Prepn. of alpha-pheylethyl alcohol (I), used in the perfume industry and as a starting material for styrene, by liq. phase oxidn. f ethylbenzene by molecular O2 at 100 - 300 degrees C, (pref. 160 - 200 degrees C) under an effective press. of 1-100 (pref. 15-25) atmos. in the presence of a carboxylic acid anhydride, (pref. acetic anhydride), in a molar ratio to the ethylbenzene of 1:1-12; the ester obtd. from (I) and the carboxylic acid is then saponified.
