Abstract
An apparatus and method for irradiation of fluid with electromagnetic radiation, and in particular to an apparatus and method for irradiation of blood or other body fluids with ultraviolet radiation is provided. The apparatus comprises a housing having disposed therein at least one mount adapted for receiving an ultraviolet radiation source and at least one holder adapted for receiving a container of the fluid. The housing is adapted for operability between a first position, wherein the container may be placed in the holder and a second position, wherein the housing may form a capsule. The apparatus further comprises a control assembly for powering the ultraviolet radiation source. At least a portion of the inner surface of the housing is capable of reflecting the ultraviolet radiation.
Claims (42)
1. An apparatus for irradiation of a fluid by ultraviolet radiation, said apparatus comprising:
a housing having disposed therein at least one mount adapted for receiving an ultraviolet radiation source and at least one holder adapted for receiving a container of said fluid, and said housing being adapted for operability between a first position, wherein said container can be placed in said holder and a second position, wherein said housing forms a capsule, and a control assembly for powering said ultraviolet radiation source, wherein at least a portion of the inner surface of said housing is capable of reflecting said ultraviolet radiation.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said housing comprises a pair of housing portions hingedly connected to allow movement of said portions between said first and second positions.
3. The apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said control assembly is provided outside of said housing.
4. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 3, further comprising a base assembly adapted for mounting said housing, said control assembly, or both thereon.
5. The apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said base assembly further comprises a support having a pivot and a mounting surface for mounting said housing.
6. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said support is adapted to oscillate said housing.
7. The apparatus according to claim 4 or claim 5, wherein said base assembly further comprises at least one mechanical means to oscillate said housing.
8. The apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said mechanical means is a motor with gear and cam mechanism.
9. The apparatus according to claim 7 or claim 8, wherein said mechanical means is adapted to displace the housing in a periodic circular motion.
10. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein said control assembly comprises ballasts for said ultraviolet radiation sources.
11. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein said control assembly further comprises actuating means for controlling said mechanical means.
12. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein said control assembly further comprises at least one timing-control means for controlling said ultraviolet radiation source, said mechanical means, or both.
13. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein said control assembly further comprises shut-off means for preventing the operation of said ultraviolet radiation source, said mechanical means, or both when said housing is in said first position.
14. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein said control assembly further comprises a microprocessor.
15. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein said housing further comprises a sensor for monitoring output of said ultraviolet radiation source.
16. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 15, further comprising temperature-regulating means for maintaining the environment enclosed by said housing within a pre-determined temperature range.
17. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein said temperature-regulating means comprises ventilation ducts.
18. The apparatus according to claim 16 or claim 17, wherein said temperature-regulating means further comprises a cooling element, a heating element, or both.
19. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 18, wherein at least a portion of said inner surface of said housing is made of or coated with a reflective material.
20. The apparatus according to claim 19, wherein said reflective material is aluminum or silver.
21. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 20, wherein inner surface of said housing has a faceted-elliptical cross-section.
22. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 21, wherein said mount further comprises at least one focusing lens for focusing said ultraviolet radiation onto said container.
23. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 22, wherein said container, said holder, or both are made of an ultraviolet radiation permeable material.
24. The apparatus according to claim 23, wherein said ultraviolet radiation permeable material is quartz, or a polymeric material.
25. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 24, wherein said ultraviolet radiation source is an ultraviolet lamp.
26. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 25, wherein said container is a syringe.
27. The apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 26, wherein said holder is a tray designed for slidable access when said housing is in said first position.
28. A syringe barrel having a proximal end for receiving a plunger rod assembly;
a hollow central body portion capable of holding fluids; and a distal end having a passage for receiving and dispensing said fluids from said hollow central body portion, wherein said central body portion is of a rounded-rectangular or a racetrack-shaped cross-section and a chamber is disposed on said distal end of the syringe barrel in the vicinity of said passage and is in fluid communication with said central body portion and said passage.
a hollow central body portion capable of holding fluids; and a distal end having a passage for receiving and dispensing said fluids from said hollow central body portion, wherein said central body portion is of a rounded-rectangular or a racetrack-shaped cross-section and a chamber is disposed on said distal end of the syringe barrel in the vicinity of said passage and is in fluid communication with said central body portion and said passage.
29. The syringe barrel according to claim 28, further comprising at least one weighted object contained within said barrel, and capable of moving freely within the confines of said barrel.
30. The syringe according to claim 29, wherein said weighted body is dimensioned to be accommodated in said chamber of said barrel and is dimensioned to be larger than the diameter of said passage.
31. The syringe barrel according to claim 29 or 30, wherein said weighted body is spherical in shape.
32. The syringe barrel according to any one of claims 29 to 31, wherein said weighted body is made of an inert material.
33. The syringe barrel according to any one of claims 28 to 32, wherein said passage is positioned centrally on said chamber.
34. The syringe barrel according to any one of claims 28 to 33, wherein a male luer fitting is affixed to said chamber for attaching an injection needle on a connector equipped with a tubing conduit.
35. A plunger rod assembly for use in the syringe barrel according to any one of claims 28 to 34, said plunger rod assembly comprising a plunger head portion and a plunger rod portion, wherein said plunger rod portion is removably attached to said plunger head portion.
36. A syringe comprising a syringe barrel and a plunger rod assembly, wherein said syringe barrel has a proximal end for receiving said plunger rod assembly; a hollow central body portion capable of holding fluids; and a distal end having a passage for receiving and dispensing the fluids from said hollow central body portion, wherein the central body portion is of a rounded-rectangular or a racetrack-shaped cross-section and a chamber is disposed on said distal end of said syringe barrel in the vicinity of said passage and is in fluid communication with the central body portion and the passage; and said plunger rod assembly comprises a plunger head portion and a plunger stem portion, wherein the plunger stem portion is removably attached to the plunger head portion.
37. A method for irradiation of blood with ultraviolet radiation comprising the steps of:
withdrawing a pre-determined amount of blood from a user using a syringe comprising a syringe barrel and a plunger rod assembly, wherein said syringe barrel has a proximal end for receiving said plunger rod assembly; a hollow central body portion capable of holding fluids; and a distal end having a passage for receiving and dispensing the fluids from said hollow central body portion, wherein the central body portion is of a rounded-rectangular or a racetrack-shaped cross-section and a chamber is disposed on said distal end of said syringe barrel in the vicinity of said passage and is in fluid communication with the central body portion and the passage; and said plunger rod assembly comprises a plunger head portion and a plunger stem portion, wherein the plunger stem portion is removably attached to the plunger head portion;
removing a first needle of said syringe and fitting a cap in place of said needle on said syringe;
removing said plunger stem portion from a plunger rod assembly leaving said plunger head portion in said syringe barrel;
placing said syringe in an irradiation apparatus;
energizing the irradiation source in order to irradiate said blood;
removing said syringe from said irradiation apparatus after the completion of the radiation;
reattaching said plunger stem portion to said plunger head portion;
replacing said cap with a second needle; and, returning the ultraviolet treated blood to said user.
withdrawing a pre-determined amount of blood from a user using a syringe comprising a syringe barrel and a plunger rod assembly, wherein said syringe barrel has a proximal end for receiving said plunger rod assembly; a hollow central body portion capable of holding fluids; and a distal end having a passage for receiving and dispensing the fluids from said hollow central body portion, wherein the central body portion is of a rounded-rectangular or a racetrack-shaped cross-section and a chamber is disposed on said distal end of said syringe barrel in the vicinity of said passage and is in fluid communication with the central body portion and the passage; and said plunger rod assembly comprises a plunger head portion and a plunger stem portion, wherein the plunger stem portion is removably attached to the plunger head portion;
removing a first needle of said syringe and fitting a cap in place of said needle on said syringe;
removing said plunger stem portion from a plunger rod assembly leaving said plunger head portion in said syringe barrel;
placing said syringe in an irradiation apparatus;
energizing the irradiation source in order to irradiate said blood;
removing said syringe from said irradiation apparatus after the completion of the radiation;
reattaching said plunger stem portion to said plunger head portion;
replacing said cap with a second needle; and, returning the ultraviolet treated blood to said user.
38. The method according to claim 37, further comprising the step of:
oscillating said housing.

