Description

SPECIFICATION Pipe fitting This invention relates to a pipe fitting suitable for coupling a plastics pipe to a metal pipe.
According to the present invention there is provided a pipe fitting which includes a body having a bore for a pipe and an annular recess in the bore of greater diameter than said bore for receiving a radial flange of a pipe or pipe spigot which flange is located intermediate the ends of said pipe or spigot, and flange locating means adapted to be affixed to the body of the fitting to secure the flange of the pipe or spigot in said recess. The invention also includes the combination of such a pipe fitting with a said pipe or pipe spigot having a radial flange intermediate its ends.
Generally the pipe or pipe spigot having the radial flange is of metal such as stainless steel or copper in which the radial flange has been formed, e.g. by an upsetting operation.
Preferably the pipe fitting is of plastics material such as polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene or an acetal resin and generally will include a sealing means such as an O-ring which may be located in a suitable recess within the bore of the fitting.
The fitting will generally include means for connecting a plastics pipe thereto in communication with said flanged pipe or pipe spigot and such means may be a bore for receiving the end of a said plastics pipe as a solvent-welded joint or may include plastics pipe engaging means such as a toothed grab ring or a ring such as is described in our copending Patent Application No. (seriai No.
fitted simultaneously herewith.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Fig. 1 is a cross-section of an embodiment of a pipe fitting according to the present invention and Figs. 2 and 3 are respective side elevation and cross-section of a pipe spigot usable in the fitting of the present invention.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a pipe fitting 1 of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride. At its left hand side as viewed in Fig. 1, it comprises a bore 2 for receiving a plastics, e.g. polybutylene, pipe held in position by means of an annular pipeengaging means 3 in the form of a ring the internal diameter of which diminishes when axial pressure is applied thereto and pressure applying means in the form a screw threaded cap 4 adapted to exert pressure on the ring 3 against a spacer ring 5. When the cap 4 is screwed onto the fitting 1 the ring 3 diminishes in internal diameter and engages the pipe located within the bore 2, e.g. by means of inner circumferential teeth adapted to bite into or distort the pipe wall to prevent accidental withdrawal of the pipe from the fitting. Such an arrangement is described in our aforesaid copending Patent Application.
Although a similar arrangement can be employed upon metallic pipe the force required to distort a suitable engaging ring is such that the fitting may not be easily hand-tightenable.
Therefore, to employ the fitting with metallic pipe, the pipe engaging ring 3 can be removed and a metal, e.g. copper or stainless steel spigot 6 introduced into the fitting. The spigot 6 has a radially extending circumferential flange located intermediate its ends, formed by applying suitable axial pressure to a piece of piping, e.g. in an upsetting operation.
The external diameter of the flange 7 is such that it can be secured located in the fitting 1 upon screwing inwardly of the screw-threaded end cap 8 to grip the flange between the end cap and a spacer ring 9. O-rings 10 of neoprene for sealing purposes are suitably disposed within the fitting.
With the plastics pipe securely located in one side of the fitting and the metal spigot equally securely located in the other side the spigot may be then affixed to further metal piping by any suitable means such as a conventional compression joint or sweated joint.
