1,174,039. Vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons. IDEMITSU PETROCHEMICAL CO. Ltd. and IDEMITSU KOSAN CO. Ltd. 30 July, 1968 [3 Aug., 1967], No. 36337/68. Heading C5E. A process for the production of a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon comprises catalytically dehydrogenating an alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of steam using a plurality of reaction zones connected in series, fresh alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon and steam being added to the reaction mixture issuing from each zone, except the last, prior to passing the mixture into the next reaction zone. Preferably 2 to 4 reaction zones are used. Examples describe the preparation of styrene from ethylbenzene.
