Abstract

Roll with a Rubber or Rubber-Like Sheath for Coating or Other Applicator Devices ABSTRACT
A roll for a coating machine, this roll being provided with a rubber or rubber-like sheath surrounding a cylindrical or hollow-cylindrical core of metal, has a heating device for increasing the temperature of the core beyond the temperature of the sheath.

Description

2 ~

Roll with a Rubber or Rubber-Like Sheath for Coatin~
or Other Applicator Devices The present invention relates to a roll for use in a substrate (e.g. paper or the like) applicator.
Rolls of this type are used in many areas where paper or cardboard are coated in a pressure gap formed between two rolls. In general, the amount of coating material applied is small (low specific weight per unit area). The coating materials usually contain a considerable amount of water as solvent.
In the case of rolls which are covered by a plastic, such as polyurethane or polyamide, there is the danger that damage can occur through hydrolysis, especially to the bonding layer, which forms the joint between the plastic sheath and the rnetal core of the roll. In addition, the plastic sheath can soften, which leads to a change in its hardness and to a loss of strength. This, of course, also considerably reduces the service life of a roll of ~is type, which means that it will have to be replaced prematurely.
In the past, it has been proposed to utilize heatable rolls. Although a wide variety of designs for heatable rolls is known, these are rolls of pure metal, which must have a high surface temperature for use, for example, in calenders, one of the main areas of application.

Accordingly, the present invention provides an applicator for applying a spreading or coating compound to a substrate, the applicator comprising a coating roll or mating roll consisting of a core and a sheath, the core being of metal, preferably steel, and the sheath being of rubber or a rubber-like material, characterized in that the metal core (1) has a temperature at least 0.1 K higher than that of the sheath (2), at least in the area of the boundary surface between the core and the sheath.
Typically, the s~reading or coa~ng composition is forlTIulated on the basis of pigments or starch to be applied to a subst~ate such as paper or cardboard.
Thus, the roll according to the inven~on is intended to minimize this disadvantage, a goal whlch i~ ~cco~p11~hcd ~-ntl-11y In th~t tho eoro of the roll l- heated to a t~p-r~tur- hl~her than th-t of thc h--th of p1-ctic plac-d ~round it For thl~ purpwc, lt le po~lb10 to ho~t th- ro1l dlrectly by ~an~ of trea~ of thermcl medium or by ~-an- of h--tlns rod- or co~l~ IndIrect ~o~Juro~ or m~-n~ for lncro~lng th- t-mp-r-ture oi' th- cora, whlch i- profcrably and u~u lly m-dc of ~ tal, o-n lco bc uced me roll according to the invention substantially prevents an excessive amount of w-ter from penotr-t~ng fron the eurf c~ of th~ roll h~-th nd fro~ the coat In~ co~pound lnto the ~he-th of the roll ln the directlon tow-rd the co~e Of cour~e, thl- proc~-- In ~t~-lf proc--d- v ry lovly, but tlll too qulckly for - ~Q~3~i ~n ~cc-pt~bl~ ~erv~ce ll~e of th- roll In Indu-tri-l pplic-tion- ln partlc-ul~r, it ~ neces~ary for the ~urf ce te per-ture of the core to be only sli~htly higher th~m tho ~urface t-~per-turo of th roll heath, proceedlng r-dl~lly oue~lard In goner-l, ~ t~p-r-tur dlff r-nc- of or- th~n 50 K will not b~ wed Embodiments of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

A temperature difference between the surface of the sheath and the surface of the core of 0.1 K is suitable for establishing a temperature gradient therebetween, however, it is preferable to have a difference in the range of 1-20 K.

While not wishing to be bound by any particular theory or mode of operation, it is believed that although some water molecules still arrive at the adhesion layer of the roll covering (plastic sheath), the amount arriving there is not large enough to form "moisture nests". Thus, in the present roll, the small amount of water reaching the adhesive layer cannot exert a substantially damaging effect in the roll.
The present roll can be used advantageously in a coating system with two press rolls according, for example, to U.S. Patent No. 4,848,268 or with at least one mating roll of a feed device for the coating compound, such as, for examp]e, that according to U.S. Patent 4,250,211, this mating roll guiding the web of product, e.g., especially a web of paper or cardboard, around a certain wrap angle.
