Abstract

Symmetrical diarylketone carboxylic acids are reacted with excess methanol to give the corresponding methyl esters; the latter may be hydrolysed to give carboxylic acids of higher purity than the initial materials. The preparation of di (4-carbomethoxyphenyl) ketone (made by HNO3 oxidation of 1,1-di[4-tolyl] ethane) and its hydrolysis to the parent acid are exemplified. The process is stated to be also applicable specifically to compounds Ar2CO, where Ar is 2-carboethoxy-4-carboxyphenyl, 3-methyl - 4 - carboxy - 6 - chloro - 1 - naphthyl, 2,6 - dipropyl - 9 - carboxy - 10 - anthryl, 2-carboxy - 4 - cyclohexyl - 5 - isooctyl - 6 - aminophenyl, 5 - carboxy - 7 - hexadecyl - 8 - phenanthryl, 1,4 - dihydro - 7 - hydroxy - 8 - carboxy - 5 - naphthyl or 6 - nitro - 7 - carboxy - 4-indolyl.
