"Polar terminal passage for accumulators and method for preparing such a passage" "Polar terminal passage for accumulators and method for preparing such a passage"
The present invention relates to a device intended to close, in a sealed manner vis-à-vis the electrolyte, the passage of a metal pole terminal through the cover of an accumulator element, this device comprising a socket which is placed coaxially on the pole terminal, is sealed against the metal pole terminal and is then sealed against the cover of the accumulator element.
As is known, the pole terminals must, as current conducting elements, be passed outside the accumulator elements through the cover thereof, and this in a sealed manner vis-à-vis the electrolyte, so that the highly surfactant sulfuric acid does not reach the outside, for example in the case of a lead-acid battery. As a result of the surface-active properties of sulfuric acid, the latter can slip through very fine cracks and fissures and thus moisten the surface of the accumulator element with an acid film, which alters the insulation value.
The particular problems of polar terminal crossings are essentially of three kinds. On the one hand, different materials arise, that is to say that the metal pole terminal, generally a lead terminal, can only be very difficult to be sealed directly against the substance of the synthetic material of the cover of the element. accumulator. Consequently, the known pole terminal passages use a sleeve of synthetic substance which is placed coaxially on the terminal and is sealed against the pole terminal and which can then again be sealed more easily against screw of substance
synthetic cover of the accumulator element.
Another problem lies in the fact that, during the period of use of an accumulator element, it is necessary to take account of an increase, in particular of the positive plates, in the direction of the cover, so that the passage pole terminal with its sealing elements can sometimes be subjected to significant forces which cause leaks in the case of unsuitable passages.
Another problem is that, in the known polar terminal passages, only small manufacturing and mounting tolerances are allowed and that, in total, great care in manufacturing must be required so that all the elements forming part of the waterproof polar terminal passage
to the electrolyte, in particular the relatively soft lead terminals, are still in a perfect state, when, at the end of the manufacture of an accumulator, the cover must be placed and closed in a sealed manner to the electrolyte.
A pole terminal passage of the type described
in the preamble is for example described in the patent application in the German Federal Republic OS 29 18 036. The socket placed coaxially on the pole terminal is, like a cable gland, sealed by means of a ring O-ring arranged radially against the surface of the metal pole terminal which is demolded in a slightly conical shape. This requires in each case a perfect surface
and compliance with the prescribed dimensions of the metal pole terminal. The sleeve itself has, as an outer envelope surface, a smooth surface on which the sealing member of a second gland which is arranged on the cover of the accumulator element is movably supported. This type of polar terminal passage certainly allows an axial adjustment of the metal terminal, but the electrolyte-tight closure
is not sufficiently guaranteed in particular between the socket and the metal pole terminal. Even slight damage or oxidation of the metal pole terminal surface before fitting the socket can lead to leaks. The forces transmitted on the pole terminal in the closing device, during
the growth of the plates, can slightly move the O-ring seal between the bushing and
the pole terminal in areas where perfect sealing no longer exists.
The object of the present invention is to propose a passage of polar terminal sealed to the electrolyte in a durable manner, which does not additionally require manufacturing precision as well as the manufacturing and mounting tolerances hitherto necessary.
This problem is solved according to the invention
by the fact that the polar terminal is made with
a suitable sealing surface, which projects radially and surrounds the pole terminal, that the socket is in abutment against the sealing surface of the terminal by a sealing surface on its front side and that the socket is tightened in direction axial against the sealing surface of the metal pole terminal.
A particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the sealing surface of the metal pole terminal and / or of
the sleeve is shaped with a peripheral annular bead. While the known polar terminal passages are produced between the sleeve and the metal polar terminal in the form of a sealing member with radial action, with the effect that the precise seat of the annular sealing member is not not precisely defined on the surface normally shaped in a conical shape of the metal polar terminal and that correspondingly the entire surface of the metal polar terminal which is concerned with sealing must be manufactured carefully and so perfect, the solution according to the invention is continued in another way and a clean and defined sealing surface is produced, integrated into the metal pole terminal, this sealing surface having to be stressed in the axial direction.
This can for example be carried out by a shoulder from the foundry or by a collar or the like shaped in turn on the terminal. In each case, the sleeve fitted coaxially
on the pole terminal is clamped with its sealing surface on the front side always against the same defined sealing surface of the pole terminal, the sealing action being made optimum by the aforementioned peripheral annular bead on the surface (s) sealing. According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, a sealing member made of rubber material is arranged between the sealing surfaces.
After fixing the socket on the pole terminal, a seal is obtained between the socket and the metal pole terminal against the electrolyte which is not subsequently subjected to modifications and / or damage. , when significant axial forces act through the metal pole terminal on the closing elements of the passage of the pole terminal. In no case can a modification of the position of the sealing member between the socket and the metal pole terminal be possible.
