"Farrowing cage for sows".
unfortunate repercussions for its hind legs and consequently on the longevity of the animal. It also makes cleaning the cage very difficult. On the other hand, the danger of crushing piglets between the sow and the cage is very great.
To remedy these drawbacks, it appeared advantageous according to the invention to create an arrangement of pigsty lodges of simple construction and having various advantages.
The arrangement of pigsty pens according to the invention is characterized in that it consists in mounting a farrowing pen for sows in a mobile manner.
According to the invention, the arrangement consists in suspending the cage from a wall of the compartment and in making it mobile with respect to this wall.
A farrowing cage intended to achieve the arrangement described is constituted by a substantially rectangular enclosure or frame provided with means allowing it to be fixed in a movable manner to a wall of the compartment.
In order to better understand the invention, it is now described in more detail on the basis of the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, showing by:
Figure 1 a plan view of a lodge arrangement according to the invention; Figure 2 a side elevational view of the farrowing crate mounted in the pen, and Fig. 3 a rear elevational view of said crate.
There is shown in Figure 1 a pigsty lodge 1 of current dimensions. In this box is mounted a farrowing cage 2, formed by a frame comprising two bar frames 3 arranged vertically and parallel at a distance from each other and connected together in an articulated manner at their upper part by crossbars. 4. The frame or cage 2 is pivotally mounted on the wall 1 'of the box by means of hinges and hinges. In the vertical element 5 of each frame 3 is provided at the top and at the base a pin forming a hinge 6 intended to engage in a nozzle forming a hinge 7 fixed to spaced uprights 8 provided in the wall 1 'of the compartment.
Each frame 3 can therefore pivot around its upright 8, inside the compartment, but as said frames are interconnected by cross members 4 in an articulated manner, they remain mutually parallel during their pivoting.
(see in Figure 1 the positions 3 'and 3 "of the frames in dotted lines and in Figure 3 the positions 2', 2" of the cages).
The wall 1 ′ of the box between the two uprights 8 is open and this opening 9 gives access to a trough 10 outside the box and surmounted by an inclined grid 11 fixed to said uprights.
At the rear, that is to say opposite the pivots, the cage is closed by bars 12 pivoting at one end on one of the frames 3 and being able to be fixed by the other end to the other frame 3, so as to allow the introduction of the animal into the cage.
The lower hinges 7 are arranged on the uprights 8 such that the cage does not rest on the ground but is suspended in the box at a certain height from the ground allowing the free movement of the piglets, as can be seen in figures 2 and 3.
Towards their lower part, the frames 3 carry the longitudinal members 13 inside the cage. These longitudinal members
consist of tubes mounted in rings 14 and capable of rotating about their axis. These mobile tubes 13 therefore protrude into the cage and reduce the width thereof (Figure 3).
The cabin arrangement according to the invention is
very advantageous because it allows greater mobility for the animal, which can move around in the box by moving the cage with it. Which has a positive influence on its hind legs.
By rotating the cage, the animal is moved with it and therefore the housing can be easily cleaned to remove manure mixed with straw. This allows the sow's teats to always stay clean, which has a great influence on little suckling pigs, whose
mortality is therefore greatly reduced.
As the cage has no feet but remains suspended, the sow when lying down will no longer crush the piglets because they can retreat into the pen outside
the cage. Thanks to the movable side tubes, which reduce the width of the cage, as mentioned above, the sow is forced to lie down slowly by leaning on these tubes and can no longer lie down suddenly on the ground, thanks
to which the piglets will have time to withdraw from the sow's underside.
The farrowing crate is movably mounted in the compartment, that is to say it can move inside it, but it is also mounted easily removable. It suffices, after having detached it from the uprights 8, to remove it in one piece, when the suckling pigs have grown.
The cost of manufacturing such a cage is far lower than that of manufacturing traditional cages, because there is less material and the construction is relatively simple.
There is shown in the drawings and described above a farrowing cage in the form of a deformable parallelogram, capable of pivoting relative to a wall of the compartment, but of course one would not depart from the scope of the invention by making the arrangement according to the invention with a farrowing cage shaped differently.
