Abstract

The steel contains in %: 2.5-3.5 Si, 0.01-0.05 Al, 0.06 max. C, and is treated to form a phase with high hardness amounting to 5-30 vol. %, the cycle being (a) hot-rolled at 1370-1430 degrees C.; (b) anneal, 10-60 secs. at 1050-1170, pref. 1120-1170 degrees C.; (c) cool slowly to 700-900, pref. 750-850 degrees C.; (d) quench rapidly in water; (e) cold-roll with redn. ratio 80-90%; (f) anneal for recrystallisation and decaburisation in damp H2 for 2 mins. at 780-870 degrees C.; (g) final anneal in N2+H2 at 1200 degrees C. Stage (d) gives high values of magnetic induction; this is not solely due to AlN but is due to the dispersion of a hard phase, formed on quenching, in the ferritic matrix.
