Abstract

A catalyst system for the polymsn. of alpha-olefins comprises an org. cpd. of a Gp Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIb, or IVb metal and a solid complex prepd. by reacting a gp. IVa, Va, or VIa metal cpd. with a porous Al2O3 on which a Mg cpd. contg. O2 and/or a halogen has been deposited. The polymer formed has low melt index and a broad m. wt. distribution in the high m. wt. range. A smaller amt. of m. wt. regulator is used compared to prior art which results in reduced hydrogenation of the olefin when the regulator is H2. The transition metal content in the complex is also low resulting in negligible residual catalyst in the product and eliminating a purification step.
