has fulfilled its function - which consists in lightly gluing the blanks of the rings which are presented to it, by giving them some of its ad hesive material, it takes the path upwards, stepping over the nose. 98, then goes backwards through a guide member 113, in the form of a u, in which rests a tensioning weight 114 provided with a rod <B> 115 </B> allowing it to be removed, by hand, from the position it occupies in the guide 113, when desired.
From this guide member <B> 113, </B> the ru ban 106 passes backwards under a pivoting finger 1.16 provided with a lateral pin 117 and journaled at 118 in a support 119 in U elm , attached to the curved guide 101. The finger 116 is normally held with its beak 120, curved downwards, applied to the tape 106 by means of a spring 121 until the moment when it is lifted up. using a cam member 122.
The cam member 122 consists of a movable plate preserving an inclined ramp for mant cam 123, on which the pin 117 is intended to rise to lift the finger 116 and allow the free passage of the tape used, under the finger 116 (fig. . 10). The plate 122 is set in motion by means of an ear 124 fixed to the rod 92 and directed upwards. This ear is provided with a pin 125 which enters a slot 126 provided at one end of the plate 1.22.
It will be understood immediately, from the above description, the operation of the gluing device by wetting a tape of adhesive material to be passed over the ring blanks. By the action of the cam 16, the cam lever 87 ,. 88 imparts to the rod 92 a reciprocating motion which moves forward and backward in the machine the positive device 96 with the dampening pan. During its forward movement, this device reaches a position for which the nose, and more particularly le.bloc 112, are located directly above the stack of ring blanks.
The stack of ring blanks is then lifted and the ring blank which sits on top of. the stack comes into contact with a portion of the wet glue tape which at this time presses against block 112, then the stack of ring blanks descends leaving the upper ring blank stuck to the tape. The device 96 is then moved rearward until it reaches a position situated above the device for winding the blank ring on the cigar; at this time, the ring blank is removed from the glued tape, removing some of the tape's glue and the folding mechanism then applies the ring blank to the cigar.
In order to present to each strip blank a new section of the glued tape, a device has been provided for intermittently moving the tape so that a new section of the tape is in front of the stack of ring blanks each time. movement of ascent of it. This intermittent advance movement of the tape is made during the movement of the device 96 forwards. Fig. 10 shows the device 96 at the extreme limit of its forward movement, just after the tape advancing movement has occurred. When the device 96 is in its rear position, the parts occupy the position shown in FIG. 9, with the finger 116 folded over the part of the tape which has been used.
When the device 96 moves towards the front of the machine, it moves the ribbon whose upper strand is stopped by the finger 116 and brings a new section of the ribbon under the block 112, to come into contact with the blank. top ring of the battery. As the forward movement continues, spindle 125 has reached the end of slot 126 of cam plate 122 and therefore drives this cam plate, forcing spindle 117 of finger 116 to be mounted on the ramp-cam 123; the finger 116 is thus lifted and allows the tape to pass under it and to exit the machine by passing over the upper face 127 of the guide 107 of the tape.
There is shown at 128 a plate receiving the cigar during the operation of fitting the ring. This plate is provided with an upper plate 129 (FIG. 7) which extends towards the rear and ends by forming a bearing 130 in which the support table 131 of the cigar is pivotally mounted. The table 131 is provided with a notched portion 132 through which the ring blank folding fingers act, as will be explained below. A spring 133 re normally pushes the table 131 upwards and this as2ensional movement of the table is limited by a pin 134.
To allow the cigars to sit properly on the table for the purpose of fitting the ring, an end guide 1.35 and a side guide 136 have been provided. Clamping screws 137 (fig. 1 and 8) allow the position of these guides to be adjusted to take into account the various dimensions: cigars; the table is provided with a slot 139 under each guide and pins 140 carried by each guide penetrate. In these slots to prevent the fence, pivot on the set screws 137 and come out of alignment.
The stage 128 can move vertically and is provided with a rod 141: directed downwards, moving: in guides 142 and 143 against a spring 144, the movement of the stage upwards being limited by a pin 146: which passes through the rod 141. A guide pin 202 starts from the stage 128 in a downward direction and maintains the stage in the desired alignment.
From: each side of the plate 128 is fixed a protruding part 147 on which the end in the form of a loop of a strip 148 serving for the positioning of the ring is clipped; these bands 148 pass over the folding fingers 149 and 150, then move downwards, their lower ends being fixed to: tension springs 151 attached to the front plate 2 of the frame. The bands 148 are thus kept under tension at all times.