To reduce the important care provided
the manufacturing, hitherto necessary, and the manufacturing tolerances of the metal pole terminal, a method according to the invention is proposed for preparing a pole terminal passage sealed to the electrolyte, which is characterized by the fact that, directly after the preparation of the metal pole terminal and possibly after the finishing of the sealing surface formed on the metal terminal,
the socket is placed on the metal pole terminal
and it is pressed against the sealing surface, in
the axial direction, and by the fact that it is only at the
As a result, the set of plates having the sealing surface protected by the socket of the metal pole terminal is brought to the subsequent manufacturing stage.
This preparation process according to the invention starts from the knowledge that it is relatively simple from the point of view of the manufacturing technique.
to prepare a metal polar terminal according to the invention having an integrated sealing surface. Since, according to the operations hitherto common of the processes, the passage of the pole terminal is closed only after the insulating placement of the cover of the accumulator element, it is a question of protecting the sealing surface still perfect of the relatively soft metal pole terminal, directly after finishing. This is done by the fact that, directly after the final layout, the sealing surface
of the polar terminal is protected by the material more
hard of the sleeve, usually of a synthetic substance sleeve, so that the sensitive sealing surface can neither be damaged nor be
oxidized during the following stages of manufacture.
The axial clamping of the socket on the metal pole terminal can be carried out in different ways, such as by a coupling nut screwed on a thread on the side of the pole terminal head or by a safety ring introduced
in a pole terminal groove.
In an even simpler way from the point of view of the manufacturing technique, the sleeve can, according to another embodiment of the invention, be clamped against the sealing surface of
the metal polar terminal by the fact that
elastic stop means are arranged on the socket and engage in corresponding notches of the metal pole terminal. The manufacture of such a socket provided with elastic stop means
is advantageous in the form of a piece of synthetic substance injection molded and the fitting of the sleeve, including engagement and respectively its axial clamping, is particularly simple from the point of view of the manufacturing technique.
The pole terminal passage is then sealed in a manner known per se.
The sealing materials can be made from bitumen, casting resin or fusible glue. As sealing masses, they put, in any case, in types of battery having an increase in the plates, an axial adjustment movement of the pole terminals. If you can't count on an increase in plaques,
it is also possible to perform a hard sealing, the sleeve advantageously being made of the same material, weldable by the sealing mass, as the cover of the accumulator element.
Other details and particularities of the present invention will emerge from the description given below, without implied limitation and with reference to the attached drawings.
Figure 1A shows a longitudinal sectional view through a pole terminal passage according to the invention which has a snap. FIG. 1B represents a view in longitudinal section through a pole terminal passage according to the invention which has a safety ring. FIG. 2 shows another embodiment of the polar terminal passage according to the invention.
Figures 3 and 4 show a third embodiment with demonstration of the possible tolerances in length of the pole terminal.
FIG. 1A shows a lead polar terminal 5 according to the invention having a shaped sealing surface 6 which projects radially and surrounds the polar terminal and is, in the illustrated embodiment, shaped around together with the notches 7 of the polar terminal.
Directly after the sealing surface 6 has been finished, the synthetic substance socket 8 is placed on the pole terminal with the addition of the sealing member 9, the elastic stop elements 10 formed on the socket engaging in the corresponding notches 7 and clamping the sleeve in the axial direction against the sealing surface 6 of the pole terminal.
The pole terminal thus sufficiently protected achieves, in the subsequent stage of manufacture, the placement of the cover 11 of the accumulator element which forms with its annular projection
12 the pocket 13 for the sealing material of the passage of the pole terminal. At the bottom of the pocket 13 is inserted a sealing ring 23 which is in abutment
on the sleeve 8 and which prevents a passage of the sealing material. The sealed terminal electrolyte passage is finished after sealing
of the passage.
FIG. 1B corresponds substantially to FIG. 1A, but in this exemplary embodiment, for the axial fixing of the sleeve 8, instead of the stop elements 10 and the notches 7, a safety ring 24 is used which is introduced into a corresponding groove in the metal pole terminal. Figure 2 shows another embodiment of the invention in which a collar 14 is shaped on the pole terminal. A sealing O-ring 15 is placed against the sealing surface of this collar 14 and, as a result, the sleeve 16 is placed and tightened axially by means of the ring nut 17. The sealing is then carried out the passage of the terminal, as described above.
Figures 3 and 4 show an embodiment of the invention in which the sealing surface of the shoulder 18 of the pole terminal is provided in addition with an annular bead 19 peripheral. After the sealing member 20 has been placed, the sleeve 21 is again fitted and its axial tightening by means of the coupling nut 22. Here again, the sealing is again chosen as sealing. between the sleeve and the cover of the accumulator element, but other seals are also possible between the sleeve and the cover of the accumulator element, such as for example a known gland seal member, or the like.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate by mutual comparison that manufacturing and mounting tolerances for a metal pole terminal according to the invention with integrated sealing surface do not exist. In an extreme case, the length tolerances of the metal pole terminal are admissible, as is shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 by their comparison. This greatly simplifies the manufacture of the accumulator elements, because during the final placement of the cover of the accumulator element, any excessive or insufficient lengths of the metal pole terminal do not have a negative effect on the tight closure to the electrolyte from the pole terminal.
It should be understood that the present invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described above and that many modifications can be made thereto without departing from the scope of this patent.
