Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
Junction piece for electric wiring having a funnel-shaped entry for reception of the cable for appliances to be supplied with current, especially for lights for mines, wherein the junction piece consists of a reception part and an insertion part, which are connected with one another by a screw connection. The two parts and a tubular packing enclose the cable in a manner resistant to compression.

Description

Th0 invention relates to a junction piece for electric wiring, with a funnel-shaped entry for the reception of a wiring cable, for appliances to be supplied with current, especially for a light for mines.
A junction piece for such purposes is already on the market, which after introduction of the cable is screwed into the entry socket of an appli-ance to be supplied with current.
The essential disadvantage of this known arrangement is that first of all a packing ring must be shaped to fit the entry socket and two further rings are necessary for holding this packing ring. A further disadvantage is that upon assembly of this known junction piece the cable is compressed or crushed.
The problem underlying the invention consists in so constructing a junction piece for electric wiring that it is technically inexpensive, can be assembled in a simple manner by an unskilled person, produces a gas-and - vapour pressure proof connection of the cable or wiring with the appliance to be provided with current, and wherein for maintenance or replacement, the cable can be reved from the appliance and if necessary replaced by another -cable.
The invention provides a junction piece for electrical wiring com-20 prising a socket member, a plug member and a substantially tubular sealingmember, the socket member having an internal screw-thread, and the plug member having at one end an external screw-thread adapted to engage the screw-thread of the socket and a cylindrical bore for receiving the sealing member, the socket member having a conical sealing surface and adjacent thereto an annular shoulder, the plug member having at that end facing the socket an annular flange, the sealing member being provided at its end remote from the plug member with a tapering lip adjacent which is an annular collar, the tapering lip being adapted to engage the conical sealing surface, the annular collar being adapted to be engaged on opposite sides between the annular flange 30 of the plug and the annular shoulder of the socket. ~ --1- ~ ' iO73066 The inner diameter of the section of the plug screwed into the sock-et is preferably greater than the inner diameter of the remaining section to receive a tubular section of the sealing member. A washer can be arranged between the annular flange of and the collar of the sealing member.
The section of the plug screwed into the socket preferably has a peripheral groove, in which in the assembled state of the junction piece a locking screw engages.
The plug can also incorporate a peripheral groove for the re- -~
ception of a sealing ring and spaced therefrom a bevelled abutment shoulder for engagement with the inner wall of an entry socket of the appliance to be supplied with current, An annular groove is provided on the plug in the neighbourhood of the shoulder and receives the free end of a yoke, which ~ `
is releasably fastened on the reception part with the assistance of the lock- -ing screw.
The connector suitably consists of metal, plastics or other suit-able material.
The essential advantage of ~his embodiment of the junction piece can be summarised as follows.
Through the cooperation of the annular groove on the plug with the sealing ring contained therein a kind of snap closure is formed, and the -junction piece can be simply inserted in the entry socket of the casing of an appliance to be supplied with current.
Furthermore few movable parts are present, so that rapid assembly and disassembly is ensured. The plug is screwed into the socket and the sealing member with the cable is pressed against the socket, without the elastic sealing member being crushed therein. Undesirable crushing or rota-tion of the sealing member can be prevented in particular through use of a washer provided between the end flange of the plug and the collar of the sealing member lying thereagainst. Additional locking results from the lock-ing screw which, when the plug is screwed into the socket, holds the former ~- i ~-, .

.... .

in position, since it engages a corresponding peripheral groove therein.
In addition rotation-resistant locking results by use of a yoke, which en-gages with its fork-shaped ends in the annular groove of the socket and with the assistance of the locking screw is fastened on an extension arranged on the socket and which can be constructed integrally therewith.
Further advantages will appear from the following description in relation to one embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a longitudinal sectional view of the junction piece.
The junction piece shown in the drawing consists of a socket 1 and a plug 2 cooperating therewith. These two parts are provided with an inner thread 7 and an outer thread 12 respectively and can thus be screwed together. The socket has a flared opening for the cable and adjoining this a conical inner surface 3 which ends at a shoulder 4, the remainder of the socket being cylindrical in form. An extension lS is provided on the re-ception part 1. The extension can be welded to the socket 1 or as in the illustrated embodiment, formed integrally therewith. A locking screw 11 ex-tends from this extension through an appropriate bore 16 and engages in a ~ `
peripheral groove 10, in the screwed-in section of the plug 2. A yoke (not shown) having a projection at right angles to its fork-shaped shanks has a bore through which the locking screw likewise can be screwed. The fork-shaped ends of this yoke can engage in an annular groove 8 of the plug, SQ that when the plug is screwed into the socket and the yoke is set in position, a rota-tion-resistant connection is ensured.
The inner diameter of the section of the plug 2 screwed into the socket is larger than the remaining section, the inner diameter of the latter corresponding to the outer diameter of the cable to be passed through. The larger inner diameter of the plug is formed to receive the cylindrical sec-tion of an elastic sealing member of rubber o~ the like, which is fitted on to the cable. The sealing member 5 is tubular and has an annular collar 6, the outer diameter of which corresponds substantially with the inner diameter :

1~73066 of the cylindrical section of the socket 1. In the locked state this collar 6 fits tightly against the shoulder 4 of the socket 1. The sealing member 5 has a tapered outer surface 6a at its end section, forming a tapering lip which fits against the conical inner surface 3 of the reception part 1.
Wh~n the sealing member 5 is fitted on the cable and is arranged in the plug 2, the plug together with the cable and the sealing member is screw-ed into the socket 1. The end flange 13 of the plug presses the collar 6 of the sealing member firmly against the shoulder 4 of the socket, and causes the tapered outer surface 6a to press more firmly against the conical inner -surface 3 of the socket 1. In order to prevent the elastic sealing member, especially the collar 6, from torsion movement or crushing, a washer 14 is inserted between the end annular flange 13 of the plug and the collar 6 of the sealing member, which washer absorbs the torsional force of the plug 2 during insertion.
After assembly and locking of the junction piece in the above-described manner it is inserted into the entry socket of a casing of the appliance to be supplied with current, where the peripheral groove 9 can be engaged by an associated sealing ring to produce a snap closure. The rela-tively long cylindrical part between the peripheral groove 9 and the in-clined shoulder 17 enables an optimal connection with the casing to be pro- `
duced, the inclined shoulder 17 assisting insertion and locking of the junc-tion piece in the casing.
The illustrated junction piece ensures rapid assembly and dis-assembly and further an extremely pressure tight (gas- and vapour pressure tight) and rotation-resistant connection with the appliance to be supplied with current, without having to use technically expensive means. Screwing in of the plug into the socket is assisted by suitable bevelling surfaces on the tw~ parts, which act as working surfaces for screw spanners or the like.
