<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The i. ivention concerningc improvements in the coupling devices of tubes and in particular coupling devices called swivels which aim to allow a relative rotation (pivoting) between the dj sposi tive coupling and a quiet element connected to it this while maintaining a fluid tight seal between them.
There are generally known + pivoting coupling devices which usually comprise a male element rotatably retained and sealed inside a female element, the latter generally being an integral part of a tubular body d coupling to which one or more tubes can be connected. The male element usually has a thread for establishing a connection with a live element which or from which fluid is to be conveyed via the coupling device, for example a fluid flow valve or a supply line. fixed fluid flow, but other types of connection are possible.
In a known swivel coupling device, the male element comprises a tubular part forming a pin received inside the female element, an elastomeric sealing element in the form of an O-ring or the like being placed between the outer surface of the spindle portion and the inner surface of the female element.
The female element has at its outer end a radially inwardly directed lip which extends in a circumferential groove formed in the external surface of the dark spindle part of the male element, which allows the male element to be retained. the interior while making possible its relave rotation. The female and male elements are made in rr. ctal, for example brass or zinc alloy. This arrangement has two drawbacks.
First of all, after a certain period of use, the lip tends to wear out and this can ultimately cause the male element to be released from the female element.
Alternatively, a friction @ @ re followed by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
seizure could occur, which would prevent pivoting.
Second, the female element must be specially formed to accept and retain the male element.
It would be advantageous if wholesalers and users could easily adapt certain standard tube couplings to swivel couplers. One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a swivel coupling which can be produced with this adaptation and which alleviates the problem of wear and seizure mentioned above.
According to the present invention, there is provided a device for coupling tubes of the pivoting type comprising a member forming a hollow body having a female terninal part, a male member pierced lengthwise comprising an externally cylindrical part forming a pin received in a manner watertight inside the female part, and terminating in a connection part outside the female part, as well as retaining means making it possible to hold the male element in the female element in such a way that an axial relative movement between them is substantially prevented but that a relative rotation between the male element and the hollow body element is possible around the longitudinal axis of the male element,
the coupling device being characterized in that the retaining device comprises a plastic sleeve, held substantially against an axial movement, inside the female part of the body element, the sleeve comprising a circular cylindrical bore which passes through it, with locking elements forming an integral part of plastic material extending towards the axis of the bore, and in that the part forming a pin of the male element is received at inside the bore of the sleeve and has inside a circumferential cavity in which the blocking means extends so as to normally prevent the withdrawal of the male element out of the cavity forming a hollow body.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The coupling device can have any desired shape such as a rectilinear, elbow or T shape and the body will all have the appropriate corresponding configuration. Usually, in the case of a straight coupling, for example, the female part constitutes one of the extreme parts of the body intended for a pivoting junction, via the male element, to any other ment, and the opposite end of the body cor. tpcrte of n) means to allow connection to a tube.
This connection can be of any type, as desired, for example a compression connection or a connection called "push". However, according to the present invention, provision is also made for having a coupling device comprising one or more pivoting connections. The body can be made from a suitable metal such as brass, or a suitable plastic and can, for example, be part of an apparatus such as the body of a valve where the socket and the element are retained. , instead of constituting the body of a separate tube-to-tube coupling device.
The bushing can be fixed stationarily in a female part of the head body as desired.
However, when preferably a swivel coupling device of the present invention has been mounted using inter alia a conventional non-swivel body, the method of retaining the socket will be dictated to a great extent by the nature of the internal shape of this body.
For example, in the case of a rectilinear coupling body, which would normally be used in conjunction with appropriate collars and O-rings, to connect two tubes by a push-in connection or to embed nt, the socket is provided in an appropriate nano to be retained in the body in a manner similar to the collar. Such an embodiment is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings. On the other hand, when for example the body is internally threaded and would normally be used to connect tubes by means of a mounting by

compressjon, t nuc

by contacting by screwing.
It is therefore seen that the same body can be used either in a conventional non-swivel coupling device. either, in choice. : "drilling a socket and a suitable male element in a pivoting coupling device according to the present invention.
This has obvious advantages for wholesalers and users, since the same body can be easily adapted to various configurations.
The socket is in the form of a one-piece plastic molding element, preferably an acetal polymer. In preferred embodiments, the sleeve is stationary fixed inside the female part of the body against axial and rotary movements relative to the body, the cylindrical wall of the bore passing through the sleeve providing a non-lubricated door surface supporting

forming a body.
In either case, during the pivoting of the coupling device, the wear will be very low and in addition there is little likelihood that there is a seizure between the parts rotating relatively relative to one another. to the other.
The junction part of the male element, outside the female part can provide any type of connection. Usually, however, it will include a thread-ie external screwing and in this case part of the male element outside the female part preferably has a number of flat faces