The finger 150 for winding the blank-of the ring pivots 152 at the upper end of an arm 153. A leaf spring 151 attached to this arm rests against a projection 155 of the finger and maintains the finger. free end of this finger down. The arm 153 is fixed on one end of the shaft 154 on which is fixed a lever: angled having two branches 156 and 156a. The branch 156 is provided at its free end with a roller 157 which: rests on a cam 158 fixed on the shaft 37, by the action of a torsion spring 159 surrounding the shaft end 154 (fig. 1).
The finger 149 for winding the ring blank pivots 160 at the upper end of an arm 161, and a leaf spring 1.54 similar to that used for the finger 150 is pressed against a similar projection 155 of it. The arm 161 is fixed on a shaft end 162, on which is also fixed a lever 168. The lower end of this lever is provided with a -galet 164 which rests on a cam 165 fixed to the shaft 37. A res goes out, of torsion 208 (fig. 11) maintains the ga let 164 against the cam 165.
The lever 163 is fixed to another lever, 166, by means of a bolt 167 -which passes through a slot 168. Of the lever 166. Thanks to this arrangement, the lever 166 is secured to the lever 163. and is therefore obliged @ key to move with it under the influence of the cam 165. The securing of the lever 163 by slot with the lever 166 allows to adjust the relative position of this lever 166 with respect to the lever 163; with a view to .du rat trapage wear between the parts, -and in particular the wear of the cam 165.
At the upper end, of the lever 166 is articulated a connecting rod 169 provided at its end with a slot 170 through which it straddles a pin 171 provided at the end of the arm 156 of the lever, angled 155, 156. Description - @ above will make it easy to understand the operation of the ring winding mechanism.
Examination of fig. 15 to 18, in particular, will allow ide to see how the ring is placed on the cigar. Assuming that a cigar has been placed on the top face of a ring blank 172 and both this and cigar 173 are resting on stage 128, as the stage descends as shown in Subsequently, the ring blank is partially folded back by .the bands 148, as shown by the dotted lines in FIG. 15.
Under the influence of the cam 158, the finger 150 then moves transversely to the cigar and folds the non-glued end of the ring blank onto it (FIG. 16). The cam 165 then forces the finger 149 to move transversely with the cigar and to fold the glued end of the ring blank over the folded non-glued end.
When the cam 165 performs this function and moves the lever 166, the lever pushes the connecting rod 169 towards the lever arm 156a, until the pin 171 comes to the bottom of the slot 170, then raises the roller 157. of the lever 156, .15.6a to make it leave the cam 158 and forces the. finger 150 to move back away from above the cigar.
The shape of the cam 165 forces the finger 149 to move alternately forward and backward transversely to the cigar, several times, on the - ends - of the ring which overlap, with a pressure producing a friction, which tends to bring together the superimposed \ ends of the ring. A pressure-exerting device then comes into action and then causes the superimposed ends of the ring to adhere more securely to one another, as will now be explained.
This pressure device comprises a block of elastic material 174, for example of soft rubber. In order to give the block greater elasticity, this block 174 is provided at 175 with a central opening. This opening is preferably triangular in shape and the operation of this block, especially when used for a small diameter cigar, is shown in fig. 19.
It can be seen that when the block 174 is lowered onto the cigar with a certain pressure, its lower surface flexes or conforms to the contour of the cigar, which ensures uniform pressure on the ring placed on the cigar, without twisting or damaging the cigar. -The elastic block 174 of the pressure device is fixed to one end of a pivoting arm 176 which is articulated at 177 (FIG. 4). The arm 17.6 is provided with a finger 178 which projects rearwardly and terminates directly above a push rod 179 movable in a guide 180 forming part of the movable arm <B> 57. </ B >
In 181 is placed an angled lever provided with a cam roller 182 which rolls on the ramp face of a cam 183, fixed to the shaft 34. The angled lever 181 is provided with a finger 184 - which can come in. taken with the lower end of the push rod 179 to bring the latter in the high position in the guide 180, in order to allow it to make the finger 178 blink when the arm 57 is raised and then cause the arm 57 to blink. 'lowering the elastic block. 174 to the cigar fitted with its ring,
in order to apply pressure on the superimposed ends of the ring of the station.
