Abstract

Melting of scrap iron and other metallic scrap is effected by melting the scrap by a conventional method, i.e. in line with a casting ladle and a rotating furnace equipped with two or more plasma torches, where the molten metal is required. The opening of the rotating furnace communicates with a continuous casting installation. The rotating furnace is cooled and equipped with lock chambers at its ends so that it can operate under a controlled atmosphere. The rotating furnace has electromagnetic devices to rotate the liquid mass. Scrap iron can be refined continuously to a homogeneous molten bath with relatively low energy consumption.