Other features and advantages of the present invention will result from the detailed description which follows of an embodiment of the present invention, which is given by way of non-limiting example and in reference drawings, on which:

Referring to Figure 1, the coupling device comprises a hollow brass body 1 in the form of a 90 ° elbow and includes two identical female parts 2 and 3 perforated and hollowed out interconnected by a bore 4. Parts 2 and 3 internally have, inter alia, conical surfaces 5 and 5 'respectively.
Regarding part 2, it receives a joint in

elastomer 6 toric and a brass tube clamp 7 which respectively serve to form a fluid tight seal with a plastic tube 8 and to retain it inside Body 1. The tube, 8 is connected to a device coupling simply by embolization in the device until reaching the stop 9 of tube formed in the body 1. The operation of such fittings by embolternent is known to those skilled in the art of tube coupling and is described by exen. ple in British Patent No. 1,270,648. In short, the collar 7 comprises several flexible arms 10 each of which is provided with a tooth 11 which lightly grips the tube 8.
If an attempt is made to remove the tube without first pressing on the collar 7, the latter moves axially outward with the tube and acts in cooperation with the conical surface 5 by making it clamp on the tube, this which prevents it from coming out. However, if one pushes axially internally on the collar 7 ′ while removing the tube 8, the latter can be easily removed from the coupling.
If we consider part 3, it also receives an elastomer O-ring 6'mdis instead of the collar 7 for clamping the tube, it retains stationarily a plastic bush 12 molded from

external 14 having a cylindrical internal surface 15 from which extend axially "example four) flexible 16 spaced apart. As in the case of cullet 7, the arms 16 of the socket 12 are sufficiently spaced so that the socket 12 can be located in the part 3 simply by pushing it there by hand, so that the arms 16 contract firstly radially and then pass along the converging conical surface 17 formed in part 3 and then expand radially, continuing the introduction of the sleeve, at n.osure they pass along the divergent conical part S '.
The final assembled position of the sleeve 12 is shown in FIG. 1. The sleeve 12 has a flexible flange 18 forming an integral part and extending radially outwardly, which abuts against a shoulder 19 formed in the female part 3 and which serves to absorb everything scrapped. The innermost end of each flexible arm 16 comprises two parts, namely a radially external part 20 which comes into contact with the conical surface 5 ′ and a radially internal part 21 from or generally protruding internally towards the axis of the socket 12 a lip 6 locking tick 22 having a flat end face 22 '.
The brass elHent m le 13 with axial hole comprises a spindle part 23, a central part 24 having a larger diameter than the spindle forming part 23 and externally carrying a number of flat parts 25 for a wrench. and an external screw thread portion 26. The spindle portion 23 has inside a circumferential channel 27 of rectangular section which provides an annular abutment surface 28 extending normally to the axis of the element 13.
T ment 13 is assembled from the coupling simply by fitting it into the socket 12 so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
that the anterior end of the spindle portion 23 passes through the O-ring 6 ′ and comes into sealing contact therewith, and that each lip 22 finally engages in the channel 27, the end face
EMI7.1
mite the lip abutting against the surface 28 = e which makes it possible to permanently retain the male element 13 in the coupling.
The internal surface 15 of the part 14 of the bushing and, to a certain extent, the internal surface of each arm 16 provide a non-lubricated bearing surface intended for the spindle part 23 of the male element 13 such that the body 1 of the coupling device can easily rotate relative thereto. In FIG. 1, the male element 13 is shown as being screwed into the threaded orifice of a valve body 29.
As the male brass element 13 is essentially located only and rotatably supported by the plastic sleeve 12, the wear of the components with relative rotation is minimal. Although, as shown in FIG. 1, there is a metal-to-metal rotational contact, between the internal end of the rock portion 23 and the body 1, the wear which appears here has little effect and any case will be minimal since the contacting surfaces will be lubricated by fluid passing through the coupling during its use.
In addition, it should be noted that the body 1 can either be used in the manner shown in FIG. or alternately provide part 3 with a collar such as 7 to produce a bent coupling to allow the connection of two tubes by embedding. Anyway, the collar or the socket and the male element can, as is the case, be easily assembled in the body 1 without the use of tools by the wholesaler or the user.
