Abstract
ABSTRACT
A coffee or tea machine having at least one heating unit, wherein the heating unit comprises a multilayered heating foil consisting of electrically conductive plastic foils applied to both sides of a middle layer of carbon particles. The exterior of the heating foil may be covered with an insulating layer.
The heating foil of this design is extremely flat, so that size requirements in a coffee or tea machine become less important, and inherently prevents overheating because its resistance increases with temperature.

Description
2~225~
This invention concerns a cof~ee or tea machine with at least one heatiny unit, for example to heat a warming plate, the brewiny water and the like.
Up to now, the heating units of coffee or tea machines with at least one heating unit have been designed for the relevant specific application.
For example, different heating units are used for continuous flow heaters and to heat warming plates.
The heating units used are often also relatively large so that the need for a laryer amount of space has to be taken into account in designing coffee or tea machines.
Temperature-dependent control elements often have to be provided for heating units of coffee or tea machines in order to ensure that they are definitely prevented from overheating.
This invention is based on the problem of avoiding all of the aforesaid disadvantages and of creating a coffee or tea machine which does not require complicated control systems for the heating unit or units and which requires that only very little consideration be given to the size and shape of the heating unit or units in designing the machine.
In accordance with the invention, a heating unit made of a multilayer heating foil consisting of a middle layer of carbon particles embedded in plastic as well as of electrically conductive plastic foils which are applied to both sides of the middle layer are used as a solution to this problem.
-2~ 2 ~ ~
Use of such a hea~ing foil offers a multitu~e of advan tages .
On the one han~, such a heating ~oil is extremely flat and, therefore, is suitable to be adapted optimally for different application without excessive consideration having to be given to the design of the parts to be heated. In addition, such a heating foil is itself secured to some extent against overheating, because the carbon particles, which serve as elèctrical resistance elements, alter the distances between themselves when heated and, therefore, increase the resistance. This increase in resistance prevents the heating foil overheating even without special control elements being required.
Depending Oll the application, it may be necessary to cover the exterior of the heating foil with insulating layers. However, the side facing the appliance may also be insulated.
This is especially important if the heating foil is brought into contact with other electrically conductive materials. For example this may be the case if the heating foil is used to form a continuous flow heater.
The present invention thus provides a coffee or tea machine with at least one heating unit, for example to heat a warming plate, to heat the brewing water, and the like, characterized by the use of a heating unit made of a multilayered heating foil consisting of a middle layer made of carbon particles embedded in plastic as well as of electrically conductive plastic foils which are applied to both sides of the middle layer.

l'he enclosed drawings illuc;trate an embodiment of the invention which is described in more detail below.
The figures show:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view of a coffee or tea machine with a continuous flow heater and a warming plate;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the warming plate with the continuous flow heater located underneath it; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the detail designated III in Fig. 2.
The coffee or tea machine illustrated in Fig. 1 and designated overall with the reference number 20 has a fresh water container l, a continuous flow heater 2, an ascending pipe 3, a discharge pipe 4, a filter holder 5 and a pot 6.
The pot 6 sits on a warming plate 7 in the base area of the coffee or tea machine 20. In accordance with the known principle of coffee or tea machines, the water contained in the fresh water container 1 is heated in the continuous flow heater 2, fed via the ascsnding pipe 3 and the discharge pipe 4 into the filter holder 5 from which, after the aroma has been extracted from an aroma carrier li]ce coffee or tea, the beverage produced is collected in the pot 6. The beverage in the pot 6 is then kept at a high temperature by the warming plate 7.
As Fig. 2 clearly shows, the heating units required to operate the continuous flow heater 2 are made of multilayered heating foils.
~, 20~225~
In the case of the aontinuous ~low heater 2, an appropriate pipe section of a metal pipe 20 is covered with such a multilayered heating foil.
The multilayered heating ~oil for both the continuous flow heater 2 and the warming plate 7 consists of a middle la~er 8 made o~ carbon particles embedded in plastic as well as of electricall~ conductive plastic ~oils 9 which are applied to both sides of the middle layer. Ideally, the exterior of the heating foil is covered with insulating layers 10.
In general, the multilayered heating ~oil is so thin that the heating units required to operate the continuous flow heater 2 and/or the warming plate 7 require very little space. The heating foil may consist of pipe-shaped sections in order to cover the continuous flow heater 2.
The multilayered heating foil also has the advantage that control elements are not required in order to limit the temperature, because the distance between the carbon particles of the middle layer 8 which serve as a resistance elements increases when the particles are heated, resulting in a corresponding increase in resistance. This increase in resistance does not allow the temperature to exceed a pre-determined limit.
Consequently, such a multilayered heating foil is an ideal heating unit for coffee or tea machines, because it is both space-saving and can be used easily and without additional control elements to prevent overheating.