The positions of the push rod 179 in the guide 180 are determined by a small engagement roller 185 which is urged by a spring 187 in contact with the surface of the. push rod, being housed in a notch 186 of the guide 180. At 1.88 is a bracket which is intended to serve as a stop for a collar 189 fixed to the push rod 179 and to limit the movement of ascent of the rod 179. The push rod <B> 179 </B> is provided with a notch 190 in which the roller 185 engages to determine the high position of the push rod 179 in the guide 180.
After the ring has been fitted and the parts have reached the position shown in fig. 18, the push rod 179 oc cupant in the high position in the guide 180 is driven by the arm 57 upwards and forced to lower the elastic block 17.1 onto the cigar provided with its ring and to exert on it. This is up-and-down pressure which tends to securely fix the overlapping ends of the ring to each other.
When the. push rod 179 has taken its high position in the guide 180, by the effect of the finger, 184, the roller 185 is engaged in the notch 190 of the rod. The arm 57, while rising, drives the push rod 179 which acts on the finger 178 of the pressure arm <B> 179 </B> until the collar 189 of the push rod 179 meets the. console 188; the roller 185 then disengages from the notch 190, so that the push rod remains immobile. while the guide 180 can continue its upward movement.
The foregoing description makes it easy to understand the general operation of this machine for the placement of cigar rings.
When the helical toothed wheel 12 is actuated continuously, directly by the motor shaft 5, the combined device for gluing and driving the Eaglies blanks also operates continuously, so that the adhesive material tape 106, after wetting, does not have the opportunity to dry. Under the effect of a downward pressure on the pedal which pulls the rod 26 downwards, the clutch member 22 is pulled back from the notch 21 of the clutch claw 18 (fig. 11). , so that the spring 19 drives this claw back into the,:
eavity 31 of the, wheel at. helical den ture 12, and the shaft 18 is then rotated, which activates the other mechanisms of the machine.
A 173 cigar is placed on the. table 131, directly below the tab 52 and directly above the fingers 149 and 150 used to wind the ring blank.
The device ù, adhesive tape then moves forward into the position shown in FIG. 10. This brings a fresh section of the adhesive tape under the block 112 of the nose 98 as this movement occurs. When the adhesive tape device has reached the end of its forward stroke, the block 112 is directly above one end of the. stack of ring blanks 6-1. The arm 57 carrying the ring blank magazine is then moved upward, causing the ring blank at the top of stack 64 to come into contact with the party, wet with the adhesive tape at the bottom. -this lower of block 112.
The arm 57 then begins its downward movement and the upper ring blank of the stack remains stuck to the tape; the adhesive tape device carrying this ring blank then begins its rearward movement and reaches a point located directly above the plate 128 and the bands for the positioning of the ring -which start from this plate tine. In order that the band blank carried by the adhesive tape can be guided in its movement towards the folding fingers of the ring blank, each of the fingers 149 and 150 is provided with a plate 204 having an edge 205 folded towards the bottom.
As the ring blanks are sometimes irregular or curved, the folded edge 205 of this plate 204 guides the ring blank suitably into its position above the folding fingers of the ring blank. .
The downward movement of the arm 57 continuing, the arm 51 which is mounted on the same shaft as the arm 57, brings its tab 52 into contact with the cigar resting on the table 181. The table 131 then tilts down and the middle part of the cigar strikes the ring blank held on the adhesive tape and tears the latter from the tape, which releases adhesive material to it at the end of the ring blank detached from the tape.
The fingers 149 and 150 for winding the ring come into action and by means of the bands 148, they apply the ring to the cigar, as shown in fig. 15 to 18 inclusive, and as explained above.
The elastic pressure block 174 then descends and exerts additional pressure on the cigar provided with its ring, after which the parts of the machine assume the position shown in FIG. 4, with the cigar provided with its ring resting on the table 131. To give more elasticity to the movement of the arm 57 during its vertical back-and-forth movement, a spring 191 is provided which abuts against the underside. of the arm 57 and which surrounds a rod 192 extending vertically, passing through the arm 157 and serving as a guide thereto. .
It can be seen that when the clutch pedal is released, the clutch member 22 engages in the notch 21 and removes the clutch claw 18, which stops the machine, except as regards the adhesive tape device, which remains in action continuously, as previously indicated. The operator can therefore produce the clutch after the installation of each ring, or in other words he can adjust using the clutch the speed of the operation of placing the rings. The operation of fitting the rings is also repeated. the machine has been in operation for a long time.
