Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

In a strand guide arrangement to be used in a contin-uous casting plant for supporting and guiding a cast strand of rectangular or square cross section, including two oppo-sitely arranged guideways formed of parallelly arranged rollers, and further two oppositely arranged guideways also formed of parallelly arranged rollers which are arranged at right angles to the rollers of the first two guideways, in which two parallelly arranged guideways include cantilever rollers, the cantilever rollers of two oppositely arranged guideways comprise overmountedly arranged roller bodies for supporting the edge regions of the cast strand, which at least with part of their circumference project into between the guideway rollers arranged at right angles to them, and come close to the latter with little play therebetween.

Description

The invention relates to a stxand guide for a contin-uous cas-tin(J plan-t for supporting and guiding a cast strand of a rectan~ular or square cross section, wherein two guide-ways formed of rollers arranged parallelly to one another lie opposite each other, and two further oppositely arranged guideways also formed of rollers arranged parallelly to one another are provided whose rollers are arranged at right angles to the rollers of the first two guideways, and two opposing guideways comprise cantilever rollers.
` 10 From German Offenlegungsschrift No. 1,458,132 it is known to provide foot rollers at continuous casting moulds, which support the strand at all four side faces. The rol-lers, at their ends, are held in cheeks which are fastened immediately at the mould. In the edge regions of the strand the latter is not supported by the rollers, since it is not possible with the rollers held in cheeks at the ends, to extend the roller as far as to the edge of the strand; the rollers are in each other's way.
It is furthermore known from U.S. patent No. 3,268,956 to support a strand slab at all sides, the rollers for supporting two slab sides bordering at each other being mounted together in a single rigid supporting stand, which is movable in the direction of the two slab sides bordering at each other, The xollers provided for supporting the nax-row sides of the slab are designed as overmounted roller bodies which, with one end, are directed to the rollers mounted at the opposite part of the s-tand and serving for supporting the broad sides of the slab, and with -their other end directed to the rollers supporting the broad sides and mounted in the same stand, leave free a region in which the ~3~8~

edge of the strand is not supported. In particular when us:Lng rollers oE a d:iameter as small as possible - what results in the advantage of a short unsupported length between two neighbouring rollers - the unsupported region at the edge of the cast slab, with the known roller arrangement, becomes greater, since the two rollers together fastened in one supporting stand cannot be moved closer to each other, due to the fastening and bearing arrangements.
With modern continuous casting plants, the minimum diameter of the rollers is determined by the necessary outer diameter of the bearings, so that the roller surface projects only slightly beyond the bearings, for which reason moving the rollers supporting the strand at neighbouring areas in one and the same stand closer together is not possible.
The support of the edge region of a cast strand is all the more important with rapid continuous casting plants, since the strand in those regions, in particular if its skin has still a very small thickness - as this -is the case immediately after the extraction of the strand from the mould -is subjected to high strains.
The invention aims at avoiding the disadvantages and difficulties described and has as its object to provide a strand guide of the initially defined kind with which the edge regions of the strand can be supported with-out any problem, strand guiding rollers of small diameters as possible being utilizable.
The invention provides a strand guide arrangement for use in a con tinuous casting plant for supporting and guiding a cast strand of rectangular cross section emerging from a mould, said arrangement including two first oppositely arranged guideways formed of first parallelly arranged rollers, two second oppositely arranged guideways formed of second parallelly arranged rollers, said second parallelly arranged rollers being arranged at right angles ~ ~ .
.,, .~ i 8'7~

to said first parallelly arranged rollers, each oE sald second oppositely arranged guideways comprising a plurality of roller bodies adapted to support a pair oE opposed sides of said cast strand, at least part of the circum-ference of said roller bodies projecting between said first parallelly arranged rollers of said two Eirst parallelly arranged guideways, at least those roller bodies at the ends of said second oppositely arranged guideway being cantilevered and having unsupported ends directed towards said first parallelly arranged rollers and spaced therefrom by a small ~learance.
Suitably, the cantilever rollers are arranged immediately below the mould, where they function as foot rollers supporting the strand (which still has a very sensible strand skin~ at its edge regions against bulging.
The rollers advantageously are mounted in supporting stands fastened to the mould side walls.
According to a preferred embodiment, the cantilever rollers are mounted in supporting stands which are movable independently of the holding devices of the rollers arranged at right angles to the cantilever rollers~
whereby the strand guide can be adapted to various strand dimensions in a - particularly s-imple manner.
The invention will now be described in more detail by way of two embodiments schematically illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figures 1 and 2 each represent a view, the viewing direction extend-ing parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strand guide, onto the strand gulde fastened at the mould~ according to the section I-I of Figure 3; and Figure 3 illustrates a section along line III-III of Figure 1, the strand guiding rollers having been displaced according to a strand format illustrated by dot and-dash lines in Figure 1.
Supporting rollers provided at a continuous casting plant for slabs for supporting the broad sides of the slab ~L311~'7~

and which, over their length, are supported at four spots against a strand guiding stand not illustrated, are denoted by 1. Roller bodies 3 forming the roller 1 are rotatahly threaded on an axle 2, holding devices 4 each being provi.ded between two neighbouring roller bodies 3 as well as at the ends of the roller 1.
For supporting the narrow sides of the slabs, canti-lever rollers 5 are provided, which are formed of two roller bodies 7 that are rotatably threaded on an axle 6. The axle 6 is supported at a stand part 8 between the two over-mountedly arranged roller bodies 7, which stand part is displaceable independently of the stand part carrying the rollers supporting the broad side of the slabs. The length of the roller bodies 7 is dimensioned such that the canti-lever roller 5 formed of the roller bodies 7 is smaller than the narrow side 10 of the slab only by a slight play 9 present at both ends of the cantilever roller 5. The play 9 is dimensioned just as big that the ~antilever rollers 5 can turn without contacting the rollers 1 arranged at a right 20 angle to them.
The cantilever rollers 5, with part of their circum-ference, project into between the rollers 1 arranged at a right angle to them. Thereby it is reache~ that the edge :regions 11 of the slab are supported almost entirely, i.e~
only with the excep~ion of a region resulting from the size of the play 9. It can be seen from Fig. 3 that the sup-porting s-tand 8 is fastened at -the narrow-side wall 1~ of the mould 13, whereby it is possible to displace the canti-lever rollers 5 simultaneously with the displacement of-the narrow-side wall 12, which is effected by means of adjust-: - 4 -:

~3~7~

ment spindles 15 drivable by gears 14, the edge support of the slab always remaining the same.
Instead of the multiply supported rollers 1, it is also possible to provide rollers 16 that are supported only at the ends, as i5 illustrated in Fig. 2. It is also possible to arrange the roller bodies 3 and 7 of the rollers l and 5 rigidly on the axle r and to mount the axle itself rotatably in the supporting stand, in which case bearings are inserted in the holding devices 4 and the stand parts 8.
