Abstract

An apparatus for determining a period of time of an acoustic wave in a fluid in a pipe where the wave is provided to the fluid from the outside of the pipe and a signal is obtained corresponding to when the wave has traversed the pipe and the fluid therein, and signal processing means measures the period of time the wave is in the fluid based on the signal, the signal processing means being in communication with means providing the acoustic wave. Also disclosed is a method and apparatus for determining sound velocity of fluid flowing in a pipe comprising transmitting acoustic energy into the fluid flowing in the pipe such that the energy takes a path through the pipe, receiving the acoustic energy after it passes out of the fluid, measuring the time the energy takes to pass through the fluid, and identifying sound velocity of the fluid from the time measured. The apparatus also allows determination of the temperature of the fluid.

Claims (6)

1. An apparatus for determining a period of time of an acoustic wave in a fluid in a pipe comprising:
means for providing the wave to the fluid from outside of the pipe and producing a signal corresponding to when the wave has traversed the pipe and the fluid therein, said providing means disposed outside of the pipe; and signal processing means for measuring the period of time the wave is in the fluid based on the signal from the providing means, said signal processing means in communication with said providing means.
2. A method for determining sound velocity of fluid floating in a pipe comprising the steps of flowing fluid through the pipe;
transmitting acoustic energy into the fluid flowing in the pipe such that the energy takes a diametrical path through the pipe;
receiving the acoustic energy after it passes out of the fluid;
measuring the time the energy takes to pass through tree fluid; and identifying sound velocity of the fluid from the time.
3. An apparatus for determining the speed of sound in a fluid flowing in a pipe comprising:
means for actively testing the flowing fluid with energy and producing a test signal corresponding to the speed of sound of the fluid, said testing means in contact with the pipe; and signal processing means for determining the speed of sound of the flowing fluid based on the test signal, said testing means in communication with said signal processing means.
4. An apparatus as described in claim 3 wherein the testing means comprises:

a first transducer for transmitting acoustic signals through the fluid, said first transducer in acoustic contact with said pipe;
a second transducer for receiving the acoustic signals transmitted by the first transducer, said second transducer disposed in an opposing relationship with said second transducer such that the acoustic signals transmitted by the first transducer travel on a diametric path with respect to the pipe to the second transducer.
5. An apparatus for determining the transverse velocity of fluid in a pipe comprising:
means for actively testing the flowing fluid with energy and producing a test signal corresponding to the temperature of the fluid, said testing means in contact with the pipe;
and signal means for determining the temperature of the fluid based on the test signal, said testing means in communication with said signal processing means.
6. An apparatus for measuring the temperature of a flowing fluid in a pipe comprising:
means for actively testing the flowing fluid with energy and producing a test signal corresponding to the temperature of the fluid, said testing means in contact with the pipe;
signal processing means for determining the temperature of the fluid based on the test signal, said testing means in communication with said signal processing means, wherein the testing means comprises:
a first transducer for transmitting acoustic signals through the fluid, said first transducer in acoustic contact with said pipe;
a second transducer for receiving the acoustic signals transmitted by the first transducer, said second transducer disposed in an opposing relationship with said first transducer such that the acoustic signals transmitted by the first transducer travel on a substantially diametric path with respect to the pipe to the second transducer, and including means for detecting pressure of the fluid in the pipe, said detecting means in communication with said signal processing means.
