<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Dix couches de huit balles, o'est-à-dire quatre vingts ballos au total, sont empilées sur le support et quand l'empilage est achevé, celui-ci est amené par pivotement dans sa position de transport par le recul du pis- ton 25 du mécanisme hydraulique;
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Device for handling loads."
This invention relates to apparatus for handling loads, of the type comprising a trailer and a support mounted thereon; While the invention is generally applicable to a very wide variety of loads, such as crates and other generally regular shaped articles, it is particularly applicable to the transport of bales of hay and the like, from a field where bale formation has taken place, fts to a storage location such as a barn.,
An object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus of improved construction for handling loads.
A more specific object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus intended for handling loads, with a view to transporting bales of hay or similar materials, the construction of which is such that the transport speed of these bales is much greater. than before.
According to the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for handling loads, of the type comprising a trailer and a support mounted thereon, - this apparatus is characterized by
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
terise in that the support is connected to the trailer so as to pivot on the latter and to be able to be detached therefrom and in that devices are provided for causing the pivoting movement of the support relative to the trailer, between a pre - first loading or unloading position, in which it is in contact with the ground, and a second transport position, in which its weight is entirely carried by the trailer.
The support can, preferably, pivot by 90 relative to the trailer and advantageously has an L-shape, seen in profile and in elevation; the load is supported on the L-arm when the support is in its first position and by the L-leg when the support is in its second position.
Experiments have shown that when the support is in its first loading or unloading position, it can be pushed so that the shorter side of it, i.e. the arm of the L, passes. under a stack of balls formed beforehand, and in the same way, one can remove this shorter side from under a stack of balls, leaving this one posed freely, upright on the ground.
The invention will now be described, by way of reference, with reference to the accompanying drawings, where: - Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trailer constructed in accordance with the present invention.
- Figure 2 is a perspective view of a support to be mounted on the trailer of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail view, in perspective, of the removable swivel coupling between the carrier and the trailer, and - Figure 4 is a perspective view of a trailer and a carrier assembled and placed in position. service for the transport of a load of hay bales.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The handling device shown in the drawings is intended for transporting hay bales from a field where the bales were formed to a barn or similar storage point, The device includes a trailer it .. shown in Figure 1 and one or more supports constructed as shown in Figure 2 and each of which is intended to be mounted on the trailer, so as to be able to pivot thereon and be detached.
The trailer comprises a frame 10 which is generally triangular in plan, with, near the bottom of the triangle, a transverse axis 11 at each end of which is

mounted a wheel bearing on the ground. At the top of the triangle, i.e. at the narrow end of the trailer, the frame is fitted with a suitable coupling, allowing it to be coupled to the drawbar or to the hitch of a tractor. agricultural, for example; the frame a can also be provided, at this end, with a foot or a shoe (not shown) which can make contact with the ground and on which it can rest when the trailer is not in use.
EMI3.2
The support is basically in the form of a. ±, in the sense that it comprises a long side or base with a pair of main bearing members 11, a pair of side members 14 and a number of transverse members; L2 perpendicular to the bearing members atl and to the side elements J.!. t.
The main load-bearing elements They have a reatangular section, in a box, like the elements 12 and z tiu Side or of the base 121 there is also a reinforcing element Z8, in box, near the element of end 12. The support comprises a short side thereof, or end wall 12, consisting of five angles 20, spaced parallel to each other and attached to the end section.

On the inside face of the long side of the supports there is a pair of ears. spaced 6J ,. attached to the elements. Po