39. The method according to claim 37 or claim 38, wherein at least one weighted object is provided inside said syringe barrel.
40. The method according to any one of claims 37 to 39, further comprising the step of:
directing said radiation to said syringe by means of reflectors disposed on the inner surface of said irradiation apparatus.

41. A system for irradiation of a fluid by ultraviolet radiation comprising:
an apparatus comprising a housing having disposed therein at least one mount adapted for receiving an ultraviolet radiation source and at least one holder adapted for receiving a container of said fluid, and said housing being adapted for operability between a first position, wherein said container can be placed in said holder and a second position, wherein said housing forms a capsule, and a control assembly for powering said ultraviolet radiation source, wherein at least a portion of the inner surface of said housing is capable of reflecting said ultraviolet radiation;
and, a syringe comprising a syringe barrel and a plunger rod assembly, wherein said syringe barrel has a proximal end for receiving said plunger rod assembly; a hollow central body portion capable of holding fluids; and a distal end having a passage for receiving and dispensing the fluids from said hollow central body portion, wherein the central body portion is of a rounded-rectangular or a racetrack-shaped cross-section and a chamber is disposed on said distal end of said syringe barrel in the vicinity of said passage and is in fluid communication with the central body portion and the passage; and said plunger rod assembly comprises a plunger head portion and a plunger stem portion, wherein the plunger stem portion is removably attached to the plunger head portion.

and, a syringe comprising a syringe barrel and a plunger rod assembly, wherein said syringe barrel has a proximal end for receiving said plunger rod assembly; a hollow central body portion capable of holding fluids; and a distal end having a passage for receiving and dispensing the fluids from said hollow central body portion, wherein the central body portion is of a rounded-rectangular or a racetrack-shaped cross-section and a chamber is disposed on said distal end of said syringe barrel in the vicinity of said passage and is in fluid communication with the central body portion and the passage; and said plunger rod assembly comprises a plunger head portion and a plunger stem portion, wherein the plunger stem portion is removably attached to the plunger head portion.
42. The use of the system according to claim 41 in irradiating a blood sample.
