d'air a diminué.

A SAILING PROPELLER
The present invention relates to a sail thruster allowing
to move any machine thanks to the force of the wind.
Most sailboats tend to lie under the pressure of the wind, so they lose a good part of the propulsive force supplied.
The purpose of this thruster is to orient the thrust
that it applies as low as possible from the center of gravity of the boat and for a large part upwards in order to lighten the sailboat accordingly.
On the other hand, this wing system dispenses with the very restrictive obligation to have reversible sails, left to right, for tacking.
It therefore makes it possible to use asymmetrical aerodynamic surfaces, with lower and upper surfaces, of a much better performance.
This sail propellant is characterized by the fact that it comprises an inclined mast of approximately 45 [deg.], At the end of which a movable wing is established substantially perpendicular thereto.
This wing can move in three directions using a mechanical device connecting the mast and the latter. This canopy can:
1 [deg.] Pivot freely on itself around the mast so that you can always orient yourself facing the wind thanks to a perpendicular and interdependent plane acting as a wind vane.
2 [deg.] Tilting laterally at an angle of plus or minus 45 [deg.] Tending
to bring the sail horizontally thanks to a horizontal tilt axis perpendicular to the mast.
This movement at 45 [deg.] Being controlled by one or more
cables or any other mechanical system.
3 [deg.] Pivot on an axis located in its plane but located in front of the aerodynamic center of the wing in order to be able to be erased only when the wind attacks it from a negative angle of incidence.
The assembly, inclined mast + wing is held up and down and laterally by three guy lines.
The weight of this assembly is balanced by a counterweight, constituted by the crew or any other form of ballast, the latter being overflowed in opposition at the end of a horizontal mast retained by these same shrouds. The integral assembly described above pivots at least 70 [deg.] On either side of the axis of the boat around a small central mast kept vertical with respect to the hull using guy lines or struts.
This arrangement makes it possible to correctly orient the sail according to the wind direction and the speed of the sailboat.
The complete thruster can be installed on any kind of land vehicle or any boat, built in any material.
Its structure or hulls should simply be able to support the weight of the propellant and withstand a certain torque
of capsizing at a standstill. The airfoil can be made of any surface and any material, as soon as suitably shaped, it will develop a sufficient aerodynamic force. The wing will be hollowed out in the middle to allow its movements around the mast.
The accompanying drawings illustrate, by way of example, an embodiment in accordance with the invention.
The propellant is shown mounted on a boat of the trimaran type whose, in operation by a sufficient wind, only the central hull will touch the water. With sufficient sail area and wind, only the fin and the rudder could remain in contact with the water.
- Figure 1 is a front view of the complete sailboat shown in the upwind position called "closer".
- Figure 2 is a top view of the latter at the same speed and provided with transparent sails for clarity of the drawing. Figure 3 is a side view of the sailboat still "upwind".
Figures 4 and 5 show by way of example an embodiment of the mechanical device 4 according to the invention.
Figure 4 shows it seen from above and Figure 5 seen from the side.
For clarity of the drawing, the mast has been shown vertical.
Figure 6 shows the wing seen from above. FIG. 7 represents this wing seen from the side in the downwind navigation position. Figure 8 shows the same wing during a tack. Figure 9 shows the sailboat stopped.
Figures 10 - 11 - 12 - 13 - 14 and 15 show the sailboat
seen from above at different gaits.
The sail propeller shown in the three figures 1 - 2 - 3 comprises:
- a mast 1 inclined by about 45 [deg.] relative to the vertical - a sail plan 2 which supports on its rear the system of
wind vane 3 intended to permanently orient the sail plan
facing the air flow.
The assembly is fixed to the mast by the mechanical device 4, the
detail is repeated below, and which allows the various maneuvers of orientation of the wing.
The latter is arranged so that the position it occupies
the mast at its center corresponds to the center of the aerodynamic thrust (see figure 6).
This wing is in this example made up of two yards 29
(Figure 6) arranged in V and held in this position by
two tubes 30 fixed to the latter at a certain distance from
their junction point.
These two tubes meet at the upper end of the wind vane
(3.).
Two other tubes (31) (Figure 7) starting from the same points on
the yards meet at the lower end of the weather vane
3.
It is on these that the axis 27 is fixed (FIGS. 6 and 8) for fixing the airfoil to the mechanical device (4).
The cables 26 connecting the upper junction point of the tubes 30 with the wind vane to the mechanical device 4.
The sails established on the two yards 29 are held by their sheet points at the end of the wind vane.
It would be desirable for the wing to be designed so that its center of gravity is also as close as possible to its center of wing.
The mast 1 is retained vertically and laterally by the two shrouds 5, themselves fixed by one of their ends to the fixed part of the mechanical device and by the other to the tube 6 for supporting the counterweight.
These shrouds are, for the lateral holding of the mast, kept apart by the tube 7 resting in its center on the small vertical mast 8.
