Abstract

Abstract of the Disclosure An optical fibre is aligned with the active region of an optoelectronic device mounted on a support member by mounting a support member with a bore which is a close fit on a fibre on the moveable member of an actuator, the moveable member moveable along X and Y axes. A further optoelectronic device is also mounted on the moveable member and aligned with the bore. One of the devices is a light emitting device and the other a detector. The two devices are energized and the output from the detector fed to the control circuit of the actuator, the moveable member of the actuator moving along the X and Y axes until a maximum output is obtained from the detector.
The support member with the bore is then fixed to the support member mounting the optoelectronic device.

Claims (5)

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN
EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:-
1. A method of directly aligning a holding member for an optical fibre with an optoelectronic device, comprising:
mounting a first optoelectronic device on a support member within a ring shaped member;
mounting a holding member in the moveable member of an actuator having movement along X and Y axes, said holding member having a bore which is a close fit on an optical fibre;
positioning said holding member on said ring-shaped member with the rim of the holding member in sliding contact with the ring shaped member;
providing a second optoelectronic device on said holding member aligned with said bore, the bore positioned axially between the two devices, one of the devices a light emitting device and the other a detector;
energizing said devices and connecting the output of said detector to the control circuits of the actuator and moving the moveable member of the actuator, and the holding member, along the X and Y axes to a position at which a maximum output level occurs from the detector;
fixing the holding member on the ring shaped member at said position.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, including positioning a tube in said holding member, said tube having a bore which is a close fit on an optical fibre.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1, said first optoelectronic device being a light emitting device, including measuring the light transmitted through said bore, and moving the holding member until said maximum output level occurs, to align said bore with the light emitting region of the light emitting device.
4. A method as claimed in claim 3, including inserting an optical fibre in said bore, an end of the fibre in at least close proximity to the light emitting device, and fixing said fibre in said bore.
5. A method as claimed in claim 4, including monitoring the light transmitted through the fibre as it is inserted in said bore, and fixing said fibre when said light transmission reaches a predetermined value.