main teurs 13, near the reinforcing element 18 and pierced with eyelets to receive retractable pivots 22 carried by the trailer.
Approximately halfway along the long side 12 of the support, there are provided two bars 221 extending between the main carrying bars and between which are located two retaining elements 23, fixed thereto and each of which has an upward facing inlet for receiving a pin 24 attached to the end of the piston 25 of a double acting hydraulic assembly 26, comprising a cylinder and a piston and mounted on the trailer so as to provide a swivel coupling between the piston and support.
The cylinder of the mechanism is pivotally connected to the frame 10, near the narrow end thereof, and the pin 24, which can be received in the open inlets of the retainers 23, pivots on a pair of rods 27 connected by means of pivots, by their lower ends, to support members 28 attached to the frame
10, at the end opposite to that where the cylinder 26 pivots thereon.
The arrangement is such that as the piston 25 moves outwardly of the cylinder 26, the entire mechanism and pair of rods 27 pivot relative to the frame 10 from a position where they are substantially parallel. - Lèles to the latter, up to the position of Figure 1 where the rods 27 are essentially vertical and where the mechanism forms an angle of approximately 300 with the plane of the frame 10.
Three load transmitting members 29, attached to the end 16 of the long side of the carrier are arranged to rest on a cross member 30 provided on the trailer, above the point where the cylinder and piston assembly pivot on the frame. 10 when the support, pivoting on the trailer, moves to a position where the supporting bars 13 are horizontal, so that the trailer fully supports the support, the other end of which then rests on the pivots 22.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The pivots 22 are enclosed in sleeves 31 fixed to vertical ears 32 attached to the frame 10 and arranged parallel to other ears 33; the eyes 32 and 33 are pierced with aligned openings to receive the pivots 22 'subjected to the action of springs so as to pass sleeves 31 through these aligned openings. Reinforcement elements 34 are attached between the ears
32 and 33 and to horizontal elements 35 of the frame 10, to ensure a rigid mounting of the support.
Metal wires 36 are attached to the pivots 22 and arranged to pass over pulleys 38 and extend to a main operating wire 38 attached to an articulated rod 39 provided on the frame 10, near the end of the wire. this one opposite the pivots 22, and connected to a rod 40 to which one can attach another metal wire (not shown), so that the driver of a tractor to which the trailer is hitched then - pull on this wire to make take out the pins 22 from the aligned openings of the ears 32 and 33 and fit them into the sleeves
Two guides 41 are fixed to the inner face of the longer side 12 of the support, with a spacing such as when the trailer is moved back into position to couple it to the support,
which is then arranged as in Figure 2, with its short side 19 resting on the ground, the horizontal elements 35 of the frame are guided so as to engage between the two guides 41, so that the ears 32 and 33 of the frame come to be placed on either side of the ears 21 of the support; at this moment, the pivots 22 are retracted, but when the metal wire is released holding them in this position, they engage in the aligned openings of the ears 32 and 33 and pass through the eyelets of the ears 21 to couple the support. to the trailer.
When the piston 25 of the hydraulic mechanism is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
then elongated, the rods 27 pivot into essentially vertical positions and the pin 24 connecting the piston 25 thereto then passes over the surfaces of the retainers 23 presented forwards and engages them in - very open of these, thus ensuring the connection of the piston 25 with the support. When the piston 25 is retracted into the cylinder of the hydraulic mechanism, the support pivots around the axes of the pivots 22 and reaches a position where the elements 29 come to rest on the transverse element 30.
A pair of vertical members 42, attached to member 30, carry a frame 43 functioning as a stopper to engage the load carried by the support when the members thereof are brought into their horizontal or transport position; stop . formed by the frame 43 in fact serves as another end wall of the support, the first of which is formed by the shorter side 10.
In service, when the support is mounted on the trailer, it is brought into its first loading or unloading position, that is to say with the main axis of its long side 12 extending vertically, so as to power the char-. freeze 'the desired number of balls. In the particular embodiment illustrated in the drawings, the holder is provided to carry ten rows of eight bales which have been previously assembled by eight by means of a bale collector illustrated in the specification of United States Patent No. 3,361. 279 and then picked up eight at a time by a loader as described in the specification of UK Patent No. 1,020,450.
Ten layers of eight bales, i.e. eighty bales in total, are stacked on the carrier, and when stacking is complete, the carrier is pivoted into its transport position by the recoil of the track. tone 25 of the hydraulic mechanism;
as the support approaches its horizontal position, any tendency for balls to fall. which is above it, when the support is in its position
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
loading, is prevented by the stop frame. The final movement of the carrier under the action of the double-acting assembly 26 serves to push the bales forward, towards the frame 43 so as to keep them compressed on the apparatus, so that 'there is no need for a rope to hold it. load on the support,
The complete unit can then be towed to a barn or similar storage location,
then the support is brought from its horizontal transport position to its vertical position and the apparatus can then be removed leaving all the stack of balls which rests freely on the ground. To this end, the short side 19 of the carrier is formed of angles 20 spaced apart from each other, so that when the carrier is in its unloading position, the lower row of bales is in contact with the hearth in the bales. spaces between the angles 20, which facilitates the removal of the support without dragging the balls.
By providing two or more carriers, each constructed as in Figure 2, one can operate leaving one carrier to be loaded in the field, while the previously loaded carrier is transported to the storage point and then brought back to the field.
Experiments have shown that one can forcibly push the support under a previously formed stack of hay bales, using it much like the fork of a forklift, in order to engage it under the load. to carry.
Although the invention has been described in connection with an apparatus for transporting bales of hay and the like, it is naturally applicable to a wide variety of goods.