The latter rests by its foot on the pivot 9 integral with the mast 1 and the counterweight tube 6. This small mast 8, held in position
on the hull by means of an articulation linking it to the struts 10, can therefore pivot with the entire propulsion system.
This movement will be possible, by the arrangement of the tubes
10, at least 70 [deg.] On either side of the axis of the central hull. A variant of this system would consist in leaving the small mast 8 fixed and pivoting around it the support pivot 9 and the middle of the
tube 7 retractor shrouds. The guy 11, fixed on the one hand on
the pivot 9, and on the other hand on the fixed part of the mechanical device, is used to control the vertical movement of the mast.
This stay is kept apart by the two tubes 12 fixed on either side of the mast and are themselves held by the two annexed stays 15 (Figure 2).
In this example, the counterweight necessary for balancing the weight of the mast and the airfoil is constituted by the weight of the coxswain seated on the seat 13 itself fixed to the tube 6.
The counterweight in this example is therefore none other than the complete cockpit secured to the rotation of the rigging.
It can therefore also pivot by 70 [deg.] On either side of the center line of the boat.
This adjustment of the angular starboard and port deflection is carried out from the cockpit by the cable of the retainer 14, fixed on the one hand to the tube 6 and on the other hand to the stern of the central hull.
The hoisting of the wing along the mast, the adjustment of its angle of inclination and the control of the various apparatuses necessary for the smooth running of the sailboat are also implemented from the cockpit using cables, pulleys and various fittings provided in the necessary places.
Figures 4 and 5 show by way of example an embodiment of the mechanical device according to the invention. Figure 4 shows it seen from above and Figure 5 seen from the side. For clarity of the drawing, the mast has been shown vertical. The mechanical device and therefore the complete airfoil are hoisted by the halyard 16 (Figure 5) acting on the part 17 which slides along the mast on four rollers 18 until two V-shaped notches provided at its upper part are blocked on the pins
19 (Figure 4) integral with the mast.
The part 17 is then blocked in this position on the mast. The frame 20 held by the two horizontal half-axes 21 can tilt and only along this axis, by 45 [deg.] Relative to the mast. This stroke is regulated by the control cables 22. Fixed to this tilting frame, the circular rail 23 allows the rotation parallel to the latter, of the frame 24, itself being held and guided by the slides 25. The airfoil can then pivot freely under the action of the wind vane.
The shrouds 5 (FIG. 5) necessary for maintaining the mast are
fixed on the part 17. The airfoil is connected to the mechanical device by the two cables 26 and the tube 27 held by the rotary bearings 28. Thus, with this axis placed in front of its aerodynamic center, the airfoil has the possibility of erase in bed
wind in the event of a negative impact. This case is shown in FIG. 8. FIG. 8 shows the same wing erased in the wind bed in the event of a negative impact, such as for example during a tack facing the wind. The two retaining cables 26 are then relaxed. FIG. 9 represents the sailboat at a standstill, lowered wing and relaxed guy lines 5.
In this regard, it would be desirable that during the raising and lowering of the wing, hoisted by the halyard 16, the traction is carried out on the end 32 of this same halyard, passing through a pulley fixed on the mechanical device, this in order to relieve the
mast of the weight of the wing as long as the shrouds are not yet tensioned.
It should be noted that during this maneuver, the mechanical device and therefore the airfoil are placed horizontally by means of an elastic return or any other system capable of achieving this result.
It can also be useful to mount the mast foot on a horizontal axis in order to be able to bring it vertical to reduce the size of the sailboat when stationary or to restore its trim when the pilot leaves his seat. It is also possible to slide the pilot's seat on the counterweight tube, when
the raising or lowering of the sails, always in order to keep the trim of the boat constant at a standstill.
The length of the mast will be calculated according to the desired height of the sail, in the road position, relative to the water.
The wing can be fitted at its ends with small profiled floats allowing it to be erased by pivoting in the event of immersion under a wave or following an accidental list.
It can also be provided, with a sufficient mast length, to bring the sail vertically in order to take advantage of its entire surface for propulsion in light breezes. All the wing maneuvers can be made automatic by all the control means already known.
Thanks to these provisions, the sailboat being stationary, sail hoisted, the counterweight naturally balances the weight of the sail established at the end of the mast. The sailboat therefore remains horizontal. As soon as the wind exerts pressure on the sail plane inclined at 45 [deg.], The mast being necessarily oriented at a certain angle towards the front of the boat, the latter begins to advance.
Consequently, the drift plane of the hull in motion is supported on the water, thus creating following the opposite action of the wing a certain torque of capsizing.
This couple fought on classic sailboats by the recall of the crew (dinghies), the recall of the ballast to the gite (keelboats) or, even the immersion of a float or a bearing plane under the wind
(multihulls), is here simply canceled by the modification of the inclination of the wing.
