Abstract

By the method, esters of fatty acid with low univalent alcohols are produced by preesterification of glycerides of the fatty acid in the presence of alkaline catalyst using simplified equipment at high preesterification degree. The esters produced have high purity. Untreated oils and fats of natural origin and content of free fatty acids up to 20% are used. The processes occur at room temperature, normal atmospheric pressure and minimum alcohol ressidues. Preesterification is performed in the presence of 0.025-0.045 mols of alkaline or alkali-earth metal compound, preferably sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, soduim or potassium alcoholate, related to 100 g glyceride of the fatty acid. The subsequent purification of the fatty acid ester is made by the addition of 0.3 to 3.0% water by hydration and settlement of the ressidues of the catalyst and any other impurities.
