Description

Certain sailing sails, of a sporting nature, such as for example windsurfers, have a mast high enough to support a large area sail. This results in difficulties in terms of stability, so that large races, in rough seas, can only be performed by very experienced pilots. In addition, the effort required to put the mast and the sail in place at the start is relatively large.

Moreover, on these machines, which have a rotating mast, controlled by a whiskey, it is difficult to add to the wing a jib arranged in the usual manner.

The invention brings important improvements to the points of view which have just been exposed and can be applied to all types of gear using a wing for their propulsion such as windsurfing boards, land yachts, all sailboats (monohulls, multihulls, etc.).

A first improvement, constituting the characteristic of the invention, according to claim 1 consists in giving the mast a curvature turned towards the front of the boat, the main sail or main sail being disposed on the mast on the side thereof or reigns the convexity of the curvature.

Thanks to this improvement, it becomes possible to add a jib whose side, generally called "luff " , has its tack, no longer attached independently as is usually done, but fixed to the bottom of the mast, while the he upper end of the luff is also fixed to the mast in its upper part, the free top of the jib opposite the luff, receiving a sheet which allows to adjust the deployment of the jib towards the main sail. This is the second of the improvements which the subject of the invention.

In this arrangement, the wind passage corridor, between the jib and the mainsail, opens between the luff of the jib and the mast, due to the curvature of the latter. The sheet can be fixed in an adjustable way to the main sail holding system, so that the whole mainsail and the jib follow the rotation of the mast without having to modify the setting of the jib, at the less for small rotations.

This combination allows, as we understand, to provide the pilot with a double wing, controlled in the rotation of the mast. Consequently, it is possible to significantly reduce the height of the mast, and consequently to lower the point of application of the wind thrust or point of sail and this, for an equal or greater sail area. This results in a significant improvement in stability and a significant reduction in the effort required to set up the mast at the start or after a fall and to maintain the mast during navigation. In addition, the addition of the jib, which is opposite to the main sail relative to the mast, has the effect of bringing the velic point closer to the axis of rotation of the mast, therefore reducing the effort required to rotate the mast. .

Other improvements will emerge from the description which follows, with reference to the drawings given by way of example.
  • Figure 1 shows schematically, in elevation, a small sailboat equipped with a mast according to the invention.
  • Figure 2 similarly shows a windsurfing board.
  • Figure 3 is an end view of the windsurf board and shows the sail turned 90 ° to take the wind in stern.
  • Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 but shows a rigging comprising a jib.
  • FIG. 5 illustrates a particular arrangement of the jib for the rigging of windsurfing boards or the like.
  • Figure 6 is a section of Figure 5 along line VI-VI.

In Figure 1, we see a small sailboat, like dinghy for example, whose mast 1, instead of being straight, or slightly curved towards the stern as usual, has on the contrary a curvature directed towards the bow. In the figure, the curvature of circular shape extends over an angle of approximately 30 °. This angle can vary, more or less, depending on the machine equipped and the results sought. The curvature can have its origin at the root of the mast. The mast is provided with a sail 2, attached by the usual means, to the rear of the mast, that is to say on the side thereof where the convex part of the curvature prevails. At its base, the sail is similarly attached as usual on a boom 3.

As shown by the dotted lines 1 b representing a straight classic mast of the same height as the curved mast, the sail area, obtained with the curved mast, is increased. It follows that for the same sail area, it is possible to reduce the height of the mast, which is favorable to stability.

The sail is preferably provided with slats 4 to give it a certain stiffness and maintain as much as possible its falling edge 2a on a contour similar to that of the mast.

To allow the sail to hold in the risers, it will advantageously be arranged so that part of its surface in the vicinity of its falling edge can spill under the action of a strong wind pressure. For this, the upper batten 4a of flexible material will be fixed to the mast at its end 4b, while the other slats are free relative to the mast, being only linked to the sail. While being flexible, the upper batten 4a will have a cross section sufficient to withstand a wind of normal force and to not bend, thus allowing a discharge of the sail, only in the event of strong risings.

Figures 2 and 3 show the curved mast applied to a windsurfing board.

As we know, in this kind of machine, the mast is mounted on a ball joint, so that it can turn on itself and take all kinds of inclinations, the control of rotation and tilting being done by a whiskey 5 held by the pilot.

It has been found that, on these machines, the new mast has various advantages which are added to the possibility of reducing the height of the mast and consequently improving stability while reducing the effort to deploy to put the mast back in place. after a fall.

The configuration of the mast and the sail associated therewith gives rise to a mast nose 6 and a sail nose 7.

This configuration allows better penetration in the wind and accentuates the suction effect when going up close.

In Figure 3, we also see that, in reverse wind, the inclination of the mast is less important than with a straight mast if one. seeks to place the vélique point 2b vertical to the root of the mast, where a significant improvement in the maneuverability of the craft.

We can associate with the mast a jib 8 mounted in the usual way, as shown in Figure 4. This jib could also be doubled by another jib.

However, the invention makes it possible to take advantage of the curvature of the mast to mount the jib in a particular way which reinforces the advantages already exposed and makes it possible to obtain others.

The luff 9 of the jib 8 is fixed to the mast at its upper end 10 and at its lower end 11, while at the top 12 of the jib (listening point) opposite the luff is attached a sheet 13 which can be fixed in an adjustable manner on the whiskey, for example by means of a cleat.

It can be seen that in such an arrangement, the jib 8 can be deployed opposite the mainsail 2 (FIG. 5) by forming a channel 14 (FIG. 6) which opens in the interval 17 between the curved mast and the luff 9 of the jib. This channel, delimited by the main sail and the jib, regularly deflects a large air stream by gluing the air streams, which provides good value for the propulsive thrust.

The mainsail and the jib form a set, the orientation of which can be easily adjusted by acting on the whiskey which is fixed to the mast, while for each orientation of the mainsail, the relative orientation of the jib can be modified by acting listening 13.

L'écoute sera alors rattachée à un second taquetDuring the tack, it is enough for the pilot to release the sheet 13 of the cleat which tightens it on the whiskey so that by the action of the wind, the jib turns on the other side by the channel 17 figure 6. The sheet will then be attached to a second cleat

As can be understood from the preceding description, the invention makes it possible to solve the problem of setting up a jib in a rotary mast rigging, such as that of a windsurfing board.

The jib which constitutes an additional wing makes it possible to further reduce the height of the mast for an equal or even slightly larger total sail area, therefore to increase stability.

In addition, as the jib is opposite the main sail 2 with respect to the mast, the vélique point is brought closer to the axis of rotation of the mast, which reduces the torque to be exerted by the pilot to maintain the whole rigging or to change the orientation.

The jib can take a different shape from the usual triangular shape. For example, it could have in its part 15 opposite the luff a rounded shape maintained by a stiffened edge so as to increase the surface of the jib and the covering of the mainsail, thereby promoting the effect of gluing of the air nets .

Le mât courbe peut être fabriqué en tous matériaux convenables : bois légers, aluminium, aggloméré de fibres de carbone et de résine etc...The curved mast can be made of any suitable material: light wood, aluminum, agglomerate of carbon fibers and resin, etc.

The amplitude of the curvature of the mast will depend on the materials used and the area desired for the wing.

On the other hand, it would not go beyond the scope of the invention if instead of a continuous curvature, the mast was given a shape in a broken line or by any other addition making it possible to obtain the advance from the top of the mast towards the bow.

It is in this sense that the expression "is curved in the claim" must be interpreted.