By reducing the angle which separates it from the horizontal, we direct the vélique thrust more upwards. In doing so, the mast is relieved by the weight exerted at its end, thereby helping to keep the boat horizontal by the action of the counterweight which has not varied.
The trim of the sailboat is thus always ensured by the simple
game of a lever controlled from the cockpit, it only remains to ensure the orientation of the mast and therefore of the wing according to the desired speed.
This maneuver is represented by the six figures 11 - 12 -
13 - 14 and 15 which show the sailboat seen from above, in different positions relative to the wind.
The axis A A 'represents the axis of the sail plane. The thick arrows represent the direction of the wind. Simple arrows, direction
Of the boat. To fully understand the different phases, it is necessary to keep in mind that the tilt axis of the mechanical device 21 (shown here by a bold line), and therefore of the airfoil, always remains in the same position relative to the mast , what
that this is the orientation of this wing relative to said mast.
In FIG. 10, the sailboat is shown in the downwind position,
the mast left free of its movements then placing itself naturally in the axis of the air flow and therefore towards the front of the boat, this thanks
to the thrust on the wing. It swivels freely, remains maintained facing the wind thanks to the vane 3.
At this gait, as well as all the so-called "bearing" gaits,
the axis A A 'of the airfoil remaining perpendicular to the inclination axis
mechanical device, the latter is therefore only used to adjust the incidence of the wing from 0 [deg.] to 45 [deg.].
In FIG. 11, another bearing gait known as "large drop", the
mast and wing always free to move, always place themselves in the axis of the wind as in the downwind.
However, the sailboat having changed course while luffing to get closer to the wind, the angle formed by the hull with the direction of the flow
air has decreased.
Figure 12, the sailboat continued to luff, still under the action of the rudder, and then arrives at the crosswind or "drop".
The retainer 14 hitherto released is then tensioned at a certain angle determined by the crew according to the characteristics of the sailboat.
The mast which hitherto was automatically placed in the axis of the
wind is now retained via the starboard shroud
and now presents its flank straight to the wind.
The airfoil which on the other hand remained free therefore pivots around
mast under the action of the wind vane which keeps it facing the wind.
In doing so, the sail plan therefore takes the inclination that the frame of the mechanical device controls and its axis A A 'comes
now be placed substantially parallel to the tilt axis
of the mechanical device.
The sail being fixed by its fasteners parallel to this frame
mobile mechanical device, the simple angular movement of the
mast, by modifying the angle A A '- tilting axis by pivoting
free of the frame, will thus regulate the incidence.
This angular adjustment of the mast is effected by the retainer 14 controlled from the cockpit.
In figure 13, the sailboat continued to luff and is found at
present "closer" to the wind. The wing has kept practically
the same angle and the same position relative to the mast.
However, the retainer 14 had to be released completely in order to
to open the mast-hull angle so that the sail retains a correct incidence relative to the wind.
It should be noted that with this rigging, it is much easier,
during accelerations, to shock the restraint to follow the rapid change in the apparent wind, than to limit the listening as on
classic sailboats.
Figure 14 shows the precise moment of the tack. The crew continued to luff, but the mast being at the end of its angular travel, the airfoil was in negative incidence
and then erased to be placed parallel to the air flow
in incidence 0 (see Figure 8).
The boat having reached the wind, the reservoir was bordered
maximum by the crew in order to bring the mast back into the center of the boat. The axis A A 'is then again perpendicular
to the tilt axis. At this point, the sailboat continuing to luff
on his wander, he finds himself at some point on the other edge
and therefore "port tack".
As soon as the sailboat has started to pivot on the other side, the restraint is then greatly shocked by the crew. The wind mast + wing assembly continues its course and finds itself automatically
at about 70 [deg.] from the center line of the boat, upwind on the other side, as shown in Figure 15. The sail resumed the desired angle and angle.
If at this stage the sailboat continues its downward movement, the crew must gradually resume the restraint and the sailboat will find, but port tack this time, and therefore inverted, all the positions described in Figures 11 - 12 - 14 as well as all possible intermediate positions.
By continuing to shoot down and finally find the tailwind, position in Figure 10, the boat will have thus described a trajectory comprising all the possible gaits of the sailboat. During all
these maneuvers, except during the tack, the crew kept the possibility of adjusting the incidence of the sail plan
for propulsion, and the tilt of it for balance
Of the boat.
Load-bearing; these two settings are confused by the
simple movement of the tilt axis. At the so-called "finesse" paces (drop, close), the incidence of the airfoil is adjusted by
the angular movement of the mast and the orientation of the upward thrust by the movement of the tilt axis. One and
the other of these controls can be combined with the steering control of the boat by a lever type "joystick" or
any other appropriate system.
- By its ease of adjustment, its ability to accept large sail areas and lighten the boat by orienting the upward thrust, this rigging would be particularly suitable for
light sports and speed gear.
