Abstract
P-xylene is produced by (i) disproportionation of aromatic hydrocarbons contg. toluene at less than 371 degrees C in the presence of an aluminosilicate catalyst, (ii) separating effluent into fraction contg. xylenes from which p-xylene is isolated (iii) isomerising remaining xylenes to p-xylene at 177-343 degrees C in the presence of a crystalline alumino silicate catalyst (iv) fractionating effluent into a toluene-contg. fraction (recycled to zone (i)) and a xylene-contg. fractione (recycled to zone (ii)).
